Arcana Launches Comics & Pop Culture Magazine

VANCOUVER (November 5, 2009) – Arcana Studios, an award winning comic book publisher and transmedia producer, is proud to announce the launch of Arcana Magazine. Debuting on January 27th 2010, and solicited in the current November Previews (Diamond Code: NOV09 0599) is the new quarterly magazine simply entitled Arcana, the re-designed print version of the on-line comics based magazine Extra Sequential.

Extra Sequential was the brainchild of Kris Bather and Dave Lapsley in Perth, Western Austrailia – two men who were looking for creative opportunities outside of their day jobs at a large architectural design firm. From January to June of this year 3 issues of Extra Sequential were published, containing interviews with an array of creative professionals, such as Joe Jusko, Zeb Wells, Tom DeFalco, and Brian Cronin. Topics covered included Street Fighter, Flash Gordon, the new Hulk and so much more, with an eye on both mainstream and rising indie stars.

After reaching over 16,000 subscribers on Scribd.com and becoming a Featured Magazine on Issuu.com, Extra Sequential was picked up by Arcana Comics for the transition to print, with Bather and Lapsley continuing their unique comics focus in the new print format.

Bather is the former Comics Department Head of now defunct website Infuze and current contributor to popular website Broken Frontier. Lapsley is new to the world of comics but brings a keen sense of design and shares Bather’s desire to let the world know how cool comics truly are.

“The thing that has always seemed odd to me is that comics continually reveal diverse art from some of the world’s greatest artists, but few people outside of the local comic book shop will ever know that,” says Bather. “Sure, a multitude of people are more familiar with Spider-Man and Batman thanks to Hollywood, but that seems to rarely translate to an increase in regular readership of comics. We hope Arcana can be somewhat of a bridge for those readers as well as show something new to longtime lovers of sequential art.”

Inspired more by the surf and skate magazines than the usual pop culture assortment on the shelves, Arcana aims to let the art speak for itself while also making sure every page is an artistic display. With bold layouts incorporating unique design and photography Arcana aims to be more than a throwaway item, but an attractive glimpse into the cutting edge of comic books and the people behind them.

Bather states, “We chose the landscape format straight out of the gate because we want people to know that we’re different upon first glance. We realise it’s perhaps a risky choice, but that’s exactly what comics are too. We want to conjure curiousity in comics newbies, but there’s enough content in Arcana for the veteran reader too.”

The first issue of Arcana features interviews with Star Wars: Invasion writer Tom Taylor, artist Josh Medors, Singaporean writer Edmund Shern, Surrogates creator Robert Venditti, and ground breaking artist David Mack. Also included are previews from upcoming comics and features such as a look back at The Death of Superman event, a talk with pro cyclist/comics fan Dave Zabriskie, a brief chat with the legendary Marv Wolfman, and an article on the current love affair between musicians and comics, including an interview with Coheed & Cambria’s Claudio Sanchez. There’s also a look at just how to market comics today, a breakdown of popular comic book terms and more.

Arcana #1, a 96 page full color magazine goes on sale January 27th, 2010.

Trondheim’s Little Nothings

Lewis Trondheim is one of those indie creators who I’ve been aware of for some time, but have never actually read any of his stuff. Now, publishers NBM are releasing a collection of his daily musings, of which you can see more of at NBM’s blog. I liked James Kochalka’s American Elf with its anthropomorphic slice of life stories and this looks to be similarly entertaining. All the details below. Oh, and NBM still have their great $4 sale on too!

Little Nothings CvrLITTLE NOTHINGS

Vol. 3: “Uneasy Happiness”

Lewis TRONDHEIM

Trondheim’s comics blog’s next collection of his popular musings on the every day ironies of life, his little anxieties, funny observations while on travel, his way of finding some cloud over the brightest sunshine, his obsessive hypochondria and other oh-so-easy-to-relate-to nerdy preoccupations. As he says himself, it’s whole lotta not much. And people are lovin’ it:

“Fans of James Kochalka’s American Elf will find he has an international soulmate in Lewis Trondheim.” -The Onion

“If this isn’t the best thing that NBM has ever published in its 30 years of making graphic albums available to the English-language market, it’s one of the top three.”

-Tom Spurgeon, Comics Reporter.

G.I. Joe: Resolute DVD

As mentioned earlier in the week the excellent collection of animated short films written by comics writer Warren Ellis is now on DVD, on Region 1 at least. Us Region 4ers have to wait until early December, but it is worth the wait. Resolute is great and serves as a mature antidote to the live action film and presents all the techno stuff and violence that Ellis loves to create. Here’s the trailer, and below are a few storyboards to give you a taste of the action.

Lights Motion Comic

Lights Motion Comic 1I’ve been discovering some great music lately (Mute Math is my current band of the moment) and it looks like I can add another artist to my list. Lights is a young Canadian singer who likes Phil Collins and whose artwork for her latest album The Listening was inspired by Watchmen. What’s not to like? Yep, the love affair between music and comics continues. I recently interviewed nerdcore band Kirby Krackle and have an interview with Coheed and Cambria frontman Claudio Sanchez in January’s Arcana #1 magazine, and let’s not forget that Anthrax’s Scott Ian’s 2 issue Lobo series from DC Comics launches this week.

Well, below is a press release about Lights and her new collaboration with comics artist Tom Cokker on a motion comic (yes, they’re all the rage these days). This 4 part series is pretty good as a visually interesting nod to simple good vs evil comic tales. Check out the first one below.

Keytar-wielding synth-pop sensation, LIGHTS, is currently starring in Audio Quest: A Captain LIGHTS Adventure. The first episode of the ten-part short-form motion comic series premiered on MTV and three further episodes have now been released, following Captain LIGHTS on her galactic adventure to restore sound to the universe. Audio Quest is a natural evolution for LIGHTS – a talented visual artist herself, who remains no stranger to science fiction and the world of comics.

Featuring artwork of renowned visual artists, Tomm Coker, Audio Quest remains a stunning visual expression of a gifted pop star’s point of view. Experience the adventure and check out Audio Quest: A Captain LIGHTS Adventure Issues 1-4 below!

This Is It Review

This Is ItAfter watching this Michael Jackson memorial/documentary/concert film, you’ll know at least two things: the King of Pop deserves that title and his London shows would have been spectacular. However there’s no sadness haunting this almost 2 hour long flick. No “R.I.P Michael Jackson-1958-2009” or any such sentiment. There’s no mention of the controversy surrounding him, or any looks at old photographs of his childhood. In fact nothing is actually learned about the legendary entertainer himself. However we are presented a side of Jackson that we’ve never seen before. In This Is It he looks surprisingly …normal.

He laughs with the concert’s co-creator and director of this film, Kenny Ortega as well as his obviously grateful dancers and band. Jackson doesn’t talk a lot, but is very humble and thankful, and at 50 years old is still as good as ever in this film. He dances like no-one else (but I didn’t spot a Moonwalk) and gives his all throughout the rehearsals in California’s The Forum and Staples Center presented here, apart from the occasional vocal break to save his voice for the show itself. Mostly This Is It consists of Jackson and dancers performing infront of an empty arena and all the hits (Beat It, Earth Song, Billie Jean, etc) sound great.

The toe-tapping film is only in cinemas for 2 weeks, but it has the feel of a DVD extra with its behind the scenes approach. The DVD will be released early next year and for Jackson fans it’s a must have item. It’s not necessary to see it in the cinema unless you can’t wait until next year, but the extra bits made specifically for the concert, such as the 3-D Thriller piece, serve as a reminder of what an awesome show this would’ve been. Jackson truly was a legend and there won’t be another like him. This Is It serves as a tender acknowledgement of the man’s gifts. Simply, Jackson was born to do this and doesn’t want to do it alone. The staff around him are understandably slightly awed in his presence, but he offers only love, with “God bless you,” and “I love you,” being his favourite phrases. The man was a master at his craft and we should be glad that we have this final glimpse of him at work.

Spawn #196

The countdown for February’s Spawn #200 is on and according to the teaser in November’s Previews catalogue features a host of talent, including the gentlemen mentioned below, but also David Finch, Marc Silvestri, Robert Kirkman and Jim Lee. That’s a star studded roster right there. Press release below regarding this month’s Spawn #196.

TODD MCFARLANE TEAMS UP WITH IMAGE FOUNDER AND YOUNGBLOOD CREATOR ROB LIEFELD ON SPAWN #196!

Image Comics founders and IMAGE UNITED collaborators join forces on the highly anticipated finale to SPAWN: ENDGAME!

Spawn #196For the past year, SPAWN: ENDGAME has riveted readers with its game-changing story line featuring the death of Al Simmons and Todd McFarlane’s return to illustrating his seminal creation. In November’s SPAWN #196, ENDGAME concludes with a bang as McFarlane shares art duties with fellow Image Comics founder Rob Liefeld.

“I was looking for good artistic help, and remembered inking over Rob on his New Mutant covers back in the Marvel days, and most recently a little bit of IMAGE UNITED,” McFarlane said. “I thought it would be a fun experiment to see what Capullo layouts, Liefeld pencils and my inks looked like together on a handful of pages.”

In the conclusion of SPAWN: ENDGAME, reporter Marc Rosen connects the miracle patient stories to the new SPAWN, Jim Downing, as detectives Sam, Twitch and Rowand discover the association between Downing’s awakening, Bill Winston’s suicide and the Nortego crime syndicate.

SPAWN #196 (JUL090355), a 32-page full color comic book for $2.95, will be in-stores November 25th, 2009.

Prince Of Persia Trailer

In cinemas on May 28 next year is another Jerry Bruckheimer blockbuster. Based on the awesomely acrobatic video games, the film stars a newly buff Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton from Quantum of Solace, as well as Ben Kingsley and Alfred Molina. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is directed by Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire).

Eye Witness On iPhone

Robert Luedke is a Christian artist who is making some serious strides into the mainstream with his Eye Witness graphic novels. Now he’s on the iPhone. Press release below.

On Friday October 29th, Comixology just released the Revised edition of first book in the Eye Witness series A FICTIONAL TALE OF ABSOLUTE TRUTH for their iphone application.  This is the first location outside of the Head Press Publishing website, where fans of comics and graphic novels can have a chance to purchase and read the revised and remastered edition of the first book in the award winning series.

75ACTSofSpirit“I’m very excited to have Eye Witness be a part of this new mode of reading and enjoying this type of content,” stated series creator, Robert Luedke. “I’d always been skeptical that people would be comfortable  reading comic or graphic novel style format in a hand held device, but when I got a look at Comixology’s application I was blown away by it’s functionality and immediately gave my blessing to the project.”

Having the revised edition the A Fictional Tale of Absolute Truth, be the first offering in this format was a natural fit for HPP, since that edition of the book was only available as an electronic version (PDF) through their website. Comixology has formatted this first book into 3 segments. Each chapter costs 99 cents, so it’s quite a bargain! The plan is to next convert the second book in the series, Acts of the Spirit, to this format also.

Comixology is a wonderful tool for reading comics and GN’s on your iphone which allows to to view by panel, page, go forward, back, zoom in-out and even provides a link to purchase a hard copy from a local retailer. To learn more about how the comixology app works, visit their video tutorial, at:

http://www.comixology.com/iphoneapp/

Since 2007, through it’s comiXology brand, Iconology, Inc. has been working to expose more people to the world of comics, through comiXology.com and related applications. “We are uniquely situated to connect all parts of the comic book industry…consumers, distributors, publishers, creators and even comic book retailers,” stated David Steinberger of Comixology. “IPhone, Blackberry apps and digital comics are all connected through the comiXology platform.”

Luedke created the Eye Witness series, as a way to share the spiritual, historical and dramatic nature of the Bible, in a way that is both attractive and entertaining…especially to teen and young adult readers, who may not attend church or read the Bible, but love reading comics, manga and graphic novels. His unique combination of a Biblical adaptation with a modern day action-thriller has proven successful not only in comic outlets, but also with mainstream and Christian booksellers.

Arcana Mag Synopsis

Yes, yes, I know I keep talking about this new magazine venture of mine, but I’m so very proud and can’t wait to unleash it on the public. Our first issue is in the current Previews catalogue (page 184) but my synopsis had to be cut short due to space constraints, so below is what it looks like in November’s Previews, plus my original description of its awesome contents.
