Guardians of the Galaxy Trailer

Marvel Studios’ potential new franchise launcher opens in August. Not much has been revealed about it, but now we have the first trailer. Ramping up the fun and irreverence, this film based on the not exactly well-known comic series, and directed by James Gunn (Super, Slither) looks pretty great.

From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team — the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits — Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace is poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand — with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.

Rival moviemakers 20th Century Fox also launched 17 new mid-shot character pics from May’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, but let’s be honest, you want to watch that trailer again, don’t you?

Deadpool and Spider-Man Infinite Comics Previews

Infinite Comics is Marvel’s new approach of making comics work on mobile devices, with original content made specifically for phones and tablets. It’s a good idea for those who want to read something new which they can fit in their pocket, and take out while they’re waiting for their bus to arrive. Below are two press releases and a text-free preview, about Deadpool’s second issue of The Gauntlet, and a soon to be released series starring an amnesiac Spider-Man. Spidey’s series is entitled Who Am I and kicks off in April (yes, with the returning Peter Parker. Yay!)

Marvel Fact Files In Australia

The weekly publication that informs the curious about the Marvel Universe has been available in the UK for some time, and now it’s available in Australia, thanks to Eaglemoss Collections.

You can get a rundown of what it’s all about here, but it’s essentially a newbie’s guide to the characters and events of Marvel’s storied history. After reading the first issue, I can confidently say that it’s pretty good, in an educational, easy to read way, and will serve as a good introduction to what curious cinemagoers see of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The first issue is only $3, while future (of the planned 100) issues are $7 each. You can subscribe and get a few goodies, such as a calendar, t-shirt and 2 figurines. Each issue is 32 pages and features timelines, character summaries, timelines and heaps of cool art.

Second Thor: The Dark World Trailer

It’s not that different from the first actually. Chris Hemsworth returns as the thunder god, Natalie Portman travels to his home and Tom Hiddleston and former Doctor Who Christopher Eccleston are the bad guys (Loki and Malekith respectively).

The Thor sequel opens on October 30, or November 8, depending on where you live.

Eric Guzman’s Mash-Ups

Remember when Marvel and DC joined forces and created two series of one-shots that featured combinations of their characters? If not, go here.

Well, artist Eric Guzman has created a great series of similar mash-ups starring Batman and Spider-Man and their various villains, plus a few extras such as Shazam/Thor, and Superman/Captain America. Check out his gallery here.

Marvel Heroes Opening Cinematic

There’s some great animation here. This is the opener for the free Marvel Heroes game created by Gazillion, and written by comics scribe Brian Michael Bendis. It looks fluid, and sums up the origins of some great Marvel heroes beautifully.

You can check the game out here.

S.H.I.E.L.D and Arrested Development Trailers

Agent Phil Coulson is back from the dead, in typical comic book fashion. He may have died in The Avengers, but now he’s headlining the new Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D TV series, with new recruits by his side. Yes, his resurrection will be explained and yes, the pilot was co-written and directed by Joss Whedon.

SHIELD TV poster

Seven years after going off the air, we’re getting another season of one of the funniest, most quotable series ever made – Arrested Development! Yay! The 3 seasons are very re-watchable and 15 new episodes will be available all at once on May 26 from Netflix.

Iron Man 3 Review

At Broken Frontier you can check out my review of Iron Man 3. We got it here early in Australia, like we did with Thor, and Tintin. It opens in the rest of the world this week.

Thor: The Dark World Trailer

Ahead of tomorrow’s release of Iron Man 3 (here in Australia, anyway) comes the first trailer for the Thor sequel, reuniting the cast form the original, and with Doctor Who’s Christopher Eccleston as bad guy Malekith. I like the way the familiar Marvel logo becomes Thor’s cape, but I’m getting tired of seeing London destroyed again, after witnessing its destruction in G.I. Joe Retaliation, and the upcoming Star Trek sequel.

Just as Marvel’s “Thor: The Dark World” continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel’s “Thor” and “Marvels The Avengers,” Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.

Stuff I’ve Been Reading

Including some good stuff, and some not so good stuff.

One of my goals as of late has been to read more novels, and that’s what I’ve been doing on my lunch breaks at work. Over the last few months I’ve read Robopocalypse by Daniel H. Wilson. It’s kind of in the vein of World War Z, but I much preferred Wilson’s 2011 book, and Steven Spielberg has been attached to a film version for a while, but that’s now on hold. I also read, or rather almost finished Eric Van Lustbader’s The Bourne Deception. I picked it up for $5 at one of those discount book warehouses not far from my workplace, but with its expanding list of characters, and ties to previous novels in Lustbader’s Bourne books, I just couldn’t keep reading it every day when I knew I had other books waiting for me . I treat films the same way. I give them 30 mins and if they don’t grab me, I stop watching. The most recent film to suffer from my cinematic snobbery was Bachelorette.

Thankfully, even though I’m spending less on comics now, I still enjoy my weekly trip to the local comic book shops, and the library now holds new monthly issues of Marvel, DC and Image series. This is good news, and I hope many other libraries do this too. Two of the women who work there are impressively knowledgeable about comics, clearly beings fans, and I always make  a point to talk to them about sequential art.

This is how I’ve been reading Indestructible Hulk by Mark Waid and Leinil Francis Yu, and All New X-men by Brian Michael Bendis, Stuart Immonen and David Marquez. I’ve read the first 6 issues of the Green Goliath’s adventures, and it’s the best run I’ve read since Peter David’s game changing approach in the ’90s. So far it’s featured a sympathetic Bruce Banner who now works for S.H.I.E.L.D and features wit and drama, plus surprises like appearances by the Quintronic Man, and undersea tyrant Attuma. The latest issue is drawn by Walt Simonson and although his style is quite different from Yu’s, the legendary penciller known mainly for his epic run on Thor, excels here, plus throws in a mysterious retro look for the Norse hammer wielder too.

Indestructible Hulk is like Waid’s current work on Daredevil. It may not always be accessible to newbies, but it’s fun, intense superhero action.

Apart from Injustice: Gods Among Us, the videogame tie-in that’s rocketing up the sales charts, my other fave ongoing at the moment is All New X-Men. Yes, it’s yet another fresh relaunch, but this time it actually is fresh. In short, Beast, sensing his demise due to his growing mutations, gets so desperate that he travels back in time to the original five X-Men and asks them to see how dangerous, and cynical Scott Summers, AKA Cyclops has become. I’d say many of the readers who grew up reading the original X-Men adventures in the ’60s aren’t reading today’s version, but the naivete of the founding members clashing with their vastly different counterparts, and the far scarier world they left is a great set up. Stuart Immonen is one of my fave artists and his 5 issues kicked things off tremendously, and David Marquez carries on the oh so pretty visuals. Immonen is back for a while though, with the current ish (#9) showing what he can do with a great battle against giant robotic Sentinels.

Spider-Man: Now Even More Superior

Now that Peter Parker is dead (kind of), and his enemy Doc Ock is in his body, Spider-Man has become Superior. In July two more villain-centric mini-series are coming our way with the Superior moniker.

Take A Walk On The Dark Side With THE SUPERIOR FOES OF SPIDER-MAN!

This July, critically acclaimed writer Nick Spencer and Eisner Award winning artist Steve Lieber put fans in the shoes of the all-new Sinister Six with TheSuperior Foes of Spider-Man #1! This all new ongoing, launching during Superior Spider-Month, gives fans a whole new look into the world of Superior Spider-Man,  great for lapsed and new readers alike!

With superior power comes superior responsibility…and superior villains!  Boomerang, Shocker, Speed Demon, the Beetle, and Overdrive take a cue from the Superior Spider-Man and get upgraded for a new era of evil – and the score of a lifetime! It’s a tale of suspense that’ll turn the Marvel Universe upside down – as only THE SUPERIOR FOES OF SPIDER-MAN can!

“The beauty of the Spider-Man world has always been that for all the web-slinging action and adventure, Peter Parker lives in the world outside your window and his villains reflect that,” explains Tom Brennan, editor, Marvel Entertainment. “The new world of Superior Spider-Man demands a look at the lives, lies, schemes and dreams of his villains.  Spider-Man’s evolved – will his villains as well?”

Following the embarrassing beating from Superior Spider-Man #1, can Boomerang and crew rebound to prove once and for all they can make it in the big leagues?

“This is a book about the working class guys; these are not the Kingpins or Green Goblins or Doc Ocks of the world,” explains Spencer in an interview with Marvel.com. “These are the small-time crooks looking for a quick score so they can pay their alimony and get the loan shark off their back. A lot of the book is from Boomerang’s perspective, and he’s very much aware of that—and he sees this new Sinister Six he’s formed as one last big shot at real money and real power. He’s got a lot riding on this.”

This July, Spencer and Lieber tangle with the Spider-Verse’s newly-infamous villains in The Superior Foes of Superior Spider-Man #1!

A New Beast Unleashed – SUPERIOR CARNAGE #1!

Shinick & Segovia Put A Superior Spin On A Deadly Classic

This July, the red-hot creative team of writer Kevin Shinick(Avenging Spider-Man, Robot Chicken) and Stephen Segovia (X-treme X-Men, Thor) unleash a supercharged new beast into the world of Superior Spider-Man with Superior Carnage #1! This five issue limited series, launching during Superior Spider-Month, gives fans a whole new look into the world of Superior Spider-Man – great for new and lapsed readers alike!

The homicidal villain, Carnage, is deteriorating in the confines of his asylum—but his fellow inmates are not giving up just yet! Watch as their Frankenstein-style experiment unfolds for better or for worse. Can they restore the deadliest of the symbiotes to its former glory, or better yet, do they have what it takes to build a more dastardly, more sinister, more superior Carnage?

“This is a Carnage story that will send shivers down the backs of anyone who reads it,” explained Sana Amanat, Editor, Marvel Entertainment. “What Kevin and Stephen have planned for the character is unlike any Carnage story that’s come before it, and surely will be one that will have fans demanding more of when it’s all said and done. Want to know why people love Carnage so much? Jump on here.”

But with a catatonic Kasady, who will emerge? The Beast or the Man?

“I’m really excited to be working on Superior Carnage. It’s very rare that you can say the words “Like you’ve never seen him before!” and truly mean it,” explains Shinick. “But Stephen and I have been working on some great designs for what happens when the Wizard attempts to turn Carnage into an agent of evil the way the Avengers converted Venom for good! Plus now that Cletus Kasady has essentially been lobotomized, readers (and the Wizard) are going to encounter a monster very different from what they were expecting.”

This July, Shinick and Segovia restore life and grotesque brutality to one of Spider-Man’s greatest threats in Superior Carnage #1!

Iron Man’s Many Armours and Injustice Videos

Iron Man 3 opens in May and yes, there will be over 40 different suits of armour in the film. Tony’s been a busy boy, as Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige describes.

“We have what we call the prehensile suit, which allows each individual piece of the suit to fly separately and latch on to him. It doesn’t quite work perfectly, but it is a great advancement that Tony uses throughout this movie, so that wherever he is, theoretically, he can call it to him and it can arrive. It doesn’t always work, and there’s a great scene in the movie, which we gave a little taste of to fans at Comic-Con this year in a giveaway of an art poster that Ryan Meinerding had done, where the entire suit doesn’t come to him. He just gets one glove and one boot and has to fight off a battalion of bad guys with just the boot and just the glove. “It’s often the limitations of the suit that can provide the most fun-when the suit breaks, when the suit doesn’t quite work — and there’s that in spades. We also, though, hint early on in the film by mentioning that this is not the Mark 8 as you might think because the Mark 7 was the last suit revealed in “The Avengers.” It’s the Mark 42. So there are well over 40 suits that Tony has built in between the time of “The Avengers” and “Iron Man 3″ because of his obsession. By the end of the film, we see each and every one of them, and you realize Tony is a mechanic and he has been tinkering. Any conceivable idea he had about the suit technology he built and stored in his Hall of Armor. Finally, after talking about it for four movies we finally see his Hall of Armor and the giant army of suits that he’s built for himself.”

Iron Man 3 Igor

Iron Man 3 Red Snapper

You can check out 6 of those awesome suits here, but it looks like the classic Hulkbuster armour from the comics has yet to reveal itself, although the Igor suit somewhat resembles it. Oh, and if you’re in Disneyland you’ll be able to see some of those suits at a new exhibit that runs from April 13 to September.

I’ve never been a hug fan of fighting video games, although I spent many hours in my high school years playing Street Fighter 2. However, any chance to play as DC Comics characters has my interest, and Injustice: Gods Among Us continues to intrigue me, the more I see of it. Take these 3 videos for example. 240 missions? Surprise characters such as Martian Manhunter and Giganta (and possibly Lobo)! Sold! A demo for the much anticipated game will be released on April 2.

Avengers: Endless Wartime Preview

In October comes a rare OGN from Marvel, although their newbie friendly Season One series have been rather hit and miss. Their Hulk one was great, and I did read the Ant-Man one from the library, and it was pretty average. However, with the duo behind this Avengers tale, and the preview pages below, it’s a safe bet that Endless Wartime will be entertaining.
