Deadpool and Spider-Man Infinite Comics Previews

Infinite Comics is Marvel’s new approach of making comics work on mobile devices, with original content made specifically for phones and tablets. It’s a good idea for those who want to read something new which they can fit in their pocket, and take out while they’re waiting for their bus to arrive. Below are two press releases and a text-free preview, about Deadpool’s second issue of The Gauntlet, and a soon to be released series starring an amnesiac Spider-Man. Spidey’s series is entitled Who Am I and kicks off in April (yes, with the returning Peter Parker. Yay!)

Deadpool: The Gauntlet #2 On-Sale Today!

Marvel’s Next Groundbreaking Infinite Comic Series Continues Today!

After a tousle with Dracula, Deadpool becomes something far worse than undead—the Lord of Vampires’ whipping boy! And the servitude for his blood-sucking highness begins now inDeadpool: The Gauntlet #2, the second chapter in a 13-part all-new Infinite Comics series!

Designed specifically for mobile devices, Infinite Comics showcase the storytelling possibilities of a digital canvas while still staying true to the mediums greatest strengths!

Deadpool’s first assignment? Obtain and secure a very special package for Dracula (which may or may not damn all of mankind. Just saying.). Shouldn’t be too hard for the Merc With a Mouth—once he looks past the booby-trap laden secret tomb it’s hidden in. Oh, and teleporting warriors. Lots and lots of teleporting warriors.

As Deadpool slashes through his most absurd adventure yet, the Gauntlet is finally thrown in the year’s hottest digital comic! And the wedding bells will only ring louder as Wade takes another step towards his marriage to (You Wish!) in April’s mega-sized DEADPOOL #27!

Available right at your fingertips, Deadpool: The Gauntlet #2 is available on the Marvel Comics app (for iPhone®, iPad®, iPod Touch® & AndroidTM devices) and online in the Marvel Digital Comics Shop!

Peter and Wally Return, Michael Debuts

Peter Parker is Spider-Man. “Of course he is,” you say! “Everyone knows that!”

Well, let me clarify. Peter Parker is Spider-Man – again.

For the last year, Doctor Octopus has been secretly running (and swinging) around in Peter Parker’s body, while Parker has been desperately trying to reclaim it. It was a bold and controversial move at the time, but after 25 issues of the re-named “Superior” Spider-Man, plus two spin-off titles, and a surprising amount of critical praise and fan acceptance, Peter is back in costume in April’s Amazing Spider-Man #1.

Read a great interview with the writer of all this Dan Slott right here.

Numbercruncher Collection Out Now

From UK based publisher Titan Comics, here’s the official lowdown on the now available collection of the recent Numbercruncher mini-series, plus a cool trailer and a few random, and pretty, pages. I like what they’ve done with the mix of colour and black and white art. It fits really well on the page.

Heaven: the ultimate bureaucracy.

At its head, not a white-haired anthropomorphic deity with a harp and a throne but a wizened, weaselling old man with bad breath and bad attitude. At his right hand, Bastard Zane, a surly civil servant with a big gun whose job it is to stop those who think they can buck karma.

And then there’s Richard Thyme: genius mathematician and a man who will do whatever it takes to defy Fate and return to his one true love – even if he is dead.

Cue a critically-acclaimed and twisted tale of reincarnation, resurrection and Karmic Accountancy! Mesmerisingly written by the superb Si Spurrier (X-Men: Legacy, Crossed: Wish You Where Here) with gorgeous art from PJ Holden (2000 AD) and colorist Jordie Bellaire (Captain Marvel, Rocketeers, Manhattan Project), this is for anyone who has ever wanted to beat the system – senseless!

Finally, the head-spinning adventure ‘Numbercruncher’ is collected for the first time ever in this single gorgeous hardback volume.

Lucy Knisley At Fantagraphics

Fantagraphics are one of those indie publishers who continue to release surprising comics from around the globe, as well as give gorgeous presentations to comics from decades ago. The last such delight I read from the publisher was Young Romance, a wonderful collection of classic love stories from legendary creators Joe Simon and Jack Kirby (the pair who created Captain America BTW).

I always look forward to checking out their wares each month in the Previews comics catalogue for something new. Besides works from respected creators such as Peter Bagge, Daniel Clowes and Carl Barks, they also bring to English speaking shores  award winning, critic loving sequential art stories from countries we don’t normally associate with comics. Below is a press release about two new graphic novels from writer/artist Lucy Knisley, and published by Fantagraphics. I must confess that I haven’t read anything of hers, but I’m aware of her last OGN, Relish from First Second Books and you can find out more about Knisley at her website.

Lucy Knisley An Age of License

Fantagraphics Books is excited to announce the acquisition of two new comics travel memoirs by acclaimed cartoonist Lucy Knisley. Fall 2014 brings An Age of License, which recounts Knisley’s charming and romantic adventures across Europe on a quest to discover what is truly important in life, find love along the way. Displacement is a travelogue about taking her elderly grandparents on a cruise, and pondering the meaning of life, while trying to hold her family together. The deal was brokered by Holly Bemiss at The Susan Rabiner Literary Agency.

New York Times Best Selling cartoonist Knisley garnered fame from her two previous graphic novels Relish and French Milk. She is also well known for her ongoing web comic, Stop Paying Attention, the latest of which is “A Light That Never Goes Out.” Knisley’s greatest strength lays in her keen ability to tell her story to both young adult and mature readers.

“I’m really excited to finally be working with Fantagraphics, which I’ve admired for years,” Knisley explains. “These books are an exploration of youth and freedom, versus responsibility and family, and I’m so glad Fantagraphics is the company to help me tell these stories.”

Much like the HBO series Girls, Knisley speaks to a generation of young women who are fiercely independent and yearn for adventure. The Eat, Pray, Love for the “social media” generation, An Age of License is a series of illustrated snapshots of a life full of cute cats, fancy food, and exotic travel.

100 Movies To See In 2014

The surprisingly awesome (so far anyway) Robocop remake, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Godzilla, Amazing Spider-Man 2, a wild interpretation of Noah, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Expendables 3. Whoa. This year will be a good one for films. Yes, as usual lately there’s a ton of remakes and sequels, but also some interesting titles I don’t know much about.

Diamond Announces Top Comic Books & Graphic Novels of 2013

Marvel Comics top publisher; Image Comics’ The Walking Dead #115 was the year’s top comic

Image Comics’ The Walking Dead #115 was the best-selling comic book published in 2013 based on total unit sales to comic book specialty shops, according to Diamond Comic Distributors, the world’s largest distributor of comics, graphic novels, and pop-culture merchandise.

Written by creator Robert Kirkman and illustrated by Charlie Adlard, The Walking Dead #115 celebrated the zombie series’ 10th-anniversary and kicked off the “All-Out War” storyline with twelve different covers, ten of which interlocked to create one large image.

Demonstrating the strength of the comic book specialty market, comics and graphic novels had another strong year, with 2013’s annual sales increasing 9.04% over the previous year, as comic book sales were up 10.22%, while graphic novel sales were up by 6.5%.

Marvel Comics finished the year as the comic book specialty market’s top publisher, leading both Dollar and Unit Market Shares, with a 33.50% Dollar Market Share and a 36.97% Unit Market Share.  Marvel Comics had six titles in the top ten, led by Guardians of the Galaxy #1 in the third spot.

DC Entertainment was the comic book specialty market’s number two publisher in 2013 with a 30.33% Dollar Market Share and a 33.35% Unit Market Share. DC Entertainment published three of the year’s top ten comic books and thirteen of the top twenty, with Justice League of America #1 charting as 2013’s second best-selling comic book title.

The first volume of Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples’ Saga from Image Comics was the year’s top-selling graphic novel and helped propel Image Comics to be the third largest comic book publisher, with a with a 8.00% Dollar Market Share and a 8.49% Unit Market Share. A science-fiction epic of love and family in a time of interstellar war, Saga received the Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story from the wider science-fiction community in September. Image Comics had seven of the top ten graphic novels, including five volumes of Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead.

IDW Publishing’s mix of licensed comic books, creator-owned titles and groundbreaking art books fortified the company as the comic book specialty market’s fourth largest publisher. The company’s market share rose .90% in 2013, up to 6.47% dollar market share. My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic Volume 1 based on the fan-favorite animated series was IDW’s top-selling graphic novel for the year.

Dark Horse Comics was the fifth leading comic book publisher to the comic book specialty market in 2013 with a 5.17% retail dollar market share, gaining .36% over its 2012 total. Coupled with the year’s top-selling book, The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia, Dark Horse solidified its position as a top seller in both the comic book specialty and book markets worldwide.

2014 Is Dark Horse’s Year

Sure, they may have just announced that they’ve (unsurprisingly) lost their licence for their critically acclaimed Star Wars comics to Marvel, but that’s not all that Dark Horse publish. It is a shame that as of next year, no more Star Wars comics will come from the Horse as they have added significant layers to the SW mythos over the last twenty years, but Dark Horse are confident that their diverse line to continue to impress audiences this year. Official press release below.

DARK HORSE PROCLAIMS 2014 TO BE

THE YEAR OF THE HORSE!

Before we had even taken the time to look at the Chinese zodiac calendar, we knew 2014 was shaping up to be one of the best in Dark Horse Comics’ nearly thirty-year history!

In 2013, Dark Horse saw record sales growth in every channel and received what may have been moreaccolades than ever for its publishing line.

As we enter 2014, we go boldly into a year that, as the Chinese foretold, was destined to be ours!

We have partnered with our good friends at Comic Book Resources to bring Dark Horse fans an early look at what the year holds in every aspect of the business, from new comic series to books and products. Today we begin a four-part interview with Dark Horse president and founder Mike Richardson.

Look for a new interview each week and exclusive announcements, first looks, and more!

YearoftheHorseFB

Before we look forward though, let’s look at the past. Dark Horse have done very well in publishing some of the best comics of 2013, as you can see below.

DARK HORSE TOPS A RECORD NUMBER

OF YEAR-END LISTS IN 2013!

In 2013, Dark Horse set records in every sense of the word. The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia topped nearly every major bestseller list and the Nielsen BookScan report! The company saw record sales in all markets, as well as at every major convention! Multiple titles sold out of first printings! New original series like Steve Niles and Dave Wachter’s Breath of Bones garnered 10 out of 10 reviews for their entire run! It didn’t stop there. Just before the new year, as critics’ year-end lists rolled in, Dark Horse found a place on nearly every one of them!

As we bid adieu to a banner year, we’d be remiss not to share one last highlight with you . .

Ladies and gentlemen, we give you the very best of 2013!

Justice League: War Clip

DC Comics/ Warner Bros. have been making great animated films for the last few years, at the rate of about two a year it seems. These are always accessible to those new to comics, and are always based on some classic and recent tales, and come with entertaining and informative bonus features. Since DC have a hit (Young Justice, Batman: The Brave and the Bold) and miss (quickly cancelled Beware the Batman!) ratio when it comes to their cartoons on TV, these animated films are a much safer bet.

Their next one is called Justice League: War and is based on the first few issues of the 2011 comics tale told by writer Geoff Johns and artist Jim Lee about how the League first met. Below is the first official clip, which seems to follow the comic pretty closely, and a description.

When the powerful Darkseid and his massive, relentless forces invade Earth, a group of previously unaligned super heroes – misunderstood and, in some cases, hunted by the authorities – discover the only way to fend off the attack will be to work together as a cohesive unit. Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, Shazam and, in his origin story, Cyborg combine their respective talents in an all-out battle to save the planet. Based on the 2012 graphic novel, “Justice League: Origin,” by Geoff Johns & Jim Lee, Justice League: War provides a glance into the world before the Justice League was created, and offers the initial animated incarnation of DC Entertainment’s “The New 52.”

“Justice League: War” arrives via Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD and Digitial HD on February 4, 2014from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.

For something more active, you may like to try Relevant’s 25 suggestions for a great Christmas. Also at Relevant, is this great article about the classic Christmas carol, O Holy Night. Here’s an excerpt to remind us of what Christmas really is about.
Because this Christmas, like the first one, isn’t holy. It’s just a day. But what we celebrate on this day—what we remember—is the birth of a Savior whocan handle our expectations. And our fear and anger and loneliness. It’s not just met by Jesus. It’s why he came in the first place. The only way to redeem an unholy world is with a holy sacrifice.
Merry CHRISTmas everyone!

Read Letter 44 #1 For Free

A new series from Oni Press and writer Charles Soule and artist Alberto Jiminez Alburquerque entitled Letter 44 is now available to read for free. Well, the entire first issue anyway. The second issue is out now. io9 describe it thusly: the newest president is taken aback when he reads the letter from the man who preceded him — a man who seemed to tank the economy and embroil the nation in needless wars — but was actually secretly preparing America for an imminent alien invasion.

COLLECTOR’S PARADISE GOES BEYOND BLACK FRIDAY SALE WITH “BUY 2 GET 1 FREE ON ANYTHING IN THE STORE”, COMICS BY THE POUND, AND A TWO WEEK PROGRESSIVE DISCOUNT GRAPHIC NOVEL SALE AT BOTH COLLECTOR’S PARADISE STORES!

Los Angeles area’s Leading Retail Comic Book Store Chain expands the concept of Black Friday Sale into a weeks-long event with unprecedented discounts throughout the stores, and a Graphic Novel Sale that tests your patience for two weeks.

Collector’s Paradise Comics & Gallery, is proud to announce that we will, once again, be bringing Progressive Graphic Novel Sale as part of our Black Friday promotion to Los Angeles area this year.

Last year’s Black Friday two-week event was fantastic.” said owner Edward Greenberg, adding:  ” We learned so much about how to do this, and will use the lessons this year to provide an even better experience for our customers.”

While many stores host Black Friday events, Collector’s Paradise decided that this year they would try out a new approach: Buy 2 Get 1 FREE on Anything in the store, mix and match.  A customer can buy an action figure, a t-shirt and a graphic novel, and the lowest of the three items is FREE.  It’s a “design your own sale Sale”.

Comics by the Pound is another way to make a Sale more fun for the customers.  There will be a huge selection of comic books available in boxes, for customers to look through and pick the ones they would like to buy for just $3 per pound.  Considering an average single comic book is about $4 these days, getting a bunch of them for just $3 is an amazing deal.  Not only that, but every purchase gives you an entry into our raffle where one winner per store will win an amount up to what they have bought for FREE .

The most ambitious part of the Black Friday Sale is something not heard of in the comic book industry, the Progressive Discount Graphic Novel Sale.  On BlackFriday, the stores will have boxes full of graphic novels at 50% off.  Whatever does not sell that day, will be 52% off next day, 54% off the following day, and so on, until 2 weeks later, when it reaches 80% off for whatever is still left over.  Every customer will have to make a decision on whether to wait out for a higher discount or to buy the books before someone else grabs them.  It’s a fun and exciting way to get deals on awesome reads.
