Biowars

Biowars is a new comic (below is a preview of its 4th issue) which has an intriguing jumping off point – a war in microcosm. The production values and pretty impressive, especially for a free, digital comic. Obviously a lot of thought and creativity has gone in to this project.

Biowars is a digital comic book series featuring an exciting pair of intertwining storylines. While Alexander Hawking fights the sinister forces of the Combine in the outer world, the heroic BioWarriors of his immune system must defend his inner world against a deadly Combine-engineered pathogen. Biowars seeks to open the audience’s imagination to the wondrous alien world that lies within the human body and the strange threats it must face on a daily basis.

Biowars involves readers in its production by regularly engaging its over 100k Facebook fans. With this fan base growing daily, Biowars is the crux of a vibrant and active comic community.

Free Eve: True Stories Comic

Free comics! Based on actual player driven stories from the huge EVE game, EVE: True Stories is certainly a novel concept, and now you can read the first issue for free.

CCP Games, the world’s leading independent developer of massively multiplayer games and creators of EVE Online, along with Dark Horse, are pleased to announce that the first issue of EVE: True Stories, “Thieves Among Us,” is now available as a free download from Dark Horse Digital or via the Dark Horse Android and iOS apps.

Issue #1 of the EVE: True Stories graphic novel dramatizes the opening throes of one of the greatest gaming stories of the last decade – the fall of the player alliance known as the Band of Brothers. Filled with action and intrigue, “Thieves Among Us” is inspired by actual player-driven events. Issue #1 is written by legendary writer Daniel Way (Wolverine: Origins, Deadpool) and features the artwork of Tomm Coker (Daredevil Noir, Near Death) with cover art by David Palumbo (ALIENS, Heavy Metal). 

Future instalments of EVE: True Stories will arrive digitally on 5th March, 19thMarch and 2nd April 2014, via Dark Horse Digital.

The hardback prestige collected edition of EVE: True Stories, containing all four comics, will go on sale in book and comic book stores, 4th June, 2014.

ComiXology in France

Digital comics shop are currently in France for the annual comics festival, and have uploaded some pretty cool pics from the experience on their Tumblr, including some great journalling from Jeremy Nguyen (check out Craig Thompson’s Carnet de Voyage for a similar, excellent, arty journal), and a look at the demographics of comics readers in France.

Angouléme keeps rolling on and we keep on having a great time here in France. ComiXologist Jeremy Nguyen, who not only is one of the many people behind transforming each week’s comics in to Guided View but is an accomplished illustrator himself, has joined us this year and is doing a journal of the experience. Deadpool and Spider-Man Infinite Comics Previews

Infinite Comics is Marvel’s new approach of making comics work on mobile devices, with original content made specifically for phones and tablets. It’s a good idea for those who want to read something new which they can fit in their pocket, and take out while they’re waiting for their bus to arrive. Longbox Digital Comics

Longbox LogoAt Heroes Con this past weekend, Rantz Hoseley, who was the editor behind the popular Tori Amos inspired works within the Comic Book Tatttoo anthology, premiered Longbox. It’s nothing new exactly, as digital subscription services for comics have been around for a while now. However, there appears to be some genuine buzz about this software and just what it means. There’s an interesting interview with Hoseley up at comicbookresources now. BOOM! Studios and Top Cow are the first to sign up and individual issues can be bought for as low as 99c. Think of it as iTunes for sequential art. Hoseley has the right idea, and seems to know what he’s doing;

If there’s not the ability to have a very similar experience to what they would have going into a comic shop, then immediately it’s an inferior experience, not only in terms just purchasing comics whether print or digital, but also an inferior experience to other forms of digital retail like iTunes and downloadable content on WiiWare or X-Box Live. The idea of a secure, controlled distribution system that allows mass amount of content to come through in ways that modern consumers expect in terms of digital content, I think that’s a huge, huge part of it.
