Death of Spider-Man on iPhone and Print Simultaneously

Now this is big news. Like they did with Ultimate Thor #1, Marvel are releasing every ish of Spidey’s death to comic shops and digital stores at the same time. The press release is below, but fear not – this is the Ultimate version of Spider-Man that’s being killed (presumably temporarily) not the Spider-Man from the main Marvel Universe. This is good news for those who like reading their comics on a screen as much as paper, and for Marvel to choose such a high profile story for this move, obviously they believe in the future of their expanding digital customers.

Lots of Hot Toys in Tokyo

At Bleeding Cool, there’s a great post about Hot Toys’ 10th anniversary exhibition in Tokyo. Well, it’s more a series of impressive photos and videos from the show, but is definitely worth a look to see some great likenesses of Stallone and Arnie, plus a horde of Michael Jackson Thriller zombies attacking some Resident Evil characters. Plus there’s detailed figures from Tron, Ghost Rider, Assassin’s Creed, Platoon, Batman, some funky Iron Man mods, Indiana Jones, 20th Century Boys and many more. Have a gander and be amazed at the fine work on display.

Sherwood Pictures’ Courageous

Film news site Dark Horizons have been running a very useful series of posts about next year’s intriguing films, running through every genre you can think of. The 3rd entry is focused on titles beginning with C and apart from the obvious choices like Conan and Cowboys and Aliens, I was pleasantly surprised to see this:

Courageous
Opens: September 30th 2011
Cast: Alex Kendrick, Kevin Downes, Ben Davies, Matt Hardwick, Ken Bevel
Director: Alex Kendrick

Summary: Four men, one calling: To serve and protect. As law enforcement officers, they face danger every day. Yet when tragedy strikes close to home, these fathers are left wrestling with their hopes, their fears, and their faith. From this struggle will come a decision that changes all of their lives.

Analysis: When it comes to business models, Sherwood Pictures has one many film companies would envy. A production company outlet owned by a Georgia-based Baptist Church, Sherwood produces low budget independent features about various subjects with strong Christian moral messages. It then uses mostly word of mouth marketing amongst churches and faith-based organisations to garner support to help promote and distribute the film.

Scoff all you like, Hollywood certainly did at first. Then in 2006, their football drama feature “Facing the Giants” hauled in a solid $10 million from a budget of only $10,000. Two years later, the fireman & marriage-themed drama “Fireproof” started out with a more serious budget ($500,000) and managed to outpace quite a few studio titles in the quiet early Fall period of that year, hauling in an impressive total of $33.5 million. That got a lot of attention, so much so that reportedly around 170 media outlets visited the set of their new film.

This fourth feature is an exploration of father/son relationships against the backdrop of the police force. With a bigger budget of just over $1 million, a stronger rating (PG-13 rather than the usual PG for these films), and use of the Red One camera to give the film much higher production values than the previous ones, the obvious aim is to deliver a feature that will not just energise the faithful but potentially crossover and reach a mass audience. It’s doubtful this will be that film, but as Sherwood have demonstrated before – one shouldn’t underestimate them.

I must admit that of the 3 films this faithful and resourceful church have made so far, I’ve only see their 2nd one, Facing The Giants, which really was their breakthrough. It’s a great emotional and spiritual film, helped greatly by the uplifting extras on the DVD too. If you haven’t already, go watch it, as it deserves more recognition than simply being seen as a “Christian movie.”

I’m looking forward to Courageous, and as someone who’s made a few short films in my day, and who firmly believes in God’s creativity as a gift, this will be on my must see list.

Find out more about Courageous here and the fine folks at Sherwood Pictures here. The film opens on September 30 next year.

Transmetropolitan Art Book on Kickstarter

Yep, an official art book with the thumbs up, and participation, from the creators of the Vertigo series, Warren Ellis and Darick Robertson. Some avid fans have set up the art book goal on project funding website Kickstarter and have some impressive names lined up as artists, such as Joe Benitez, Dan Brereton, Sam Kieth, Jeff Lemire and many more.

The pledging will end on Valentine’s Day next year (that’s February 14) and so far they’ve raised almost half of their $26, 000 goal to print a few thousand copies of the hard bound book. Get more info here.

Mice Templar Vol. 3 #1 Review

Up at Broken Frontier is my review of this week’s new issue of Mice Templar by Bryan J.L. Glass and Mike Avon Oeming. In summary – it’s great!

Christmas Comics Rundown

Yes, we talked about our favourite Christmas related comics in our most recent Extra Sequential podcast. Now, here’s a few more Christmas comics news items of note from the last few days.

Jim McCann, writer of the excellent Archaia OGN Return of the Dapper Men and Hawkeye: Blindspot is writing A Zombie Christmas Carol, set to be released next year. All that’s released so far is this great image.

Here’s a great Christmas post of CBR’s The Line It Is Drawn series in which fans mash up comic book characters around a theme. See the X-Babies and the Batman, Inc. office Christmas party here.

Four funky holiday art pieces at Top Shelf’s blog.

Comics Alliance has an amusingly inaccurate nativity re-enactment starring some confused kids, Spider-Man and Frankenstein, as well as the whole first issue of Image’s upcoming Santa Claus vs The Martians for free, and a hilarious look at a classic Christmas episode of Walker, Texas Ranger starring some evil Santas.

Finally, courtesy of DC’s blog, here’s a great page from artist Mike Ploog, from the back-up tale in The Spirit #9.

Thanks to everyone who read my little blog over the last year (and more), to those who listened to my new Extra Sequential podcast and read my reviews and interviews at Broken Frontier. Have a great Christmas and New Year!

Extra Sequential Episode Twenty One

35 mins. No news, and no what we’ve been reading. It’s our most streamlined, aerodynamic episode yet, and it’s all about Christmas themed comics. Also, singing cats, Angelina Jolie’s tattoos, Under Siege and a dodgy Christopher Walken impersonation.

LISTEN TO IT BELOW, DOWNLOAD IT HERE, ON ITUNES OR MIXCLOUD.

Fables #56 in which Santa Claus is a natural fit, and he explains just how he visits kids the world over all in one night!

1980’s DC Super Star Holiday Special. Large format, 5 stories.

Vertigo’s 3 issue Winter’s Edge mini-series. Now re-printed!

JLA #60 which shows Plastic Man recounting a tale in which Santa Claus joins the Justice League.

The classic Lobo Paramilitary Christmas Special. Poor, poor Santa. And yes, there was a two issue Lobo/The Mask cross-over a decade ago.

The Tick Big Yule Log Special from 1997. Spoooon!

Batman Returns. Yes, it’s a festive superhero film, with lots of snow, nose biting and awkward speeches.

Dear Dracula. It’s a kids’ book showing young Sam writing to his hero Dracula instead of Santa. From Silverline Books.

Top Cow’s Echoes Trailer

This disturbingly effective (though perhaps a tad too long) live action trailer for new series Echoes works very well. The first issue is released on December 29 and is from writer Joshua Hale Fialkov (the awesome Tumor) with art from Rahsan Ekedal.

This winter, Alibi and Cyblade writer Joshua Hale Fialkov brings you the most challenging tale of murder and mystery for 2011 with the five part series Echoes. With the haunting art of Rahsan Ekedal, you will question what it means to be insane and what evil lurks behind the smiles of your loved ones.

Can we truly escape our family legacy… or is it possible to inherit murder?

7 page preview of the first issue here.

Third Marvel vs Capcom 3 Trailer

The game arrives on PS3 and Xbox 360 next year, and here’s the latest trailer featuring Hulk, Magneto, X-23, M.O.D.O.K , and some Capcom characters.

Starstruck Audio Drama Review

I must confess I’m not an avid listener of audio dramas. I did, however, listen to 2 BBC CDs from the ’90s focused on the KnightFall saga in which Batman broke his back and The Death of Superman. Those two epics helped cement my love of comics in my 20s and I’ll always have fond memories of them. I can’t say the same about the audio dramas. Both are 3 CD sets and were as equally cheesy and disappointing as each other. In some parts they were just embarassing, but perhaps for someone who isn’t as much a fanboy, they could really appreciate it. What I’ve heard of GraphicAudio’s dramatisations of DC’s 52 and Infinite Crisis series sounds much more intriguing.

Now, onto Starstruck, the latest audio drama I played on my daily commute over a few days. I’ll admit I’ve never heard of the original comic that this is based on, but I was curious nonetheless.

The press release explains the unique project it better than I can, so here goes.

Elaine Lee and Michael Kaluta’s science fiction comedy masterpiece comes to the world of radio drama as The AudioComics Company announces their debut full-cast audio production of Starstruck on compact disc and pay-per-MP3 download; the show will also air on selected radio stations throughout the United States, beginning with WMPG FM in Portland, ME. The recording of the play that became the critically-acclaimed independent comic book series comes just after the completion of the re-mastered 13-issue Starstruck comic series from IDW Publishing, which will be available as a 360 page hardcover collection in February of 2011.

Produced by The AudioComics Company in association with Portland Community Radio WMPG, the audio adaptation of the original off-Broadway production was adapted for the medium of audio by co-creator Elaine Lee, and directed by AudioComics Company co-founder William Dufris. (Bill is best known to audiences as the voice of “Bob the Builder.”) The recording also employs composer Dwight Dixon’s re-recorded music from the original 1980’s stage productions, as well as several new compositions.

Set many years after the events of the comic book series, Captain Galatia 9 and the crew of the Harpy are on a mission for the United Federation of Female Freedom Fighters. When the Harpy runs into a living ship inhabited by a team of galactic evildoers, including Galatia ’s insidious sister Verloona Ti, the outcome of the battle may well decide the fate of the free universe!

I wouldn’t describe it as a comedic masterpiece, but I have to say, I’m very tempted to get IDW’s Feb-releasing hard cover collection, or the TPB that was released in September with new colours by Lee Moyer and art b the talented Michael Kaluta. I think not being familiar with Starstruck had me at a disadvantage, as there were no visual descriptions and as I listened to mp3 without any CD case, I had no idea what any of the characters looked like. To me, they were just disembodied voices speaking into my ears, though the occasional exposition and brief character history from the authoritarian English narrator does work well and appears naturally through the course of the madcap story.

The voice acting is well and never veers into pantomime overacting. A pleasure droid who sounds like Marilyn Monroe, a tough talking ex-nun, an evil woman who reminds me of Futurama’s Mom, etc. It’s pretty impressive how much just a voice can conjure up a character and even with a somewhat large cast, it never gets confusing as to which character is speaking.

As it’s a sci-fi comedy, there’s some wild ideas (a spaceship blob made from Galactic Girl Guides), authentic sound effects and made up technical words and alien races and the story is easy to follow, if perhaps a little longer than necessary. Although it’s not outrageously hilarious, I did chuckle out loud more than a few times, and the flashbacks, witty dialogue and comedic timing, plus the deadpan delivery of the narrator all add up to something with its own charm.

There is some profanity littered throughout the 2 Acts, but it does have a child like sense of fun, almost at times veering to the levels of Batman on TV in the ’60s. Definitely for fans of similar sci-fi craziness like Red Dwarf and Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Starstruck is available from The AudioComics Company as a two-disc CD set and pay-per-MP3 download through CD Baby, ZBS.org. and The AudioComics website. Downloads are available through iTunes and Amazon MP3 too.

BTW, here’s IDW’s enticing description of their TPB.

STARSTRUCK HC

Elaine Lee (w) Michael Kaluta (a & c)

The classic, galactic-spanning saga of Starstruck, the renowned stage play/radio drama/heady science fiction classic, continues! Collecting all 13 issues of the completely remastered Starstruck series by Elaine Lee and Michael Wm. Kaluta. 280 pages of Starstruck and Galactic Girl Guides adventures, covers, pin-ups, glossary, postcards, and so much more! The first truly comprehensive collection of this material in a grand, over-sized hardcover edition. This beautiful book features some of the finest art ever by put to paper by Kaluta, including many pages that were never printed in the original run. Additionally, Kaluta painstakingly added approximately 20% of art to NEARLY EVERY PAGE to ensure the aspect ratio of the comic would be consistent and correct. The end result is unlike anything you’ve ever experienced, a head-spinning, synapse-snapping, soul-searing ride to a world like no other… the world of Starstruck.
