Update on The Lost Room Comic

Publisher Red 5 have been getting a lot of enquiries from fans of The Lost Room TV mini-series comic that was announced a while ago, and you can read what’s happening with it right here. In short, creators of the show Christopher Leone and Laura Harkcom, along with Paul Workman have created the story for #1 and the hunt is now on for a suitable artist.

The series is expected to launch this year.

Comics Games Galore

It’s a good week for comics inspired games, with the release of Marvel vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds. I’ve never been a huge fighting game fan, but the roster of characters is impressive, as are the special moves. Deadpool, for example, uses his own health bar as a weapon in his typical, fourth wall breaking style. On March 1 you can also download alternate costumes, including classic Thor, Iron Patriot (Norman Osborn in stolen Iron Man armour) and Steve Rogers.

Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters has its first trailer, although curiously it shows a cinematic, not any actual gameplay. Hmmm. It’ set to be released on June 1, the same day as its movie counterpart. It’s also the first time any Green Lantern has had their own game.

Much more promising is the sequel to Batman: Arkham Asylum, the best game the Dark Knight has ever had. Arkham City is made by Warner Bros. Interactive and Rocksteady Games and features Batman (obviously) as well as Joker (who doesn’t look too well), Harley Quinn, Hugo Strange and more. Check out 3 more pics of the upcoming game here.

Finally, Captain America’s movie tie-in game is set in WWII and is made by Sega. The pics (more here) look great although the footage shown at New York Comic Con last year shows the classic winged ear costume, but that could be an alternate costume, or perhaps it’s only used early in the game. Actor Chris Evans has only just signed on to voice Cap for the game, so it’s not his voice you hear in the video below.

Astonishing X-Men

When this series launched with Joss Whedon and John Cassaday, fans lapped it up, and the motion comic based on those issues is great too. Now the title is getting a bit of a shake-up. In the pic below though, it looks like Beast is getting ready for the Super Bowl.

This spring, Astonishing X-Men takes a dramatic twist as two amazing pairs of creators team-up for a astonishing crossover event—all in one series! The Amazing Spider-Man Film

The wall crawler’s reboot now has an official title, in The Amazing Spider-Man. Makes sense to name it after Spidey’s longest running comic series. I suppose the sequels will be Spectacular and Sensational, or maybe even Web Of.

The photo below is apparently of actor Andrew Garfield in costume. The film opens in 3D on July 3 2012.

On to superheroes of the small screen now and Superboy will be making his debut on Smallville’s last season. That’s a surprising character to have appear on the show, considering the character, known as Conn0r Kent (a clone of Superman and Lex Luthor) didn’t appear in the comics until after Superman’s 1992 death.

On a more light hearted note, though not for Marvel and DC’s lawyers, here’s a video from the Indonesian made TV movie, Supergirl, starring an actress in a Spider-Woman costume. They could’ve just given the heroine a new name and costume, but I admire their boldness, if not their flying SFX.

100 New Avengers

As mentioned on Bleeding Cool, artist John Byrne obviously has a fondness for the Avengers of old and not the current incarnation, as seen by his entry in the New Avengers 100 Project (first pic below). Comics charity Hero Initiative have done a few of these to raise funds for creators in need, and this is the latest. 100 blank New Avengers covers with creative freedom given to artists and the opportunity for fans to buy them. You can see some of my faves below and the full gallery so far here.

Comics Alliance Is #1

Good on Comics Alliance for being the most visited comics related site in the US. I’ve only recently gotten to know their charms, but amongst the heap of comics sites out there, it’s always an entertaining stand out, as they don’t focus on reviews and interviews like most others.

At CA right now is the obligatory just released X-Men: First Class trailer, Neil Gaiman’s surprising support of internet piracy, a birthday ode to Bruce Timm and more.

Superman Punches Silver Screen

The last time the Man of Steel actually got into fisticuffs on film was in 1987’s Superman IV, which apart from the nuclear disarmament story had Christopher Reeve’s Superman battling Nuclear Man. What a disappointment that was.

So far, the best superhero fight – ever – is in Superman II, with Supes up against 3 Kryptonians in the middle of Metropolis. It goes for something crazy like 14 minutes, has great moments all in an era of pre-CGI, including bus throwing and billboard exploding, and awesome lines such as Superman’s “Care to step outside, general?” and Ursa remarking that that Kal-El’s weakness is that he cares for humans, “like pets.”

Thankfully Zack Snyder, the director of 300 and Watchmen, and the man behind the reboot lets SFX magazine in on a secret of sorts – that his Superman will be an action man. It’s expected, because that’s the kind of director he is, but it’s a relief to hear it.

And just how will Snyder’s Superman differ from previous incarnations of the character? The filmmaker’s tight-lipped but hints at what we can expect from someone whose visions are, more often than not, visceral.

“I can’t really talk about that without being kind of specific,” says Snyder. “But I can say I think Superman needs to be physical.”
