Thor: The Dark World Trailer

Ahead of tomorrow’s release of Iron Man 3 (here in Australia, anyway) comes the first trailer for the Thor sequel, reuniting the cast form the original, and with Doctor Who’s Christopher Eccleston as bad guy Malekith. I like the way the familiar Marvel logo becomes Thor’s cape, but I’m getting tired of seeing London destroyed again, after witnessing its destruction in G.I. Joe Retaliation, and the upcoming Star Trek sequel.

Just as Marvel’s “Thor: The Dark World” continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel’s “Thor” and “Marvels The Avengers,” Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.

The Mighty Thor #9 Preview

It’s good to see artist Pasqual Ferry back doing superhero work. His art on Superman a few years ago was great and now Thor gets his attention. Here’s atext-free preview of next month’s issue of Thor, which finds the blonde adventurer replaced by new hammer wielder Tanarus by the looks of things.

Your First Look At THE MIGHTY THOR #9!

God of Thunder and Avenger, Tanarus is Earth’s mightiest hero…or is he? Loki suspects his “brother” is not who he says he is and in your first look at The Mighty Thor #9 from the creative team of Matt Fraction & Pasqual Ferry, Loki is determined to find the truth! In a race against time, Loki must turn to Dr. Donald Blake for help while the All-Mothers go to battle against Asgardia’s insidious new enemy. See how it all goes down this December in The Mighty Thor #9!

Extra Sequential Podcast #27

63 mins. Another rambling, yet informative episode. We discuss a bunch of comics and film stuff, plus tedious fantasy movies, interstate travelling, water pistols and what Batman’s up to these days.

The upcoming Red Sonja film starring Amber Heard, Comic-Con 2011 is all sold out, the new Thor, Captain America, Cowboys & Aliens, and X-Men: First Class trailers, Lois Lane and Ursa in the Superman reboot, the most popular comics website, and the Dreams Come True Disney exhibit in Melbourne.

25:35 WHAT WE’VE BEEN READING

Weird zines such as Modern Gentlemen #3, and the far cuter Summer Tears#1, the disappointing Dinner for Schmucks film, Brightest Day #19, Thorgal by Jean van Hamme and Grzegorz Rosiński, the supporting cast spotlighting Superman 80 Page Giant 2011, Raymond Briggs’ nuclear drama When The Wind Blows, Batman and Robin #20 with the new creative team of Peter J. Tomasi and Patrick Gleason and finally Deus Ex: Human Revolution #1.

Comics Films Super Bowl Trailers

Below are trailers form today’s Super Bowl telecast in the States. The Thor one has some previously unseen footage, the Captain America is the first official non-photos we’ve seen and is the most exciting, even though Chris Evans’ head on a scrawny body looks a tad weird. Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford together in Cowboys & Aliens is an intriguing partnership, although, like the Thor trailer, it doesn’t show heaps of new footage.

If you want to see screenshots in these fast paced trailers go here for Thor and here for Cap.

The Mighty Thor by Fraction and Coipel

Thor is the man of the hour, or the year, and now has a new title. At least this series has promise, thanks to its creative team though. Here’s the skinny, and the two covers including a film focused one and an even better variant from artist Travis Charest. Artist Oliver Coipel helped relaunch Thor back in 2007 with a new series with writer J. Michael Straczynski, and Matt Fraction has been writing the current Thor series for a while. However that series will now be renamed Journey into Mystery, (by Kieron Gillen and Doug Braithwaite) the series that debuted Thor decades ago. Poor Thor. He’s getting shuffled around all over the place, just to make the most of becoming a movie star. Fair enough really. Find out more here.

Marvel Announces THE MIGHTY THOR By Fraction & Coipel

Prepare yourselves for a new Asgardian age with The Mighty Thor #1! In this all new ongoing series, from the superstar creative team of Matt Fraction and Olivier Coipel, Thor must defend his homeworld of Asgard from Galactus! When Thor and Sif retrieve an artifact from deep within the World Tree, nobody expected the Silver Surfer to show up. And where the Sentinel of the Spaceways travels, Galactus is sure to follow! It’s the World Eater vs. Asgard in the explosive opening arc that’s great for new readers! No fan can miss this monumental new series that will redefine what it means to be the Odinson!

“The God of Thunder ain’t never been mightier than now!” exclaims writer Matt Fraction. “Everything is going beyond-epic in The Mighty Thor and I couldn’t be more thrilled to have Olivier onboard for the book’s maiden voyage. Look up – think big – fight hard!”

“It’s a really exciting time to be working on Thor. A lot of things that have been developing over the last few months are about to come to fruition in a big way—and in a way that’s going to affect not only all of Asgard, but all of the Marvel U,” said Marvel Editor Charlie Beckerman. “With the release of Marvel Studios’ Thor this May, we wanted to be sure that we pulled out all the big guns. And I’m talking talent—Matt, Olivier, Mark and Laura—and I’m talking characters: I can’t say exactly who’s going to show up, but I will say that it will knock your socks clear off.”

The fate of the golden city of Asgard, the wonder of the nine realms, hangs in the balance and only Thor can ensure the survival of the Asgardians! What does the World Eater seek and what terrible outcome awaits the Mighty Avenger? Discover the answers you seek as Fraction and Coipel pull out all the stops in The Mighty Thor!

New Batman: Arkham City and Thor Trailers

Just shown at the Video Game Awards were a bunch of new trailers including Uncharted 3 and Resistance 3, but of most interest to us comics readers are brand new ones for two cool looking games that are both due out next year.

Obviously Batman looks much more intriguing.

First Thor Poster and Trailer

Yes, it’s pretty bland and the character’s name/film title is miniscule, but fans already know what the film version of Thor looks like. I’d expect the posters that are released closer to the May 6, 2011 release date to play up the fantasy angle and the Marvel angle. Really this one-sheet could be of any action movie, but as directed by Kenneth Branagh and tying in to the Iron Man/Avengers film continuity we know it won’t be.

The trailer has also just been released. Some of the footage has been seen in the Comic-Con footage form July this year, but it also shows Thor’s winged helmet, his hammer Mjolnir and the evil Destroyer in action. Oh, and it’s 3D too. Looks pretty awesome.

Graphic Gaffe: Thor #614 and X-Men #1

A new #1 for Marvel’s biggest franchise is something that’s sure to get attention, and scrutiny from the fanboy/girl fraternity. It’s a shame that the latest relaunch, which kicked off in July, suffered from two typos, as shown below. Excuse the photos due to lack of a scanner. Wolverine has had the “l” dropped from his name and Wolvie himself seems to suffer from a stutter.

A more recent release is Thor #614, the final issue before writer Matt Fraction and artist Pasqual Ferry take over next month. This gaffe seems to have stayed put during the entire production of its pages while being ignored or put in the “that job’s not mine” basket. A handwritten note reads “Scan of map of Asgard?” on an empty parchment. Good idea. Shame no-one actually made it happen.

Ultimate Comics Thor #1 Preview

Sure, the prevalence of Ultimates titles (initially introduced for a more streamilned approach to the Marvel Universe) makes things as daunting as their regular Universe counterparts, but they are still a line of some very entertaining comics. The latest is an intriguing mix of creators and may be writer Jonathan Hickman’s most accessible superhero series to date. Text-free preview below. Ultimate Comics Thor #1 goes on sale on October 6.

Thor Comic Con Trailer

Over 5 minutes long, this is the trailer for the next film in Marvel’s Avengers puzzle. It hasn’t been officially released just yet, but surely will be soon. Combing small town drama and romance with Lord of the Rings grand fantasy and superhero action, it looks pretty good. It’s directed by Kenneth Branagh and stars Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Hopkins and Natalie Portman. Check out the trailer right here.

On a related note, below is the first trailer for the new cartoon series set to air on the Disney XD channel called Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. It looks somewhat bland and set for an audience a lot younger than the film will be, but DC have always had better animated offerings than Marvel, and they don’t use dated theme songs either.
