MTV’s Spashpage site has a revealing look at next year’s Spidey film costume in action right here. Sleek, as it should be, it also has web-shooters and an air of acrobatic ability. The mask and feet may not be the final deal and could be used for stunt work though. It looks okay, but it does also make him look like an Olympic ice skater.
Two photos and the internet goes ablaze. Not surprising really. Captain America starring Chris Evans, and Hugo Weaving as the Red Skull opens on July 22. Below is the first good pic of Evans in costume from the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly. I like it. Like The Ultimates version, plus the more realistic versions that Marvel have been showing in their WWII era comics in the last couple of years, with the wings gone and more pouches. He looks like a patriotic soldier.
Also released today was the first official pic of next year’s Spider-Man reboot. Sure it’s 18 months early, but it’s a good way to start the buzz now. Here’s what I think about the new Spidey costume, as seen worn by actor Andrew Garfield (The Social Network).
1. It has to distance itself from the Sam Raimi/Tobey Maguire films. Sony don’t want people thinking this is Spider-Man 4, seeing as it will be released only 5 years after Spider-Man 3.
2. Gone is the raised silver webbing. I never understood that. I suppose perhaps it made sense from a lighting point of view, and on Venom in Spidey 3, but Peter Parker was supposed to have made the costume himself. In reality, each suit cost $100, 000. On the DVD of the first Spider-Man film from 2002 is a brief clip of some CGI test footage of Spidey climbing a wall. There’s no silver webbing on the costume, and it looks great. Why they dismissed that approach is due to Hollywood logic, but if you see the alternate Green Goblin costumes and wonder why they chose the laughable final version, it’s fitting I guess.
3. It distances itself from the Turn Off The Dark musical costume, which wisely Sony don’t want to be associated with.
4. It’s a subtle redesign from the original, and still used (mostly) comics one. Of course we don’t know what the mask looks like yet (or the boots), but at least this is sleeker and thus more given to acrobatic manoeuvres (especially as it’ll be in 3D). It has simple lines, almost motocross-styled gloves, slightly darker colours and spider emblem legs that go all the way through to his waist. Minor alterations and still recognisably Spidey.
5. Sony execs will surely be watching the internettery light up with comments, but it may be too late to change anything even if they wanted to.
6. Web shooters! Possibly, as shown here, there’s gold, metallic elements under his wrists. That is awesome. I never liked Raimi’s change from web shooters, made from Parker’s scientific skills, into the organic variety.
Hmmm…looks like something from the Spidey musical.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed centred on Darth Vader’s secret apprentice and was not a bad game, but what tipped it over the edge into mass frustration was the infamous Force gripping a Star Destroyer scene. Hopefully the makers have learned their mistake for the sequel, which is due on October 26. Go here for the just released cinematic from the game, which is a MUST SEE.
Spider-Man Shattered Dimensions features 4 alternate universe versions of the Web-slinger, including the one we know and love, the Old-school Noir version, the just announced and expected 2099 version from the ’90s comics and one more to be unveiled. It’s an interesting approach. The game is released on September 7.
Lastly, a new trailer for Marvel vs Capcom 3 shows some great footage such as Wolverine fighting Ryu and Chris Redfield facing off against Hulk, plus Iron Man, Deadpool and Dante. Fate of Two Worlds is released later in the year.

Marvel have handily connected all the dots, or rather, puzzle pieces from their last 4 teaser images hinting at what’s to come for Peter Parker this year. Hopefully it means a reunion with his wife Mary Jane Watson. Yay! Their separation/mind wipe in the One More Day storyline was a bad call, and hopefully Marvel are now convinced that a single Spider-Man doesn’t necessarily mean a greater audience for single readers who can identify with the character. Married men can have just as much fun, and that’s what Spidey’s all about.
It’s been a while since we’ve had any cryptic pics from Marvel, so here we go. The below pic came simply with the text, “The Year of Spider-Man is 2010.” So it appears that Peter Parker will have another big year next year. In the puzzling picture (from left to right) is Parker in his Iron Spider duds when he was briefly on Tony Stark’s side during the Civil War, the young female hero Arana, seldom seen aide Madame Web and of course, the symbiote costume. Whatever happens it appears as if it will be in the Amazing Spider-Man title.
and this new pic shows an unmasked Spidey, and it appears to be from artist Pasqual Ferry (Ender’s Game, Ultimate Fantastic Four).
I remember the Spidey cartoon from the 1990s. It was a good decade for comics related toons, with Batman: The Animated Series and the X-Men being faithful to their printed origins. Now the Spidey toon is available for free on Marvel’s web-site. Details below.

The issue is written by Mark Waid and also includes a 6 page story written by Brian Bendis with art by Joe Quesada. That’s special. I’m actually quite curious about this project. Spider-Man, as Marvel’s flagship character has the ultimate cross-over appeal, and Marvel are banking on that as he appears in his very own Broadway show next year, with music from Bono and The Edge from U2 and direction from the well respected Julie Taymor, who has read hundreds of comics in preparation. Click here for short, but revealing interviews with the 3 and hear how they brought Peter Parker and co. from the page to the stage, and go here to buy advance tickets by using the code 1MARVL.

I remember watching the dodgy old American Spider-Man live action TV show in my youth. Sure, Spidey never did any web swinging, or fought anyone other than plain baddies but it was fun for a wide-eyed kid to see one of his heroes in “real life.” Spider-Man also turned Japanese in the 70s, in even less faithful TV adventures. The only similarity was really the costume. The Japanese version had motorbikes and giant robots to make up for it though. See the official press release below, then check out the free TV shows. If the pics below don’t tempt you to glimpse the zaniness, nothing will!
Now streaming exclusively on Marvel.com is Japanese “Spider-Man,” the legendary late 1970s TV show produced by Japan ’s TOEI Company. Trust us; you have NEVER seen Spider-Man quite like this before.
The series follows the exploits of motorcycle racer turned super hero Takuya Yamashiro as he slings and swings, battling the evil Iron Cross Army along the way. It’s fun, frantic and FREE!
See Episode One right now on Marvel.com—then come back every Thursday for the next episode.
