Jim Lee Doesn’t Wear Socks

He also draws a mean Batman, as we all know. Below is a video posted by the artist and DC Co-Publisher himself sketching with his fingers on his iPad.

The man himself says:

This is a very sped up clip of me messing around on my iPad. Original video was 20 mins in length; it usually takes me about 60-80 mins to get one of these pieces done using @sketchbookpro. I prefer using my finger to a stylus of any sort–makes it more fun. I honestly have to say this piece was not going in the direction I wanted so I stopped and got back to real work : ) but you get a general sense of how I layer on colors and work positive and negative shapes back and forth to get edges…like in painting.

The Dark Knight Rises Fan Posters Collection

From a zombie Batman rising from the grave to Guy Pearce as The Riddler, this collection of 31 diverse fan made film posters for the third, and final, Christopher Nolan Batman film is certainly impressive. Check them all out at Buzzfeed right here. The film opens in July next year.

Comics Games Galore

It’s a good week for comics inspired games, with the release of Marvel vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds. I’ve never been a huge fighting game fan, but the roster of characters is impressive, as are the special moves. Deadpool, for example, uses his own health bar as a weapon in his typical, fourth wall breaking style. On March 1 you can also download alternate costumes, including classic Thor, Iron Patriot (Norman Osborn in stolen Iron Man armour) and Steve Rogers.

Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters has its first trailer, although curiously it shows a cinematic, not any actual gameplay. Hmmm. It’ set to be released on June 1, the same day as its movie counterpart. It’s also the first time any Green Lantern has had their own game.

Much more promising is the sequel to Batman: Arkham Asylum, the best game the Dark Knight has ever had. Arkham City is made by Warner Bros. Interactive and Rocksteady Games and features Batman (obviously) as well as Joker (who doesn’t look too well), Harley Quinn, Hugo Strange and more. Check out 3 more pics of the upcoming game here.

Finally, Captain America’s movie tie-in game is set in WWII and is made by Sega. The pics (more here) look great although the footage shown at New York Comic Con last year shows the classic winged ear costume, but that could be an alternate costume, or perhaps it’s only used early in the game. Actor Chris Evans has only just signed on to voice Cap for the game, so it’s not his voice you hear in the video below.

Extra Sequential Podcast #27

63 mins. Another rambling, yet informative episode. We discuss a bunch of comics and film stuff, plus tedious fantasy movies, interstate travelling, water pistols and what Batman’s up to these days.

The upcoming Red Sonja film starring Amber Heard, Comic-Con 2011 is all sold out, the new Thor, Captain America, Cowboys & Aliens, and X-Men: First Class trailers, Lois Lane and Ursa in the Superman reboot, the most popular comics website, and the Dreams Come True Disney exhibit in Melbourne.

25:35 WHAT WE’VE BEEN READING

Weird zines such as Modern Gentlemen #3, and the far cuter Summer Tears#1, the disappointing Dinner for Schmucks film, Brightest Day #19, Thorgal by Jean van Hamme and Grzegorz Rosiński, the supporting cast spotlighting Superman 80 Page Giant 2011, Raymond Briggs’ nuclear drama When The Wind Blows, Batman and Robin #20 with the new creative team of Peter J. Tomasi and Patrick Gleason and finally Deus Ex: Human Revolution #1.

Bane, Batmobiles and Black Swan

The internet’s a buzz with the recent casting of Anne Hathaway as Catwoman’s alter ego Selina Kyle and Tom Hardy as bad guy Bane, but most non-comics readers have no idea who Bane is. In fact my local newspaper called him Blane. Sounds like a magician. So, Empire have a handy guide to the bulky, back-breaking character right here. They also have a look at 11 Superhero Vehicles from films, including a few of Batman’s rides, and Wolverine’s motorcycle (huh?). Lastly Empire are allowing us music lovers to listen (not download) the entire soundtrack of ballet/dark drama Black Swan here from composer Clint Mansell.

Oh, and in case you haven’t seen them already here’s the first official pics from June’s ’60 set mutant prequel, X-Men: First Class.

Bane and Catwoman in Batman 3

So the dust of casting rumours has settled and now the facts can be revealed. Anne Hathaway is playing Selina Kyle and Tom Hardy is playing Bane in the third and final Batman film from Christopher Nolan, entitled The Dark Knight Rises. Both are interesting choices.

Hathaway has shown more light hearted humour in her roles rather than the darkness that the former prostitute and inconsistent flame of Bruce Wayne requires, but we don’t know what Nolan’s version of the femme feline fatale will be. The press release from Warner Bros. notes that she’s playing Selina Kyle, not Catwoman, so she may not leather up and grab her whip, but Aaron Eckhart was only ever credited as Harvey Dent, not Two Face in 2008’s The Dark Knight, so we could be in for a nice surprise when TDKR opens on July next year.

Tom Hardy starred in Nolan’s Inception (and as the bad Picard clone in Star Trek: Nemesis) and bulked up considerably for crime drama Bronson, so playing Bane is a good choice. Everyone expected Hardy to play doctor Hugo Strange, not Bane though, but I am curious to see what they do with the character who broke Batman’s back in the awesome KnightFall saga in the early ’90s. Bane is a master strategist and the most recent comics supervillain to show up in these films and is a pivotal one in Batman’s history, and it’ll be good for the Dark Knight to have a bad guy to match his strength and dedication on screen. More than just a forgotten character from the ’90s period, Bane has shown up as a multi-faceted character in Secret Six, showing honour and surprising concern for his fellow crims.

Being as this is the final film in this trilogy, it’ll be interesting to see Batman’s arc. Things left off in the last film with Batman taking the fall for Dent’s death and being labelled a rebel. Will Bruce now retire and marry Selina? Will Batman have his back broken by Bane? Or will Bane even replace Batman as Gotham’s law enforcer?

New Batman: Arkham City and Thor Trailers

Just shown at the Video Game Awards were a bunch of new trailers including Uncharted 3 and Resistance 3, but of most interest to us comics readers are brand new ones for two cool looking games that are both due out next year.

Obviously Batman looks much more intriguing.

Kevin Smith Talks Batman

Up now at CBR is an entertaining interview with director and occasional comics writer Kevin Smith about his somewhat controversial run on Batman with his Widening Gyre mini-series. I found the mini enjoying, although at times it became too casual for a Batman title, but Smith’s love of the character can’t be denied. He talks about his fave Bats tales, Batman’s bladder problems and more right here. It is Kevin Smith, so expect profanity.

Transformers 3 and Batman: Arkham City Teasers

The 2:30 long teaser for the third (and now Megan Fox-less) Transformers film has just been released. Apparently Soundwave is in it. Yay! The trailer doesn’t show much, apart from the 1969 moon landing and a probably ancient Transformer. I recall they used a similar NASA approach to the teaser for the first film.

Also, just been released is this teaser for the follow-up to the best comic video game ever, Batman: Arkham Asylum. Again, it doesn’t reveal a lot, apart from some brief Jason Bourne styled beatings. Both the TF film and Batman: Arkham City are out next year.

Una Nemo In Batman And Robin

OK, spoilers ahead, though if you haven’t read Batman and Robin #17 yet, you should. It’s been out for a week after all. Anyway, this is the first issue since writer Grant Morrison left to focus on the excellent Batman Incorporated. By Paul Cornell and Scott McDaniel it’s a return to fun, mystery and those intriguing and scary moments that the best Batman comics do so well. The last page, shown below, is the debut of a new villain, or villainess called Uno Nemo. Not related to Finding, I assume the name will mean something, but she has an interesting feature, or lack thereof. Where she keeps her brain, who knows? Maybe she’s an android. She does remind me of Dudley Soames, a crooked cop in Nightwing’s solo series back in the day who had has head twisted around 180 degrees by Blockbuster, survived, changed his name to Torque and went about his criminal business, with his head on the wrong way. Great stuff.

My bet is that the following three things will happen with this new character.

1. At some point she’ll say, “I need (something) like I need a hole in the head.”

2. Batman will deduce her plan and/or motivation and she’ll exclaim, “Ah, Batman, you see right through me.”

3. Robin will throw a small projectile at her face, and it will go right through the hole in her head.

Time will tell. Great bad girl though.

Pivotal Batman Dates

Tony Brownfield at Newsarama has written an informative and concise timeline for Batman from his first appearance in 1939 until today, through comics, films and cartoons. Batfans will know most of it, but it’s definitely worth reading for newbies too, as it gives a rundown on Bruce Wayne’s rather hectic life.

Entry Level: November 2010

Hit the ground floor running with this selection covering a mass of genres for the discerning reader. If you’re tired of convoluted epics that make no sense to the newbie, these books will give you a good place to start, or add to, your graphic habit, whether they be the first issue of a new series, or a collection worthy of that lonely coffee table. Here’s a list of some of November’s best.

Tron: Betrayal GN

Marvel

There’s also a 2 issue movie adaptation, but I never really see the point in those, unless you want to see the film’s plot a month before it hits cinemas. Otherwise Betrayal is the way to go. Written by Jai Nitz, with art by Andie Tong, this 128 pager follows Sam Flynn and his cohorts as they strive to end Clu’s reign in the cyber realm.

Kull: The Hate Witch

Dark Horse

Perhaps Robert E. Howard’s most famous creation after Conan, Kull is a King in this new 4 ish mini-series by David Lapham  (Stray Bullets) and Gabriel Guzman (Predators). Sword and sorcery adventure.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Tales

Dark Horse

One of TV’s best shows, Buffy has created many new followers in comics form, as the official continuation of the telly hit. This TPB collects a variety of one-shots and complete mini-series from Buffy creator Joss Whedon, actor Amber Benson, TV scribe Jane Espenson and more, with art by Andy Owens, Steve Lieber and others.

Spider-Girl #1

Marvel

In her fancy new duds teenager Arana Corazon is the new Spider-Girl, as brought to you by Paul Tobin and Clayton Henry. 40 pages with an extra 8 page back-up tale.

Chaos War: Chaos King #1

Marvel

This is a tie-in to Marvel’s latest multi-title epic, but is worth a look due to the return of acclaimed fantasy artist Michael Kaluta to mainstream comics. The story is about the gods of Silver Surfer’s homeworld and their protection of Erath from the titular King.

Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #150

Marvel

I’m not an avid follower of Marvel’s more streamlined Ultimates line of titles, but this anniversary issue (as well as the 10th anniversary of the Ultimate line) looks to be a winner. Original architect Brian Michael Bendis is on board, as are a whole swag of artists such as David LaFuente, Skottie Young, Jamie McKelvie and more. It also includes a reprint of Ultimate Spider-Man Super Special #1 and features guest appearances by Iceman, Thing, Kitty Pryde and more.

Axe Cop Vol. 1

Dark Horse

The internet hit comes to the printed page. 120 black and white pages of zany adventures. 5 year old Malachai Nicolle writes and older brother/cartoonist Ethan draws. Crazy, but it works wonderfully.

Street Fighter Legends: Ibuki TPB

Udon Entertainment

From writer Jim Zubkavich (Skullkickers) and with the frenetic art of Omar Dogan comes this collection of the 4 ish mini-series focused on Japanese high schooler/ninja Ibuki. Light hearted action and drama.

Batman, Inc. #1

DC Comics

Grant Morrison and Yanick Paquette launch a new title starring the original Batman Bruce Wayne as he travels the globe for new soldiers in his crusade.

Halcyon #1 (formerly called Utopian)

Image Comics

Marc Guggenheim, Tara Butters, Ryan Bodenheim and Mark Englert bring a great looking and ambitious series which asks what happens after the superheroes of the world win and now face a crime-free world.

G.I. Joe: Future Noir Special #1

IDW

A new 2 ish mini by Andy Schmidt and Giacomo Bevilacqua with an anime influenced style. Starring Duke and Scarlett against the COBRA cult. 56 pages!
