The Spectre Preview

Below is the press release and a few snazzy pics from the first short film in the series of great DC animated films. The Spectre will be an extra in the highly anticipated Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths film out on Feb 23.

From the creative forces behind the DC Universe animated original PG-13 movies, DC Showcase puts the spotlight on favorite characters from throughout the annals of DC Comics in fascinating, short-form tales sure to entertain longtime and new fans alike.

The Spectre focuses on a detective story with an ethereal twist, featuring the otherworldly character originally introduced by DC Comics in 1940. The short is written by Steve Niles (30 Days of Night) and directed by Joaquim Dos Santos (G.I Joe: Resolute). The voice cast is led by Gary Cole (Entourage) as the title character and Alyssa Milano (Charmed) as Aimee Brenner. The Spectre will be distributed February 23 by Warner Home Video as part of the Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths Blu-ray/DVD. DC Showcase is a co-production from Warner Premiere, Warner Bros. Animation, Warner Home Video and DC Comics. Bruce Timm is Executive Producer. Future DC Showcase titles include Jonah Hex (written by Joe Lansdale).

Iron Man’s New Armour

Tony Stark’s had more suits of hi-tech armour than I’ve had hot dinners. He’s had his current one for a while though, so it’s time for another update. Looks pretty spiffy I gotta say. Details from Marvel below.

Marvel Unleashes Iron Man’s New Armor

Marvel is proud to unveil a new look for Iron Man, signaling a new era for Tony Stark and the Marvel Universe! From the minds of Eisner Award-winning series writer Matt Fraction and Ryan Meinerding, designer on the Iron Man and Thor films, comes the most bleeding edge, out of this world armor you’ve ever seen! Following the sold-out “Stark Disassembled” storyline, the Marvel Universe still needs its armored champion and a new mission requires a new kind of armor! But when you see just what Iron Man has planned for the Marvel Universe, your jaw will be on the floor! There’s never been a super hero like the new Iron Man!

“The inspiration for the new design came from thinking about a sleeker, leaner, tougher Iron Man,” revealed Fraction. “If technology is increasingly getting smaller and lighter it seems like the Iron Man should do the same: ergonomic and aerodynamic. We were looking for something that felt as sleek and glossy as a sports car Tony Stark would covet.  I love what we’ve come up with. It feels like the next evolutionary step in the Iron Man’s design.”

A bold new direction for Iron Man starts here with the perfect jumping on point for readers old and new alike, as the all-new Iron Man makes his debut in Invincible Iron Man #25, on-sale this April!

Plot Boiler

I happily stumbled upon this site which is both an amusing distraction and a cure for writer’s block. A very simple site that generates random plots from elements submitted by users. Keep hitting “Boil Another Plot” until inspiration hits or submit your own ideas. Here’s a nice example.

BOILED PLOT #44,126

A former submarine commander who has a jet-pack and a foul mouth, a cross-dresser who has a cape and a voice like chimes,
and a ventriloquist who has a wagon wheel suffer from a chronic disease and try to hold their family together in this gangster movie set in a Ferris wheel.

If you need even more, also check out the similar, but simplified site, They Fight Crime! Example:

He’s an obese coffee-fuelled jungle king who believes he can never love again. She’s a warm-hearted kleptomaniac research scientist who hides her beauty behind a pair of thick-framed spectacles. They fight crime!

Boom’s Disney Series Now Ongoing

Press release below from BOOM! Studios about their now ongoing Disney books. It’s great to see they’re not stopping, due to Disney’s purchase of Marvel.

Mickey, Donald, Goofy and more of your Disney favorites
return in two epic ongoing adventures series!

Enchantment and excitement are around every corner as two new Disney comics debut this January, WIZARDS OF MICKEY and DISNEY’S HERO SQUAD: ULTRAHEROES.

WIZARDS OF MICKEY #1 continues the epic tale of magical adventure that will finish its first arc in MICKEY MOUSE & FRIENDS issues #296 – #299. Popular enough to garner its own stand alone series, the WIZARDS OF MICKEY serial continues the adventures of Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy as they compete in the Grand Wizard’s tournament, determined to win all the pieces of the Sorcerer Supreme’s crown and free Mickey’s master from the clutches of the evil Phantom Blot!

With WIZARDS OF MICKEY spinning off into its own series, MICKEY MOUSE & FRIENDS takes a break with issue #299, while we prepare the next wave of amazing Mickey adventures.

DISNEY’S HERO SQUAD: ULTRAHEROES bursts from the pages of WALT DISNEY’S COMICS AND STORIES, where the first arc of the story is featured in WALT DISNEY’S COMICS AND STORIES #699 – #702. DISNEY’S HERO SQUAD: ULTRAHEROES follows Super Goof, The Duck Avenger, Eega Beeva, The Red Bat and more coming together as Disney’s mightiest band of heroes, ready to stomp out the bad guys wherever they may lurk!

With DISNEY’S HERO SQUAD spinning off into its own series, WALT DISNEY’S COMICS AND STORIES #703 will see the debut of a new serial entitled, “Mickey Mouse and The World to Come” by internationally renowned Disney writer and artist Casty.

“The fan response to WIZARDS OF MICKEY and DISNEY’S HERO SQUAD has been completely insane,” says BOOM! Disney Editor Aaron Sparrow. “These characters have reached a whole new audience, and fans, old and new, have clamored to have these stories in their own dedicated series. Well, you demanded it and we delivered. WIZARDS OF MICKEY & DISNEY’S HERO SQUAD will be their own series starting this January!”

WIZARDS OF MICKEY is an ongoing series written by Stefano Ambrosio, with delightful interior art by Lorenzo Pastrovicchio. Issue one ships with two covers in a 50/50 split, and a 1/10 incentive cover. The series features fantastic cover art by Magic Eye Studios and has a Diamond Code of NOV090699.

DISNEY’S HERO SQUAD: ULTRAHEROES is an ongoing series written by Riccardo Secchi, with amazing interior art by Stefano Turconi. Issue one ships with two covers in a 50/50 split, and a 1/10 incentive cover. The series features fantastic cover art by Magic Eye Studios and DWITT, and has a Diamond Code of NOV090686.

All BOOM! titles are serialized as individual 24-page comic books in Direct Market comic book collector shops and newsstands; then each four issue complete story will be collected into graphic novel trade paperbacks available in the mass market via Borders, Barnes & Noble and the direct market as well. Kable Distribution Services, Inc. distributes a BOOM! line of monthly publications to the newsstand market.

Smallville Season 9 Pic

Thanks to the Superman Homepage for the heads up on this: a new promo picture for Smallville Season 9’s Absolute Justice TV film, written by comics scribe Geoff Johns. It stars members of the JSA, including Dr. Fate, Stargirl and Hawkman as pictured and airs next month in America.

Complete Spider-Man 2010 Image

Marvel have handily connected all the dots, or rather, puzzle pieces from their last 4 teaser images hinting at what’s to come for Peter Parker this year. Hopefully it means a reunion with his wife Mary Jane Watson. Yay! Their separation/mind wipe in the One More Day storyline was a bad call, and hopefully Marvel are now convinced that a single Spider-Man doesn’t necessarily mean a greater audience for single readers who can identify with the character. Married men can have just as much fun, and that’s what Spidey’s all about.

2009’s Best Covers

Comic Book Resources have chosen their best comic book covers of last year, with brief explanations of each pick. It’s an eclectic mix. I don’t think I’d choose most of the covers featured but it’s a reminder that there’s some great art on the shelves.

Arcana #2 Begins

Back at work tomorrow in my regular day job as an admin assistant. The 2 weeks off has just flown by, but I did manage to get a lot of writing done for Broken Frontier, started turning the cogs for Arcana #2, and most importantly finished the final edit for Arcana #1, which will debut at your LCS (if they ordered any) at the end of this month. 2009 has been a great year. It was about this time last year that Dave (below) and I launched the 1st issue of our free on-line mag Extra Sequential, which created the opportunity for this new print endeavour thanks to Arcana Comics. You can check out all 3 issues of ES, plus a preview of this month’s Arcana #1 right here.

You might have noticed that I’ve changed my banner at the top of this humble blog. Since I started this about 18 months ago, I had a picture of Daredevil and Wolverine, but figured I’d start 2010 with something more in keeping with the name of this blog.

Sequart’s X-Men Documentary

It looks like the team at Sequart and Respect Films have been busy. Their Grant Morrison doco is released this year and I’m looking forward to it. It’s quite the coup really. Their web series The Third Age looks great, and I really should get around to watching more episodes. They also have an upcoming feature on a few legendary X-Men creators. This is how it’s described:

Also in association with Sequart, Respect Films is producing a documentary history of the X-Men comics franchise, from its origins in the 60s to its rise to popularity in the 70s and 80s, ending with recent reinventions by Joss Whedon and Grant Morrison. The documentary will feature exclusive interviews with many of the series’ most important creators, including a roundtable reuniting writers Chris Claremont, Louise Simonson and editor Ann Nocenti. Former Marvel Editor-in-Chief Jim Shooter, Art Adams and comics historian/Marvel Archivist Peter Sanderson will also appear. This project is being shot over the course of 2009, and will be released in 2010.
