“100,000 votes in just 11 days!” exclaimed Atom! Freeman, Top Cow Director of Sales & Marketing. “If the candidates I voted for in the last general election had worked as hard as our cadre of creators in getting out the vote, I wouldn’t have cried quite so much last Tuesday.”

Atomic Robo Volume 5 #1 Review

I remember when Red 5 debuted, as I was writing for the unique website/magazine Infuze at the time. Sadly that site is no longer around, but Red 5, and their flagship character Atomic Robo thankfully still are.

The regular partnership of writer Brian Clevinger and artist Scott Wegener once more provide readers with another instalment of zany fun that anyone can ease into. The beauty of Robo’s format of multiple mini-series (this is the fifth volume) means that there’s no prior knowledge required. Every mini-series and individual issue is self-contained. If you feel like comical comics, then just pick up any ish of Robo you see and satisfaction will be guaranteed.

This debut issue of a new series, titled Deadly Art of Science opens in Chicago, and later New York, in 1930, when Atomic Robo (creation of famed scientist Nikola Tesla) is new to the world and the adventures that can be had within it. Before we see Robo, who’s getting bored with Tesla’s experiments, we are introduced to Jack Tarot, Gunfighter and his daughter Nightingale, who is kind of a low-tech Oracle, offering assistance and guidance to Tarot in the midst of a car chase against some gangsters.

Tarot is a man’s man; a no-nonsense hero with a red mask/handkerchief (a maskerchief perhaps?) and a sense of style and the kind of derring-do that gets things done, and usually results in dead bad guys, much to his daughter’s frustration.

It’s great to see Robo as a curious wannabe adventurer, as all previous mini-series have largely shown an established and confident Robo. He’s still confident (and witty) here too, but is also slightly overawed by all the gunplay going on around him. He sees the daring life of Tarot (stuck on a bad guy’s windshield as he zooms past a street sweeping Robo) and wants in. After some relentless curiosity, Robo follows Tarot, who sees the metal man as nothing more than an annoyance. Teaming the slightly madcap Robo with a seasoned hero is a masterstroke filled with buddy cop potential. It’s like Indiana Jones teaming up with Spider-Man. Sort of.

Clevinger’s fast paced script and Wegener’s tight and expressive pencils define the word, “romp,” and it’s no surprise that both men have been noticed by the big boys. Clevinger is now writing Avengers and the Infinity Gauntlet, a rather humorous take on the classic cosmic storyline from Marvel. Clevinger has also done some recent work for the publisher on titles such as Punisher War Journal. The pair really do work well together, with this great mix of action and comedy. Of course, both of those things are reliant on timing and expression and here, like in every other Atomic Robo series, these two guys know what they’re doing when it comes to that, which means every page is just a joy to devour.

This first issue of a 5 issue mini-series is available now.

Artist Proposes In Comic

This is too, dare I say it…cute, not to share and thanks to Bleeding Cool for letting us jaded geeks know about it. You can see the whole sequence there or at artist Leigh Gallagher’s blog, where it has over 100 comments and counting.

Basically 2000AD and Bionicle artist Gallagher proposed to his girlfriend Niki in a funny, heartfelt and very awesome series of panels. Here’s a sneak peek. You can see the rest at the links above. Oh, and she said yes.

Batman Live

In 3 days, tickets for a new stage show called Batman Live: World Arena Tour go on sale. It’s written by comics and cartoon scribe Alan Burnett and is described like this:

For the first time in DC Comics history, see Batman the world’s most popular DC Super Hero as you’ve never seen him before, in an all-new, live-action arena adventure, set to take the world by storm. Premiering in the UK in Summer 2011,Batman Live – World Arena Tour is a multi-million pound stage production of unprecedented scale and a must-see for families and Batman fans everywhere.

Based on an original story being created exclusively for the show, BATMAN LIVE is a theatrical extravaganza of thrilling stunts, acrobatic acts and illusions. Never before has Gotham City, Wayne Manor, the Batcave and Arkham Asylum been brought to life on stage in a more visually exciting way. Join Batman and Robin as they battle their nemesis The Joker and other super-villains such as The Riddler, Catwoman, The Penguin, Two-Face and Harley Quinn, set on destroying Gotham City.

Totally authentic, bold and awe-inspiring, BATMAN LIVE will be a completely new way to experience the world of Batman. This is one adventure you do not want to miss!

Seeing as the Spider-Man Broadway musical has been delayed again (this time until January) this will be a good place to see live superheroes, but without the singing. I am curious, I must say.

New Sucker Punch Trailer

From the director of 300, Watchmen, and the new Superman attempt (oh, please make it awesome!) comes Sucker Punch. Zack Snyder’s film opens March next year and stars a bunch of girls in an insane asylum using their fanatsy worlds to escape and, of course, it looks rather dazzling.

Karl Urban On Judge Dredd Film

We briefly discussed the New Zealand actor’s upcoming portrayal of Britain’s best hero in our last podcast. Now, in this week’s Empire magazine (the Aussie version) Karl Urban talks about it too. It seems he’s been a fan of Judge Dredd since he was 15 when his pizza parlour boss introduced him to 2000AD’s best known character.

The 38 year old, like most of us, wasn’t impressed by Sylvester Stallone’s 1995 attempt at the hero, stating, “Dredd’s supposed to represent the faceless system of the law, so it’s imperative that his identity remains a mystery,” and that the new film will be gritty and urban. “Darkness is inherent in Alex Garland’s script. There are no gold codpieces here,” he says and that he’d, “better have an emotive chin.” So far it’s looking good, with an action man who loves the character (and will keep the helmet on!) and is produced and written by Alex Garland, writer of The Beach and Sunshine.

If you can’t wait till whenever the film comes out, check out updates on this awesome looking fan film, Judge Minty.

Eye Witness Collected Edition

Writer/artist Robert Luedke’s excellent Eye Witness series is now available as a complete collection, from next month. That’s good news. Official details below.

This November, just in time for the holiday shopping season, Head Press Publishing will release a limited edition slipcase collection of the award-winning Eye Witness graphic novel series.  This will offer many fans of Christian fiction their first exposure to all four books in this highly acclaimed indy graphic novel series, since publicity surrounding it has grown with each subsequent release and many fans came on board a few years after the 2004 premier of the first book in the series.

In an literary format that has largely been overlooked in the Christian marketplace, Luedke’s time-hopping Biblical based action-adventure story truly stands out from the crowd!  Through years of research, Luedke, has effectively (in a fictional sense) filled in the gaps in the Biblical narrative from the Passion week through the Book of Acts and combined it with a compelling and nail biting modern day action-thriller.  “The storyline combines elements of Indiana Jones, a gripping New Testament story, time travel, espionage and dramatic scenes that rank among the best in American comic artistry,” stated Journalist, David Crumm, on his Readthespirit.com, website.
Luedke made the commitment to begin the Eye Witness series in 2002, as a way to share the spiritual, historical and dramatic nature of the Gospels, in a way that would draw the attention of teens and young adults…especially those who may have never read a Bible or attended church, but loved reading comics and graphic novels.  “I intentionally designed Eye Witness’ unique mixture of Biblical adaptation and modern day thriller to make the story of the New Testament exciting, attractive and fun for today’s readers, “states Luedke.  “My goal was treat the Book of Acts like Cecil B. DeMille treated the book of Exodus in his Ten Commandments film…by adding characterization, dramatization and connecting the dots for those not familiar with the original narrative.”
The series has generated coverage by major media from coast to coast and the praise of many religious leaders as well as comic veterans alike.  According to Paige Patterson (President Southwest Baptist Seminary), “I do not believe I have ever seen anything like it. This is a great way to present the Gospel.”
Eye Witness (Book Three): Rise of the Apostle (which was released in August 2008) was awarded a gold medal in the category of graphic novels at the 2009 National Best Book Awards, sponsored annually by USABooknews.com and was named a finalist in the FOREWORD Magazine book of the year awards.
Eye Witness (Book Two): Acts of the Spirit (released, August 2006) was honored as the best comic/graphic novel at the 2007 Hollywood Book Festival.  The book also took a silver medal at the 2007 Independent Publisher Magazine Awards, as well as being named a finalist in the FOREWORD Magazine book of the year awards. The Eye Witness slipcase collection will be available through book and comic stores nationwide the week of November 15th (as well as most major retailer’s online stores).  There will be a limited edition of 200 sets signed and numbered by Luedke and only be available at his personal appearances and through the Head Press website.  For more information, visit: www.HeadPress.info
