Extra Sequential #4

It’s a long story. Actually, it’s not that long. Late in 2008 myself and Dave Lapsley, a mate from work decided to start an on-line magazine because we wanted a creative project to do together. Dave’s not a fanboy like me, but he does have an eye for good art and is a whiz with Adobe software.

We called the mag Extra Sequential and created our first issue mostly during our one hour lunch breaks from work. After 3 issues in 7 months, we helped an international comics publisher with the new mag they were launching. It was fun and a great opportunity. It did happen but in a different way than we expected.

Nevertheless we were happy we got those 3 issues out there and achieved Rising Star status on Issuu and over 17 000 subscribers on Scribd. We did look into self publishing, but working in a company facing downsizing meant it wasn’t a wise move.

We then received interest from another publisher and well, “circumstances beyond our control,” and all that, so 2 strikes was enough for us.

A lot has happened in the 18 months since we started the mag. Dave and no longer have the benefit of working at the same place, and we live 2 hours apart, so there won’t be any more issues of Extra Sequential. This is the last one, and it comes with a note: it ain’t perfect. Think of it as a Raw Edition. A collection of articles and interviews that were destined for print, some of these pages are unfinished, but not many. To be honest, our motivation to see this issue to its final version is pretty much non-existent, after a year of false starts into print. However, it’d be a shame to at least not put it online, so here it is.

Dave and I hope you enjoy it. Yes, some of the interviews are dated, but it’s certainly a nice way to say goodbye. We believe there’s still a place for an accessible, arty mag that reveals to the curious, and the dedicated reader, how awesome comics can be.

I still write for Broken Frontier and am a co-host of a new, weekly Extra Sequential podcast so I’m not, and probably never will be, out of the talking about comics “profession” though and I do recall fondly the hours and hours of creating Extra Sequential.

You can read our final issue below or here. Thanks for reading!

Entry Level: October 2010

Hit the ground floor running with this selection covering a mass of genres for the discerning reader. If you’re tired of convoluted epics that make no sense to the newbie, these books will give you a good place to start, or add to, your graphic habit, whether they be the first issue of a new series, or a collection worthy of that lonely coffee table. Here’s a list of some of October’s best.

GUY RITCHIE’S GAMEKEEPER

Dynamite Entertainment

256 pages of vengeance from the short-lived Virgin Comics, given a new audience thanks to Dynamite. This omnibus collects both volumes of the action packed story, as Brock foregoes the quiet life he’s known and puts murder in his sights once more. Along with film director Ritchie, other creators such as Andy Diggle, Jeff Parker and Mukesh Singh fill the pages with tense drama and bloodshed. An awesome movie just begging to be made.

BRUCE WAYNE-THE ROAD HOME…

DC Comics

So, Batman was “killed” a while ago in the pages of Final Crisis, with original Robin as his current replacement. However Bruce Wayne has been working his way through the timestream to get back to modern day Gotham. This month sees 8 one-shots focused on how various characters react to Batman’s resurrection, including Red Robin, Oracle, Catwoman and the Outsiders. Also out this month is Batman: The Return from the great duo of Grant Morrison and David Finch, and the debut of the 6 issue Knight & Squire, focused on England’s answer to the Dynamic Duo.

GUERILLAS: VOLUME 1

Oni Press

Brahm Revel’s black and white tale of simian soldiers in Vietnam. Yep, you may be taken back just like Private John Clayton is in this collection of the original 4 ish mini.

EMITOWN

Image Comics

400 pages of two-colour diary sketches from Emi Lenox.  The challenge to draw her daily life, whatever that may encompass, has garnered the artist many fans. You can check out her work for yourself at her blog (www.emitown.blogspot.com) or in this first collection of her quirky, humorous work.

BLACK WIDOW: DEADLY ORIGIN

Marvel

This Trade Paper Back collects the 4 issue mini-series from writer Paul Cornell and artists Tom Raney and John Paul Leon (who handles the flashbacks). Guest starring Daredevil, Hawkeye, and Bucky Barnes as the new Captain America, Russian spy Natalia Romanova must investigate the Icepick Protocol and her own past to survive. If you liked the glimpse of the character in Iron Man 2, as played by Scarlett Johansson, this is the best place to discover more.

ACME NOVELTY LIBRARY #20

Drawn and Quarterly

This Hard Cover is the latest installment from Chris Ware’s acclaimed series. Titled Lint, this issue offers a Rusty Brown story, and also focuses on the tale of family man and C.E.O Jordan Wellington Lint. Bold and diverse story telling at its finest.

NORTH 40

DC Comics/Wildstorm

Effectively creepy writing from Aaron Williams and delicate, yet dazzling art from Fiona Staples from their 6 issue mini-series is gathered here. Residents of a small town discover the weird happenings and monstrous forces that are being awakened within their county. Despite the recent closure of Wildstorm, hopefully their remaining TPBs will come out as promised.

Zack Snyder Directs Superman

Yay! This just in: the man who behind Watchmen and 300 will be helming Superman. We know Christopher Nolan who gave new life to Batman on the big screen is producing and the script is by his Batman Begins screenwriter David Goyer. These three men have proven their healthy respect for comics, and with Snyder now on board I’m a happy man. 300 ties with Sin City as the most direct and faithful adaptation of a comic ever put to screen, and though Superman has been around since 1938 and doesn’t benefit from one single, self-contained tale like those Frank Miller tales, Snyder is still a good man to trust with this long in development revival.

We know Brandon Routh who last palyed the Man of Steel in 2006’s abysmal Superman Returns won’t be..returning and that the villain will probably be Zod, as played by Terrence Stamp in the first two films starring Christopher Reeve decades ago, and Callum Blue in season nine of TV’s Smallville.

Snyder’s latest film is the owls-in-action Legend of the Guardians while next year sees his wild Sucker Punch unleashed.

The Punisher: In The Blood #1 Preview

As mentioned in our most recent podcast, Frank Castle has just waved goodbye to his man/monster status and is now returning to normal, ie, killing bad guys. Here’s a text-free preview of next month’s Punisher mini-series.

Your First Look At The RETURN OF THE PUNISHER!

Marvel is pleased to present your first look at Punisher: In The Blood #1 (of 5), from the acclaimed creative team of Rick Remender and Roland Boschi! The Punisher has returned to the Marvel Universe and he’s looking for payback! Criminals beware, with nothing left to lose, Marvel’s most feared vigilante has embarked on his most brutal campaign yet and the gutters are running red with the blood of the city’s scum. It isn’t pretty. But then again neither are the Jigsaw Brothers or their plans for Frank Castle.  Find out what happens when The Punisher brings his fight back to the streets this November in Punisher: In The Blood #1 (of 5).

Wonder Woman On TV?

The last time Wonder Woman was on the small screen was in the 1975-79 version with Lynda Carter as the twirling heroine. That series has proven instrumental in putting the original warrior princess in the minds of the general public. Much like the Batman series in the 1960s before Tim Burton’s 1989 film helped the Dark Knight, WW wouldn’t have  a public profile without it. More recently she’s starred in the animated Justice League and Justice League Unlimited cartoon and the animated film released last year.

Producer Joel Silver of The Matrix trilogy has been trying to make  a live action film for years, and at one point future The Avengers director Joss Whedon was lined up to helm it but his treatment was rejected by Warner Bros.

Now, a modern version (not a WWII set-series like the ’70s version originally was) is in the works. Warner Bros. Television is currently developing a series on the lasso wielding heroine with David E. Kelley. Yep, husband of Michelle Pfeiffer and creator of Ally McBeal and Boston Legal. It could work, even though action is not his forte, but we don’t know how much of a guiding hand he’ll have in the show just yet. Some news outlets have pointed out the fact that TV series with female leads rarely work, from Bionic Woman to Dollhouse, but sometimes do, like Buffy. Time will tell.

Facebook Creator Gets A Bio Comic

Bluewater’s timely biographical comics have run the gamut from politicians to entertainers to anyone who’s in the pop culture spotlight. Mark Zuckerberg falls into the latter category, especially with David Fincher’s film on the founding of Facebook, The Social Network opening late next month. Here’s the press release on Zuckerberg’s comic book tale.

“MARK ZUCKERBERG: CREATOR OF FACEBOOK” A DIFFERENT KIND OF COMIC BOOK BIOGRAPHY FROM BLUEWATER

In December, Bluewater Productions is publishing a biographical comic book called “Mark Zuckerberg: Creator of Facebook”, a 48 page giant sized issue priced at $6.99. Written by Jerome Maida and penciled by Sal Field, with cover art by Michal Szyksznian, it will be available from comic book stores and online retailers.

Who is the real Mark Zuckerberg? The answer, of course, is somewhere in between and Bluewater Productions is announcing it is filling that gap and exploring the background of the website’s founder in the medium of comic books.

The young billionaire and creator and CEO of Facebook who announced recently that he is generously donating $100 million to public schools in Newark? Or the cold-blooded businessman who walks over people to get what he wants – the way he is portrayed in the critically acclaimed movie “The Social Network”.

“This is a fascinating story” says Maida. “I enjoyed researching it because it’s extremely compelling. Think about it. Mark Zuckerberg is the youngest billionaire on the planet and created something that has already had a profound impact on the world. Yet hardly anyone knows much about him. It’s amazing.”

The road to success, Maida says, was not preordained nor was it always a smooth ride.

“Mark was offered loads of money at a young age and turned all his suitors down because deep down he knew he had higher goals than to work for someone else”, says Maida. “Bill Gates offered Mark a million dollars while Mark was still in high school to work for him and Mark turned it down. I mean, how many high school kids will ever be made an offer like that? Very few. And how many would have the confidence to turn it down and pursue their own path? Very few, if any. But that’s what Mark did.”

Of course, Mark wasn’t able to do everything on his own. He received help to various degrees and in different capacities from others. Many of these business relationships did not end well.

“Rightly or wrongly, Mark dealt harshly with some people on his way to where he is today”, says Maida. ” As we see, he left many people feeling betrayed. I try my best to be fair here. No one is totally innocent in this story. I try to represent each of the major players’ point of view.”

“Bluewater is looking to tell unique stories that are just not about celebrities”. Said publisher Darren G. Davis “The 1st biography one shot we are doing is about Father Yod and The Source Family and Mark Zukerberg will follow the next month. These books are not only good reading to get to know the subjects but are also being used as a tool in schools and libraries. ”

“Mark Zuckerberg: Creator of Facebook” will hit shelves in December but will be available to order at bookstores, comic stores or online at www.tfaw.com.

For more information, visit Bluewater online at www.bluewaterprod.com.
