Gail Simone Leaves Wonder Woman

In a wonderfully touching farewell letter, writer Gail Simone says her goodbyes and thank yous to all the faithful readers, and new fans who have joined her in her adventures with Princess Diana since she began in 2007. Simone will work on July’s landmark Wonder Woman #600 and will then make way for a new, as-yet-unnamed writer, who Simone is very excited about. She’ll also continue working on her excellent Secret Six series, and the relaunching Birds of Prey, which debuts on May 19, as well as a Welcome to Tranquility mini for DC/Wildstorm. So, she’ll be busy then.

Simone has always been a classy writer and though I haven’t read  a lot of her WW issues, I know her love for the character, and close relationships with the fans has helped to bring the title a credibility it hasn’t had in a long time. Her last issue as writer will be WW # 44 out on May 26.

And sticking with the female superhero theme, Wonder Woman and Secret Six writer Gail Simone has teamed up with comicbookresources.com to launch Wonder of Wonders, a new feature with guest contributors and a busy forum all dedicated to discussing the superhero alter geo of Diana Prince, Wonder Woman. Simone has a few interesting things to say about fans in the launch post, namely, if you’ve never read a comic of Spider-Man or Superman or whoever, but love the films and buy all the merchandise, can you still call yourself a fan? She says absolutely, but I’m not convinced. It’s a great read though, and an even greater idea, and BTW, the photo below is of cosplayer Margie Cox. Wow.

Secret Six’s Secrets

Secret Six #16I met artist Nicola Scott a few weeks ago at the Supanova convention in Perth. I complimented her on her work for Secret Six, DC’s villain-centric series. She thanked me and said it’s writer Gail Simone’s best work. She’s right. Now having two great female creators on a mainstream title is rare enough, but those two ladies are making magic. Secret Six is a spin-off of sorts of the Villains United mini-series, and the quirky cast has grown on fans. It’s a pleasant surprise that it works so well. I initially picked it up out of curiosity, but now it’s one of the few regular series in my pullbox. Over at Newsarama, is a great interview with Simone as she talks about the characters and its secret to success. It’s an insightful read and is filled with as much dark humour as the series itself. Just to prove the point, here’s a few of my favourite quotes from the interview. Out of context, they’re even funnier.

“I liken Secret Six to a beautiful, sunny morning, where you’re walking down the sidewalk eating a delicious, juicy peach, and all of a sudden you step in the carcass of a dead housecat.”

“That’s what those two represent, to me, sort of the proof of chaos theory in human form.”

“I have a well filled with the tears of children.”

“Where normal people talk, they tend to stab.”

If that taste isn’t enough for you, you can read the rest of the interview here.

Wonder Woman Sneak Peek

Wonder Woman #31, from DC Comics goes on sale this week. Diana battles Achilles, Zeus’ choice to replace her. The battle of the sexes is on. Written by Gail Simone (Secret Six), with art by Bernard Chang (not Aaron Lopresti despite what DC’s website says), this issue continues the Rise of the Olympian storyline.
