Brave and the Bold Season 1 and JL: War

Finally! There’s no mention of any special features, and putting B’wana Beast on the cover seems an odd choice, but one of the funnest and funniest animated shows of recent years is now on Blu-ray. Official details below.

Courtesy of Warner Archive comes the complete first season of “Batman: The Brave and the Bold” on Blu-ray this Tuesday, November 5. This 2-Disc, 26-Episode collection presents the series’ inaugural season in all its crisp and clear 1080p High Definition, as it was meant to be enjoyed.  A galaxy of Bat-tastic team-ups await as they face any peril including other heroes OUTRAGEOUSLY stealing the show in their relentless pursuit of justice. And fun.
Under the aegis of producer James Tucker, Batman: The Brave and the Bold” bravely challenged modern fan conceptions of The Dark Knight while boldly utilizing the richness of the entire DC Comics universe. The result is a sly and skillful blend of Dick Sprang’s Batman, TV’s timeless 1966 incarnation, Bruce Timm’s animated series and scores of others which creates a unique show that appeals to fans both new and old. Lead voice actor Diedrich Bader (The Drew Carey Show, Office Space) uses his crack comic skills to channel Kevin Conroy’s Caped Crusader, making his Bats the ultimate straight man in the world’s funnest cape cartoon. And he’s aided by a legion of vocal acting titans (and directed by legendary voice director Andrea Romano) that includes John DiMaggio (Aquaman), Paul Reubens (Bat-Mite), James Arnold Taylor (Green Arrow), Will Friedle (Blue Beetle), Tom Kenny (Plastic Man), Grey Delisle (Black Canary) and Neil Patrick Harris (The Music Meister).

In related DC Comics animated news, the trailer for the latest film, Justice League: War has been released. It’s based on the first few issues of the title’s relaunch in 2011, and features Wonder Woman in an unpleasing costume, and the first meeting of the JLA. It’s also the first animated film of the New 52 approach, but I hope we still get pre-New 52 films in the future. DC/Warner Bros. have a great success rate in their frequent animated films, and with all their bonus features, they serve as a great entryway to the DC Universe. Official details, trailer and box art below.
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will distribute JUSTICE LEAGUE: WAR as a Bu-ray Combo Pack, DVD and for Digital Download on February 4, 2013.When the powerful Darkseid and his massive, relentless forces invade Earth, a group of previously unaligned super heroes – misunderstood and, in some cases, hunted by the authorities – discover the only way to fend off the attack will be to work together as a cohesive unit. Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, Shazam and, in his origin story, Cyborg combine their respective talents in an all-out battle to save the planet. Based on the 2012 graphic novel, “JusticeLeague: Origin,” by Geoff Johns & Jim Lee, JUSTICE LEAGUE: WAR provides a glance into the world before the Justice League was created, and offers the initial animated incarnation of DC Entertainment’s “The New 52.”

Produced by Warner Bros. Animation and DC Entertainment, JUSTICE LEAGUE: WAR features the voices of Jason O’Mara (Vegas, Terra Nova), Christopher Gorham (Covert Affairs), Justin Kirk (Weeds), Alan Tudyk (Suburgatory), Serenity, Firefly), Michelle Monaghan (Mission Impossible III), Shemar Moore (Criminal Minds), Sean Astin (LOTR films), Bruce Thomas (Army of Darkness) and Steve Blum (Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox). Producer is James Tucker and director is Jay Oliva from a script by Heath Corson.

Necessary Evil Documentary Now Available

I must admit, my habit of buying many comics mainly from DC in my weekly shop hasn’t existed for sometime. However, I still do get Aquaman, Green Lantern, Injustice and the occasional Batman title, and Trade Paperback collection most weeks. Beyond the comics though, it’s a good time to be introduced to the massive universe of DC Comics, with the entertaining TV show Arrow (which I’m just getting into), the new Batman: Arkham Origins out now, plus the upcoming Man of Steel DVD and Blu-Ray. There’s also the Necessary Evil documentary which focuses on the supervillains of the DCU and has interviews with some great pop culture creators. Below is the official press release, and a clip, and look for Joker’s leering face near you!

“Necessary Evil: Super-Villains of DC Comics,” an all-new documentary produced by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and DC Entertainment, arrives on Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD today — Friday, October 25, 2013 — at a retailer near you.

Below you’ll find a link to an all-new official clip from the film featuring Kevin Conroy, the fan favorite voice of Batman; Zack Snyder, director of “Man of Steel”; and Dr. Andrea Letamendi, renowned geek psychologist; as well as the recognizable voice of ultimate villain Christopher Lee, who provides the narration for the documentary. The topic of the clip is whether or not villains are born bad.”Necessary Evil: Super-Villains of DC Comics” explores the thin line between right and wrong, the nature of evil and how super-villains can reflect society’s dark side as well as our own personal fears.  It also offers keen insight as to the reasons why comic book fans are so fascinated by the very characters they hope to see defeated. Featuring interviews with such luminaries as directors Richard Donner (Superman), Guillermo del Toro (Pacific Rim) and Zack Snyder (Man of Steel), the film focuses on DC Comics’ most terrifying villains, including The Joker, Lex Luthor, Bane, Black Adam, Black Manta, Catwoman, Darkseid, Deathstroke, Doomsday, General Zod, Sinestro, the Suicide Squad, and more.

Superman 74 Years Animation

I could watch this all day! To celebrate 75 years of Superman this year, animation legend Bruce Timm, and Man of Steel director Zack Snyder have teamed up for this excellent, two minute summary of Superman’s storied past, noting the major events and media portrayals over the years. It’s not on YouTube yet, but you can watch it here.

It kicks off with a bang with his first appearance on the cover of Action Comics #1 and ends (of course) lingering on the latest film version, with fights with classic enemies such as Doomsday (who killed him), Braniac and even the fight with Muhammad Ali, and many of the varied artistic styles which have graced Superman in those decades. This short will also be included in next month’s release of the Man of Steel on Blu-Ray.

Who Is Jake Ellis? Film

Talented writer Nathan Edmondson’s Who Is Jake Ellis? mini-series, which he created with artist Tonci Zonjic is becoming a film! That’s exciting news indeed. It was one of my fave comics of recent years, and definitely has big screen potential. Director David Yates is attached, who was behind four of the Harry Potter films.

Edmondson recently wrote the Splinter Cell comic that tied in with the new game, Blacklist, and promises on his blog that the remaining issues of the sequel, Where Is Jake Ellis? will be out soon. He also has two Marvel projects that will be announced at next week’s New York Comic Con.

Marvel Fact Files In Australia

The weekly publication that informs the curious about the Marvel Universe has been available in the UK for some time, and now it’s available in Australia, thanks to Eaglemoss Collections.

You can get a rundown of what it’s all about here, but it’s essentially a newbie’s guide to the characters and events of Marvel’s storied history. After reading the first issue, I can confidently say that it’s pretty good, in an educational, easy to read way, and will serve as a good introduction to what curious cinemagoers see of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The first issue is only $3, while future (of the planned 100) issues are $7 each. You can subscribe and get a few goodies, such as a calendar, t-shirt and 2 figurines. Each issue is 32 pages and features timelines, character summaries, timelines and heaps of cool art.

Gestalt Comics Documentary

Yay! An actual (and excellent – see my review here) about Australian comics publisher Gestalt is airing on mainstream TV. That’s a big deal! Here’s the official press release.

‘Comic Book Heroes’ documentary

Screening on ABC1 – Tuesday 13th & 20th August 2013 at 10.00PM

A two-part documentary series that tells the inside story of two ambitious Australian comic book creators and their battle to penetrate the American market.

Best friends Skye Walker Ogden and Wolfgang Bylsma are talented Australians with a crazy dream.

For eight years these Perth men have been producing mature, ground-breaking Australian comic books through their company Gestalt Publishing. They are publishing the likes of Academy-Award® Winner Shaun Tan and Aurealis-Award Winners Justin Randall and Tom Taylor, with other top-tier writers and artists from around the world clamouring to work with them.

But the guys are getting older and real life is confronting them with financial, emotional and health realities that they can no longer afford to ignore. With limited readership for graphic novels within Australia and no real profits in sight, they are now forced to grow the business fast. Their best bet is to travel 9,000 miles to the heart of the comic book industry – San Diego Comic-Con International in California. This annual comic convention presents an opportunity for the outsider Australians to showcase their wares to the 120,000 plus people that walk through its doors, as well as meet with reps from Hollywood, keen to snap up the rights for the next big graphic novel adaptation.

Along the way to the U.S. Bylsma and Ogden must navigate the tyranny of distance, logistical mix-ups, health breakdowns and financial stress. When they finally arrive at Comic-Con, they encounter thousands of costumed punters and many famous industry faces including film director Kevin Smith (‘Clerks’), 23-million Bestselling Sci-Fi Author Kevin J Anderson, a producer from ‘The Walking Dead’ TV series and the comic book master himself – Stan Lee. Will this trip to the States be the gamble that pays off for the struggling comic book publishers?

Comic Book Heroes tracks the joy and heartache of doing what you truly love. It follows these passionate mavericks and their talented team of artists and writers as they set out to take on the American comic book industry – Australian style.

Comic Book Heroes is Created, Written and Directed by Nicholas Dunlop. It is produced by Little Star and Wild Fury in association with Screenwest, Lottery West, Screen QLD and ABC TV.

Gestalt Publishing’s graphic novels are distributed by Madman in Australia and New Zealand.

Gestalt Comics Documentary

The talented team behind Western Australia’s Gestalt Comics have been going from strength to strength in the last few years. They may be a small outfit from Perth, but their ambition knows no bounds and the diversity of their goodies is most impressive. From the upcoming animated series based on The Deep, written by Injustice’s Tom Taylor, to working with noted novelist Kevin J. Anderson, Gestalt are the local (to me, anyway) guys done good.

Documentarian Nick Dunlop has seen the work they’re doing and is bringing their efforts to the small screen in a new documentary entitled Comic Book Heroes, which follows Gestalt founders Wolfgang Bylsma and Skye Ogden over two years, as they travel to the wonderful madness of San Diego Comic-Con, and generally experience the highs and lows of a small comics publisher making it on the international stage.

The doco screens on ABC1 here in Australia on Tuesday the 13th, as well as the 20th, of August at 10pm. Here you can see the tantalising trailer.

BOOM! Buys Archaia, Relaunches Site & Signs George Perez

BOOM! Studios surprised the industry two weeks ago by announcing they had purchased independent, and critically acclaimed publisher Archaia, which you can read more about here. Now they’ve unveiled their shiny new website. Official lowdown about that below. Oh, and they’ve also just announced that they’ve signed legendary artist George Perez to an exclusive deal. Wow.

BOOM! Studios is pleased to unveil their newly redesigned website (boom-studios.com) today. Beginning today, fans will find a fresh, modern look with an easier-to-navigate interface along with more social media integration.

The new boom-studios.com was designed by At Play Creative, the same design agency responsible for the redesigned BOOM! Studios logo that debuted earlier this year. The design team, led by Founder and CCO Gary M. Smith, worked closely and collaboratively with BOOM! to deliver a design that showcased the comic art first and foremost. At Play clients include ABC, Disney, and Hasbro among others.

In addition to a comprehensive online store, the relaunched website incorporates live feeds from BOOM!’s Twitter, Facebook, and BOOM!Pen Tumblr on a new Trending page with spotlighted Featured posts. The site includes information for Press and Retailers, with more to be added in the future. An Events page adds an easy reference point for all BOOM! convention appearances, signings, and launch parties.
