Rachel Rising in The Walking Dead #95

Well, this is very nice of Robert Kirkman. The successful writer behind The Walking Dead comic, and the inspiration for the hit TV series, is showing an excerpt of Rachel Rising, the undead mystery comic from Terry Moore, in this month’s ish of The Walking Dead. Nice one, Kirkman. He did the same a while ago by running a preview of Chew, and that went on to great success. Good on Image for showing this excerpt too, considering Rachel Rising isn’t even a comic published by them. I’ve read its first issue and was pretty impressed so may just have to pick up the TPB when it goes on sale at the end of this month.

Oh, and if, like me, you’ve missed The Walking Dead TV series, you’ll be happy to know that the DVD and Blu-Ray collection of the first season is now on Aussie shores.

THE RISING DEAD
Rachel Rising excerpt to appear in THE WALKING DEAD #95

THE WALKING DEAD #95, in stores on March 28, will have a five-page preview of Terry Moore’s horror comic Rachel Rising, published by Moore’s own Abstract Studio. The trade paperback collecting the first six issues of the ongoing series by the Strangers in Paradise creator, Rachel Rising: The Shadow of Death, will be in comic book stores the same day.

Rachel Rising tells the story of a young woman who cannot die. She wakes up at the foot of her own shallow grave, looking at her own freshly-murdered corpse. The events of her last night are hazy, and Rachel must piece together the events that led to her death — so that she can take revenge on the right person. Comic Book Resources described Rachel Rising as being “chock full of decadent mystery, unspeakable horror, strong characters, and beautiful black and white artwork, and it’s on its way to becoming the best of Terry Moore’s already impressive work.”

THE WALKING DEAD creator Robert Kirkman decided to include the preview in the latest issue of the Image Comics bestseller to support Moore’s work.

“Terry is a personal hero of mine dating back to my self-publishing days,” he writes in his introduction to the preview. “I’ve always been a fan of his work and an admirer of everything he’s been able to accomplish independently.”

THE WALKING DEAD #95 by Robert Kirkman, Charlie Adlard, and Cliff Rathburn continues the series’ “A Larger World” storyline. Rachel Rising: The Shadow of Death (ISBN 978-1-89259-751-9) is a 120-page black-and-white trade paperback.

Tygra was always my favourite.

And the digital express continues, with Dark Horse extending their digital comics availability to the Kobo eReader. Official lowdown below.

DARK HORSE COMES TO KOBO!
THE COMPANY MAKES DIGITAL LIBRARY OF GRAPHIC NOVELS AVAILABLE ON THE KOBO VOX eREADER!

Dark Horse continues to make headlines today, with news that the company’s best-selling titles are going beyond the iOS platform! Now, the largest independent publisher of graphic novels is pleased to announce a partnership with the top-selling eReading company, Kobo, to offer a library of nearly 100 titles available from Kobo.com to be read on the Kobo Vox eReader! This move follows an incredibly successful year of distributing titles digitally through Dark Horse’s proprietary iOS app, and corresponding digital storefront at Digital.DarkHorse.com.

“Kobo is the perfect partner for Dark Horse, because like us, they established themselves on the basis of innovation,” said Matt Parkinson, Dark Horse’s senior director of Marketing. “We couldn’t be more excited about the prospect of reaching new readers around the world with what we still believe to be some of the most exciting and dynamic storytelling the comics medium has to offer.”

“All of us at Kobo are thrilled to be adding Dark Horse’s amazing titles to our library,” said Michael Tamblyn, Kobo’s EVP of Content, Sales, and Merchandising. “Based on strong visual storytelling, comics are a great fit for the e-reading industry. This partnership truly marks a continuation of Kobo’s ‘Read Freely’ philosophy, where we’re dedicated to providing a world-class catalog of titles suitable for any market.”

The recently released Kobo Vox represents a new kind of eReader. Not only can book lovers read their favorite books, magazines, and newspapers in vivid color, but they also can connect with other readers to share their favorite passages via Facebook.

Woodley and Danger 5

I rarely watch TV these days. Well, I do watch Top Gear, Mythbusters and sometimes The Big Bang Theory and Whose Line Is It Anyway? but most of my TV watching is done on DVD now, such as The Office, 30 Rock and Community.

However two new shows on Australian screens caught my eye.

Woodley is an 8 part series that debuted on ABC this week. Frank Woodley plays an accident prone man attempting to bond with his daughter, and reconnect with his ex-wife. I was disappointed by the first episode, which you can watch here. Largely silent, and filled with Mr Bean like antics, it had some good moments, but nothing like what I experienced while watching Woodley’s previous sit-com, the hilarious The Adventures of Lano and Woodley. It starred Colin Lane along with Woodley and ran for two seasons from 1997-1999, as two housemates who always got fired, and was filled with superb moments of physical comedy. If you can grab it on DVD, do so. It never fails to crack me up. Here are just two clips from different episodes, but just check any of their videos out on YouTube.

If you remember the spoof Italian Spiderman web series from a few years ago, you’ll be happy to know that the Aussie duo behind it have a new project, which is also a parody and looks just as madcap. Danger 5 is well, check out the trailer below. It begins on Monday Feb 27 at 9:30 pm on SBS here in Australia.

The Darkness #100

Two violent video games, and 100 issues is a great achievement for an indie horror title. Press release below about the landmark issue, plus the variant covers from Jeremy Haun, Todd McFarlane, Michael Golden and Michael Broussard.

THE DARKNESS REACHES THE CENTURY MARK
Landmark 100th issue in stores February 29

Top Cow Productions and Image Comics proudly announced today that Darkness 100, the landmark anniversary issue, will land in stores February 29th, 2012.

The over-sized 100th issue follows hot on the heels of the release of The Darkness II video game from 2K Games and Digital Extremes. Long time writer PHIL HESTER (Wonder Woman, Green Hornet) concludes his epic run on the series with artists ROMANO MOLENAAR (THE DARKNESS II : CONFESSION), LEANDRO OLIVEIRA (Superman), and JOSE LUIS (PILOT SEASON: SERAPH). The landmark 100th issue will set the stage for David Hine (THE DARKNESS: FOUR HORSEMEN, BULLETPROOF COFFIN) and Jeremy Haun (ARTIFACTS, DETECTIVE COMICS) as they bring THE DARKNESS into Top Cow’s REBIRTH initiative.

“Why couldn’t they have hired someone else? Anyone else? I’ve been successfully pulling the wool over Darkness readers’ eyes for years now, and the second they get a look at what David Hine is up to they’re going to forget all about my dog and pony show,” Hester commented. “Don’t believe me? Crack open Hine and Kane’s BULLETPROOF COFFIN and see one of tomorrow’s classics while it’s fresh, then get in line behind me for The Darkness #101.”
As Darkness bearer, Jackie Estacado is on a collision course with the source of his power and misery — the Darkness itself! Estacado has traveled through numerous levels of the Darkness’ home dimension in his quest to confront his patron, all the while the Darkness has sought to bind him, distract him and prevent him from reaching it. Now only one of them will walk away from this momentous battle that has been building for years!

Featuring covers by Image luminaries TODD McFARLANE (SPAWN) and MICHAEL GOLDEN (The ‘Nam, SPAWN), alongside THE DARKNESS series artists JEREMY HAUN (Detective Comics) and MICHAEL BROUSSARD (ARTIFACTS).

The over-sized 48-page The Darkness #100 issue will be on sale in stores and digital platforms on March 21st, 2012 andwill carry a cover price of $4.99. Robot 13 TPB on Kickstarter

I interviewed the talented creative duo of Thomas Hall and Daniel Bradford a while back in the Extra Sequential magazine (pages 74-79 here) and, like many others, have been impressed by their Robot 13 series. Now to get all those issues collected as a Trade Paperback, the guys are looking to Kickstarter.

Find out more about how you can help, and get incentives like groovy buttons, t-shirts and mini-figures right here. This is a great series and I’ve been looking forward to what the guys would come up with next, so here’s hoping this project gives them the opportunity to make that happen, so more people can see how cool Robot 13 is.

MAKESHIFT MIRACLE BOOK 1: THE GIRL FROM NOWHERE

Written by Jim (Skullkickers) Zub, Illustrated by Shun Hong Chan

in stores May 2012 from UDON and Diamond Distribution

MAKESHIFT MIRACLE is the hit comic from UDON Entertainment and creators Jim Zub and Shun Hong Chan! The first eagerly-anticipated collection arrives in May as a beautiful high quality hardcover graphic novel with a durable library-quality binding, perfect for teen readers and manga fans alike!

Makeshift Miracle is a new publishing initiative for UDON, best known for their licensed comics, manga, and art books. A completely original story, Makeshift Miracle has been serialized online at www.makeshiftmiracle.com to an audience of more than 30,000 visitors since its launch! A steadily growing audience of fans of the work are building up intense interest for this title’s print release, with a built-in fanbase on the launch day!

“The online serialization has been a great way for us to get in touch with new readers and engage a wider audience before the book arrives,” says Erik Ko, head of UDON. “Readers, reviewers and librarians have had a chance to read a bit more of the story each week and see the beautiful art and story Hong and Jim have put together.”

Makeshift Miracle’s fable-like coming of age story focuses on Colby Reynolds, a disaffected teen left on his own for the first time. After an unusual, carefree girl named Iris comes literally crashing into his life, he discovers that she has strange powers and brings magic and menace in her wake! To protect her, Colby must avoid a enter a realm of dream and imagination, where nothing – not even his own sense of self – is what it first appears to be.

“The web-sized images we’ve posted online are great, but they don’t hold a candle to the lush new hardcover graphic novel edition,” says author Jim Zub. “Shun’s incredible atmospheric watercolors have to be seen up close to be believed, and we’ve filled out the hardcover with a dozen pages of new art and background sketches, and even a sneak-peak at volume 2! It’s going to be an amazing package.”
