Batman, Jor-El, Avengers & Noah

Now, that’s what I call a x-over! Here’s a look at some new movie (and one TV) pics.

The fun Batman: The Brave and the Bold is ending this year, but a new Batman is coming our way, as announced in France on the weekend. I’m kind of over Batman getting all the toon attention, but bigger plans are afoot, including Plastic Man, Doom Patrol and a claymation Batman from the guys behind Wallace and Gromit. Cool. Beware The Batman has Katana instead of Robin as Batman’s sidekick, Alfred becoming a gun toting butler (which he does when necessary in the comics BTW) and the first adaptation of Grant Morrison’s evil Professor Pyg. I wonder how they’ll make him kid friendly. Check out details here.

Russel Crowe is playing Superman’s Kryptonian father Jor-El (played by Marlon Brando in the ’70s film), while Kevin Costner plays his earthly dad. The costume seems to be going for the regal, fantasy look, complete with red cape and blue bodysuit, meaning Zack Snyder’s 2013 reboot will feature a Superman who uses his Kryptonian roots for his costume. I like the connection, but I doubt Crowe has the gravitas to play Jor-El. We’ll see.

Some very cool pics of Marvel’s The Avengers film have been released, showing Black Widow, Captain America, Nick Fury and director Joss Whedon. Check them all out here.

The director of The Fountain and Black Swan tackling Noah? Now that’s interesting.

Aronofsky says “Since I was a kid, I have been moved and inspired by the story of Noah and his family’s journey. The imaginations of countless generations have sparked to this epic story of faith. It’s my hope that I can present a window into Noah’s passion and perseverance for the silver screen.”

Marvel’s Point One 2012

Comic book newbies, and Marvel zombies take note. There’s a new one-shot launching in November that’ll show what in store next year for Marvel’s titles. I don’t know who that is on the cover. Perhaps Nova with a rad new getup?

The Foundation Of 2012 Is Here – POINT ONE!

Point One is a massive one-shot of 64 all-new pages of story by the top creators in the business, setting the stage for the biggest stories coming in 2012. Some Marvel Reads

It’s been a rather hectic week, but here’s a few quick mentions of some Marvel issues I’ve enjoyed over the last 2 weeks.

Spider Island: The Avengers is a great one-shot that doesn’t have Spidey have in it, but does feature Hawkeye, Jessica Jones and Ms. Marvel teaming up with Frog-Man, one of Marvel’s greatest D listers. Meanwhile Squirrel Girl is looking after Luke and Jessica Jones’ baby as she too (along with the rest of Manhattan) gains spider powers. Amongst the great action in the U.N as the Avengers fight Flag Smasher and his cronies, there’s some awesome humour. From Chris Yost and Mike McKone. Grab it as an entertaining respite from all the serious, epic action form Fear Itself.

Wolverine: Debt of Death is another one-shot, though blood and ninjas replace humour here. I’m not a huge Wolvie fan, but  David Lapham and David Aja are a great creative combo. Set in the ’60s (I think) Wolvie is about to leave Japan before he gets involved with Nick Fury, some Japanese cops, robo suits and the son of an old friend. Frankly, it’s awesome and is filled with great examples of action and timing, such as:

X-23 #14 follows Wolverine’s daughter/clone and thankfully has a “Previously…” page for irregular readers like me. Again, I only picked this up thanks to the creative team. In this case writer Marjorie Liu and artist Phil Noto. Part 2 of the Chaos Theory story arc, it made sense and has no action in it, but rather focuses on some very well crafted dialogue. Laura (that’s X-23) is hanging out with the Fantastic Four , or the Future Foundation as they’re known, in their swanky, hi-tech New York pad for most of the ish, and yakking about a mystery and getting to know each other a little more. It also features Gambit, looking the most normal he’s ever looked hanging out with Dr. Cecilia Reyes, who I haven’t seen in an X-Men comic since the ’90s. There’s some great tension between X-23 and the untrusting Thing, and Susan Storm’s caring nature comes to the fore. It all looks so clean and attractive, as Noto does so well.

Oh, and Punisher, and Black Panther are two of Marvel’s best series at the moment, which is a nice surprise.

X-Men: Regenesis

Marvel have bene teasing the post-Schism state of the X-Men with images featuring a wide cast of characters. With each image they’d unleash, one more character would lose the silhouette. Now, all the characters stand revealed, including Colossus in Juggernaut’s helmet by the looks of things.

Relaunches Aren’t All Bad

Who doesn’t love a good, nostalgic list? We fanboys and girls sure do.

Here’s Newsarama’s list of so-called 1o Most Important Relaunches, including Valiant, Star Wars, Vertigo and more.

Some Recent Recommended Reads

Here’s a bunch of stuff I’ve seen and read recently that I recommend checking out.

Limitless, starring Bradley Cooper and Robert DeNiro. Cooper plays a lazy writer lacking motivation, until an encounter with and old friend gives him access to a super drug that unlocks his brain’s full potential. Better than it could’ve been, it starts with a Fight Club-like approach with its visual trickery and subversive attitude, has a predictable middle, and then ramps up for an exciting conclusion.

Secret Six #36. It’s sad to see this series starring a bunch of baddies (Bane, Ragdoll, Catman, etc) go, but this is a satisfying farewell from Gail Simone and Jim Calafiore. Having pretty much all of DC’s big heroes show up in the stand off that ends the ish is cool, especially with Calafiore’s pencil behind them. I hope we see these characters again soon though in DC’s new plans.

The Punisher #1. I’ve been an occasional follower of the surly Frank Castle and thankfully the creators attached to him have always pulled him past his one-note potential. This (yet another) relaunch for the ex-Marine by Greg Rucka and Marco Checcheto is as gritty as any of Castle’s previous series. It’s a great set up for a new tale, and even though the titular gun lover hardly shows up, and doesn’t even speak, the moody art and unique story approach (a silent wedding massacre opener, and a police interview closer) make this issue stand out.

Tucker & Dale vs Evil. Two loveable hillbillies are mistaken for psycho killers by a group of attractive college students. Hilarity, and accidental bloodshed, ensues. It’s such a great genre-nixing set up. Unfortunately the trailer has the best bits, though the chemistry between leads Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine results in some great dialogue and comedic moments.

DC Retro-Active-1980s. This series of one-shots by DC is a good idea, and will go some way to quelling the discontent from nostalgic superhero readers. They’ve done the ’70s and next up is the ’90s (which I’m looking forward to, as that’s when my comics habit became serious) and getting the original creators from that decade is awesome. Each issue also includes a reprinted tale from the time period. Flash stars Wally West (always my fave speedster) and is by William Messner-Loebs and Greg LaRocque. Flash rescued a girl from the clutches of the Trickster a while ago and she’s fallen hard for her hero and steals his enemies’ weapons to get his attention. The backup tale doesn’t make much sense as its from the middle of a story arc, but reminds us that colouring techniques these days are much better. Batman’s trip down memory lane features the return of the baddie Reaper from the Year Two storyline (a tale of which is the reprint) and features Jason Todd as bare legged Robin, Batman calling him, “chum,” and a genuine mystery about who the new Reaper is.

X-Men Schism #2. I thought I’d grab the latest issue of this mini-series as it has art by Frank Cho and that’s always a good reason. Wolverine and Cyclops are still yet to fall out and go their separate ways, so the remaining 3 issues must be pretty intense. Cyclops really looks like his nickname, “Slim,” when Cho draws him.

Two Kirby Krackle Music Videos

Nerdcore duo Kirby Krackle have just released the first video from their third album, Super Powered Love. The song is Nerd Core and has a great, “if I won the lotto, I’d buy…” approach to it.

They’ve also created the theme song for Marvel’s official Who Watches the Watcher? online news, and here’s the video for that too.

Their songs and videos just keep getting better.
