Mighty Marvel Muggs

Who ever thought a biker with a flaming head, and a devourer of worlds could look so cute? I saw these in the display at Comic-Con and wanted every single one of them. Considering I’m mainly a DC devotee, that just goes to show you how adorable they are. These unique Mighty Muggs from Hasbro have limited articulation, and some come with character specific accessories. I picked up the Con exclusive Peter Parker/Spider-Man one and now it makes all the girls swoon. You can check out the larger range here of these arty interpretations, and sample some of my faves from the new wave below.

Just try and resist, I dare you, as you park your peepers on Captain America, Ghost Rider, Thor, Wolverine and Venom.

As any fanboy will tell you, comics are complicated. Howvere, if you venture into a comic shop for the first time, there are little ways to make it easier for yourself. Ask the employees for help, pick up a Trade Paper Back collection (with a no.1 on the spine) or just look at what freebies are on offer. Most comic shops will have them, such as flyers, posters, or the weekly newsletter, CSN. Now there’s soemthing new to add to the collection. Marvel: Your Universe, has a cover by artist Tom Raney and features a complete look at the major Marvel events of the last five years, as narrated by the all-knowing guy with the big head, Watcher. Cool. This will prove very helpful, as the MU has been a very busy place over the last 5 years, with Captain America’s death, Wolverine’s children, red Hulk, Spidey’s divorce and mutant numbers being drastically reduced. Marvel: Your Universe also contains prview material from various hardcovers too. It’s 32 pagers of handy info and absolutely free. It arrives on August 27, so keep your eyes open for it and be you too can be a well informed master of the MU.

Read Deadpool for Free

Everyone’s favourite quip throwing mercenary returns to the pages of Marvel Comics in September in a new series from writer Daniel Way and artist Paco Medina. Before that, though be sure to head over to Marvel’s new Digital Comics Unlimited site, because they’re letting you read Deadpool Saga #0 for free. It will tell you everything you need to know about this wise-cracking, quick-healing anti-hero.

You don’t find such generosity in massive conglomerates these days, so make the most of it. Wade Wilson AKA Deadpool has had some pretty big names working on his series over the years, such as Joe Kelly and Ed McGuiness and the fans seem to hunger for more adventures of the “merc with a mouth.” Deadpool – he’s just like Wolverine, but twice as ugly, and with a sense of humour.

Deadpool has been around since the heady comic book days of the 1990s and has only grown in popularity. He certainly stands out from the typical superhero crowd. Ryan Reynolds will be playing the character in next year’s X-Men spin-off, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, though how close he’ll stay to his comic book equivalent is anyone’s guess at this stage.
