Worthington In Last Days Of American Crime Film

The comics not even out yet and the film adaptation is already in its early stages. Radical’s forthcoming series The Last Days of American Crime has a premise begging for a film to spring from it, and the premise is this: In the near future the US government broadcast a signal to the public, making conscious criminal acts impossible to occur, so one desperate man decides to make the most of the time he has remaining, thus the clever title. Radical have some great high-concept books, and it’s good to see a fellow West Aussie becoming a part of one of their films. Press release below.

SAM WORTHINGTON TO PRODUCE AND STAR IN THE LAST DAYS OF AMERICAN CRIME

Radical Publishing is excited to announce that Sam Worthington (Clash of the Titans and James Cameron’s Avatar) has signed on as both star and producer for the film adaptation of The Last Days of American Crime, based off of Radical Publishing’s comic book series, The Last Days of American Crime, created and written by critically acclaimed author Rick Remender (Punisher, Fear Agent). Sam Worthington will be a producer along with producing partner, Michael Schwarz, and Radical’s president and publisher, Barry Levine. Rick Remender will be the executive producer/screenwriter for the film and Radical’s Executive Vice President, Jesse Berger, will executive produce.

The Last Days of American Crime is set in the not-too-distant future, as a final response to terrorism and crime, the U.S. government plans in secret to broadcast a signal making it impossible for anyone to knowingly commit unlawful acts. To keep this from the public, the government creates a distraction, installing a new currency system using digital charge cards. Graham Bricke, a petty criminal never quite able to hit the big score, intends to steal one of the charging stations, skip the country and live off unlimited funds for the rest of his life. But the media has leaked news of the anti-crime signal one week before it was to go live… and now Graham and his team have just a few days to turn the heist of the century into the last crime in American history.

“I had met Sam’s producing partner, Michael Schwarz, at the recent San Diego Comic-Con, who loved the concept for The Last Days of American Crime” said Radical Publishing’s President and Publisher, Barry Levine. “I figured that since Sam had done three tentpole movies back-to-back with Terminator Salvation, Avatar and Clash of the Titans, that he would want the more character driven role of Kevin Cash, the sociopathic partner to Graham Bricke. Michael had set up a meeting between Sam, CAA agents Kimberly Hodgert and Jon Levin along with myself to discuss Last Days. During the two hour meeting, we hit it off and Sam had committed to both star and produce.”

Rick Remender commented with “Sam is the perfect guy for this. He’s a scene stealer, made up in equal parts charm and intelligence. Seeing him play violent sociopath safe cracker Kevin Cash will be a treat all the world will enjoy.”

DC’s February Goodies

So DC Comics have just released their full solicitations for February. As always, there’s some great goodies including comics and TPBs but its the statues and action figures that often catch my eye, such as…

The Batman Reborn figures being released in July, which include the new Azarel and Batgirl, as well as Two-Face and Jason Todd doing their best Batman impression.

Also being released in July is the Bizarro Bust based on Gary Frank’s designs and the 1:6 scale Superman based on the classic Kingdom Come series, which features a cloth costume and 28 points of articulation.

My 800th Post!

Well actually the 800th post was yesterday, but now I’ve passed that impressive number. Now it may not sound like  a lot but it brings me joy to say it. Here’s some other numbers now that I’m in the mood for patting myself on the back.

9, 599 – total number the 3 issues of Extra Sequential have been read on Scribd

17, 438 – total number of ES subscribers on Scribd

69, 549 – total number of ES page views on Issuu

350 – number of U.S cents Arcana #1 (upcoming print version of ES) will cost

72 – number of days until Arcana #1 hits shelves. Oh, what a happy day that will be!

On a less self-congratulatory note, thanks to everyone who’s read, commented and liked my nerdy ramblings over the last 16 months. It’s all very much appreciated, and I have much more nerdiness to explore, dissect and promote in the future. Hope you stay!

Justice League: Crisis On Two Earths Trailer

Oh yeah, this is what I’m talking about! Whereas Marvel’s direct to DVD animated films have been fairly bland affairs treated with kid gloves, Warner Bros. are giving DC diehards film after film to get excited about. It’s a smart approach that they’ve employed with every recent film, such as Superman/Doomsday, Green Lantern: First Flight and Superman/Batman: Public Enemies, and it goes a little something like this; don’t bog down the story in exposition but just get straight to what the fans want. Apparently Public Enemies sold like gangbusters, and now Warner Bros. are considering a first for this series; a sequel.

This approach works splendidly, as it’s the fanboys and girls that lap this stuff up and expect the same kind of maturity and action they get from their comics. However, with great extras explaining just who these characters are and revealing a little DC history, newbies need not be overwhelmed, but hopefully intrigued by the DCU.

So, gushing aside, next year’s DVD feature is entitled Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths and features a good Lex Luthor from an alternate earth visiting “our” Justice League’s aid in wiping out their evil counterparts, the Crime Syndicate. Trailer below. I said Public Enemies was the best of these films, but I may just have to revise that statement early next year.

TV Show Comics On iPhone

We have a feature in the first issue of Arcana on comiXology and the work they’re doing bringing comics to the wonders of the iPhone. The number of  TV shows comic adaptations  on the handy device seems to be increasing too, with The Middle Man and Spartacus: Blood and Sand comics giving fans of the live action shows to follow their digital counterparts. There’s a short article here on the topic, even though they do describe X-Men as “animation influenced.” Oh well. At least comics are being promoted in various formats these days and it’s not just the sometimes intimidating/bewildering LCS as the only option for getting your mitts on some sequential art goodness.

Casper And The Spectrals #1

Casper and the Spectrals #1Ardden Entertainment made a good impression with their new Flash Gordon series and look set to use the same contemporary approach to another classic character – Casper. I know when the cover of the first issue was released a while back a few jaded fanboys rolled their eyes with this apparently desperate attempt to make the loveable ghost “down with the kids,” but really there are so few all-ages series on the shelves today, especially those in which parents, (or even grandparents in this case as Casper is turning 60!) can enjoy with their children. Newsarama seemed to enjoy the first issue and it is written by Ardden’s Brendan Deneen as well as great Spider-Man writers J.M DeMatteis and Todd Dezago, so is worth a look. Details below. The first issue is available this week.

Just in time for Casper the Friendly Ghost’s 60th anniversary, Ardden Entertainment proudly debuts Casper And The Spectrals, an all-new take on the world’s most famous ghost and his two friends, Wendy the Witch and Hot Stuff!  There is a city within New York City known as Spooky Town, but most humans are unable to see it. Within this city live the Spectrals, the ghosts, goblins, demons and witches of the world. When an ancient entity known as the Volbragg threatens both New York and Spooky Town, Casper and his friends are forced to band together and defeat an unimaginable evil!

Behind The Scenes

Thanks to the always informative Superman Homepage for sharing this fantastic new YouTube resource. FX guy Steve Johnson has worked on many major Hollywood films over the last 30 years and now that he’s no longer in the biz, he wants to get all his archival footage out there. Steve’s introductory video shows some of what we can expect, such as concept work, deleted scenes and more from films such as Spider-Man 2, Fantastic Four and the so-glad-it-was-never-made Tim Burton Superman film from the mid 1990s. Check it out below.

Digested From Gestalt

Now available from Gestalt Publishing are the first two issues of creator Bobby N’s Digested series. Bobby’s work was the highlight for me (and many others) in Gestalt’s recent Flinch anthology, so to see the writer/artist be the focus of these slice of life pages is sure to be a treat. More details and preview pages can be seen at Gestalt’s site.
