Undying Love From Image

Image Comics are on quite the winning streak lately, with a bunch of new series gaining favour from readers and critics alike, such as Chew, Skullkickers, Morning Glories and Who Is Jake Ellis?. Maybe this is the latest one, from long time artist and first time writer Tomm Coker, though he did co-write and direct the 2007 horror film Catacombs, which featured singer Pink. Slightly censored press release for Undying Love below.

IS LOVE STRONGER THAN DEATH?

A Man Fights For His Life and His Love in Undying Love

Image Comics is proud to present UNDYING LOVE, an all-new eight-issue miniseries from the creative collaboration of Tomm Coker and Daniel Freedman. Set in an expertly mood-evoking and cinematic Hong Kong, UNDYING LOVE presents a simple concept: hardened American ex-soldier, John Sargent, has fallen in love with a beautiful Chinese woman named Mei. The only thing keeping these star-crossed lovers apart? Mei is a vampire.
Determined to ensure the possibility of a future together, Sargent sets out with Mei on a journey to free her from this curse and make her human once more. Unfortunately, that means destroying the vampire that first made her, and Sargent soon learns Mei was bitten by one of the most powerful vampires in history! Further complicating their desperate situation, their unlikely human/vampire dynamic has piqued the unfathomable interests of other strange beings drawn from Chinese folklore.
“Being able to create a world, populate it with interesting characters and then realize that story through my own art is fantastic,” Coker said of his work on the serires. “It was the most fun I’ve had in years and I think that comes across when you read the book.”

Co-creator Daniel Freedman added, “With UNDYING LOVE, we tried to create something really special, bringing together different elements of the West and the East and letting them run wild in this violent love story. To say things get a little messy would be like asking a bear to eat with a knife and fork.”

UNDYING LOVE is already receiving advance praise from other well-respected creators:

“A work of stunning and staggering beauty, by one of the most talented, consistently awesome artists in comics. Helluva story, great setting and fantastic action to boot!” – John Layman (CHEW)

“Holy s***!!! This book looks f****** great!!!” – Robert Kirkman (INVINCIBLE, THE WALKING DEAD)

“So, you’d think Tomm would be satisfied with being one of the finest artists working in the comics medium, but no, he had to go and team up with Daniel and get me hooked on the writing, as well.  Well, okay, smart guys, where’s the second issue?  Because I want it.  Now!” – JG Jones (WANTED, Marvel Boy)

“I always feel two steps behind Tomm Coker, but UNDYING LOVE reminds me I’m probably further back than just two. With razor sharp line work and atmosphere you can cut with a knife, Tomm and Daniel Freedman have crafted a taught, spellbinding mixed genre tale that has the makings of something truly epic.” — Lee Bermejo (Superman, Hellblazer)

UNDYING LOVE #1 (FEB110389), a 32-page full-color action tale of fantasy, horror and unlikely romance, equal parts vampire mythology and Chinese folklore, will be on sale March 30, 2011 for $2.99.

Yes, you may be sick of vampires too, but this sounds like it’s worth a purchase.

Shaun Tan Wins Oscar

Although Aussies Geoffrey Rush and Jackie Weaver didn’t win the expected supporting actors Oscars, Shaun Tan did for Best Animated Short Film for The Lost Thing. Co-directed by Tan, and based on his OGN of the same name, it’s a charming tale of a man befriending a weird creature, and is narrated by Aussie comedian/singer Tim Minchin.

Tan’s wordless OGNs such as The Arrival are beautifully illustrated and powerful tales and it’s great to see him add another prestigious award to his resume.

I first saw The Lost Thing last year when Tan presented most of it during a presentation of his work at a library, and saw the 15 minute finished product at an animation showcase, and it was far superior to the other short films shown with it. Trailer for The Lost Thing is below. Hopefully, now with its highest level of awareness, the DVD will fly off the shelves, as it goes for 60 minutes with all the extras and also features a 48 page book.

Green Lantern: Emerald Knights Trailer

Arriving just before the live action film in June is this animated anthology, featuring a look at 6 different ring bearers. Of course, Hal Jordan is in there, but curiously Guy Gardner, Kyle Rayner and John Stewart aren’t, which is strange, considering most people know the former from the JLU cartoon, and he’ll be appearing in the live action film. It still looks good though, and seems to be adopting the same look across all 6 stories.

Reed Promo 2

This second teaser from Image features actors Clint Eastwood, James Stewart and John Wayne amongst a bunch of real life Wild West figures, and one fictional character. We know now that it’s a fun, all-ages series that’ll be announced soon.

Reed Promo Image

Teaser images are becoming increasingly popular in the comics biz these days. They offer mystery, and get people talking. Both The Big Two (Marvel and DC) and smaller publishers use them. Now the idea is getting ridiculous, as this teaser from Image proves, but I guess that’s the idea. All we know is the name of the animal art – “Reed Promo.” Very mysterious. Expect more like it.

Dwayne McDuffie Dies

This is really sad. Writer Dwayne McDuffie has died.  I know him, as most did, as creator of Static Shock (which became a cartoon), and his continual work promoting non-white characters in teams like JLA. Apart from his comics work, which included co-founding Milestone Media, he also worked on animated series (Justice League Unlimited, Ben 10) and films (Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths, and the just released All-Star Superman).

His run on JLA and the DC animated films is great and his desire to continually promote diversity within the ranks of superhero titles will hopefully be continued by others.

McDuffie passed away due to complications from a recent surgical procedure. Fond remembrances of the writer can be read here, here and here.

Booming Peanuts

With two simple images released today, rising indie publishers BOOM! Studios have announced that their BOOM! Kids line is now called Kaboom!, and that the first series under that banner is a biggie – Charlie Brown and co. Whether Peanuts will be reprints or what, we don’t know as yet. Great scoop though.

Update on The Lost Room Comic

Publisher Red 5 have been getting a lot of enquiries from fans of The Lost Room TV mini-series comic that was announced a while ago, and you can read what’s happening with it right here. In short, creators of the show Christopher Leone and Laura Harkcom, along with Paul Workman have created the story for #1 and the hunt is now on for a suitable artist.

The series is expected to launch this year.

Comics Games Galore

It’s a good week for comics inspired games, with the release of Marvel vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds. I’ve never been a huge fighting game fan, but the roster of characters is impressive, as are the special moves. Deadpool, for example, uses his own health bar as a weapon in his typical, fourth wall breaking style. On March 1 you can also download alternate costumes, including classic Thor, Iron Patriot (Norman Osborn in stolen Iron Man armour) and Steve Rogers.

Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters has its first trailer, although curiously it shows a cinematic, not any actual gameplay. Hmmm. It’ set to be released on June 1, the same day as its movie counterpart. It’s also the first time any Green Lantern has had their own game.

Much more promising is the sequel to Batman: Arkham Asylum, the best game the Dark Knight has ever had. Arkham City is made by Warner Bros. Interactive and Rocksteady Games and features Batman (obviously) as well as Joker (who doesn’t look too well), Harley Quinn, Hugo Strange and more. Check out 3 more pics of the upcoming game here.

Finally, Captain America’s movie tie-in game is set in WWII and is made by Sega. The pics (more here) look great although the footage shown at New York Comic Con last year shows the classic winged ear costume, but that could be an alternate costume, or perhaps it’s only used early in the game. Actor Chris Evans has only just signed on to voice Cap for the game, so it’s not his voice you hear in the video below.
