Hellboy: The Fury #3 Preview

This week is a huge one for Hellboy. Creator Mike Mignola and publisher Dark Horse have been quietly spreading the word that this is going to be one of those, “things will never be the same” stories that we read so much about. However, this time, it actually means something.

He’s already lost his eye, and now he’ll lose a lot more. Below is a snazzy preview of this week’s finale, along with an official description.

The word is out that today’s release of The Fury #3 will rock the comics world to its very core! With word leaking out over the last week that big changes are in store for Dark Horse’s most recognizable character, this third issue has sold out before even arriving on shelves.

In response, Dark Horse has rushed through reprints of all three issues of this critically acclaimed story arc. These reprints are available for reorder now, with an on-sale date of August 17, just one week after Hellboy: The Fury #3 goes on sale.

Hellboy: The Fury marks the dramatic conclusion to the epic story line by Mike Mignola and Duncan Fegredo that began in Darkness Calls back in 2007. This final three-issue story pits Hellboy against the Queen of Blood one on one, leaving behind a war-torn battlefield strewn with the bodies of monsters and knights. In this dramatic conclusion, the fate of the world, and of Hellboy himself, lies with the Ogdru Jahad, his greatest foe, culminating in one final battle for the ages.

Stan Lee’s The Seekers Contest

Work with the legendary Stan Lee as a writer or artist and win $10, 000? Yes please!

What’s that? You must be a U.S resident. Oh.

Have you ever dreamed of writing or illustrating a comic under the tutelage of the legendary Stan Lee? Well, here’s your chance True Believer! MTV Comics and POW! Entertainment are offering you the chance to write or illustrate the digital graphic novel “The Seekers!”

Over the next 3 weeks we’ll be accepting submissions from artists and writers for an opportunity to earn approximately $10,000.00 to do just that. You read that right, that’s 10-Gs.

In order to enter you’ll need to read the complete set of official rules, but here are the highlights of the contest:

● Submissions will be open for three weeks, closing on August 26, 2011
● ARTISTS will submit five (5) black and white pages of sequential comic art based on a scene from “The Seekers”
● WRITERS will write ten (10) pages of comic script and a two (2) page treatment for the series based on Stan’s treatment
● Submissions will be narrowed down by the MTV Comics editorial staff to the top 20 semi-finalists in each category; that’s 20 writers, and 20 artists
● Semi-finalists will be voted on by the public beginning on September 5, 2011
● The top 5 vote-getters in each category will be forwarded on to Stan Lee, who will hand select the winners
● Winners will be presented the opportunity to write or illustrate MTV Comics’ The Seekers (and earn approximately 10k)

First Henry Cavill Superman Image

British actor Henry Cavill (The Tudors, Immortals) is Superman in Zack Snyder’s (300,Sucker Punch) 2013 Superman reboot. Laurence Fishburne was officially cast as his boss at The Daily Planet, Perry White. Yes, White is..white, but I can see Fishburne in the role.

The suit is obviously textured, for easier special affects use I’d assume, and there’s no sign of the famous spit curl or red undies. The cape looks huge too, but overall, I like it. It’s darker, like the original comics costume, and the smashed safe wall seem to allude to a powerful fight for the Man of Steel. Finally!

The noticeable thing is that by the time this gets to the screen, the new comics costume, as designed by Jim Lee, will have already been out for 2 years, but I guess this film costume is what most people associate with the Man of Steel, plus the more armoured new comics version would probably look rather odd in action.

The New Ultimate Spider-Man Is…

A new character, but he’s not white, as was suspected. Read more at USA Today which includes writer Brian Michael Bendis explaining the motivation behind the new man under the red mask.

Batman’s Arkham City Skins

I still haven’t finished the first game to do Batman justice, Arkham Asylum and probably never will, but the sequel, Arkham City looks very tempting. It’s out on October 19 and also features Two-Face, Catwoman, Penguin and a few others, and even Robin, in a costume that looks like Tim Drake’s early version. Nice. I was looking at the Coming Soon box at JB Hi-Fi and it comes with some pretty cool extras here in Australia, including Tim’s alternate Red Robin skin.

Batman himself also comes with a slew of skins. Yes, a slew. Unfortunately, different countries get different skins apparently, but I’m sure some eager gamers will find a way around that. Below you can see what’s available and from left to right we have Batman Beyond, The Dark Knight Returns (which Aussies get! Woo hoo!), Batman: Earth One (from the upcoming OGN), Classic Batman, The Animated Series and finally, the standard Arkham City costume.

JB’s collector’s edition also comes with a Batman animated film. Unfortunately it’s the anime anthology Gotham Knight from a few years ago. It would’ve been so much better if they could put in one of the more recent animated films based on the comics, like Under the Red Hood, or even Batman: Year One, seeing as that’s being released at the same time.

Here’s Bane

And here’s our first full look at Bat-breaker Bane, as played by Tom Hardy in next year’s The Dark Knight Rises. It’s obviously cold wherever he is, as he’s certainly more rugged up than his comics equivalent. There’s also a camouflaged Tumbler which looks like the prototype seen in the first film in the trilogy. More on set pics here, but the 2 below are the best.

Ok, here’s one more then. The pair fighting in Pittsburgh, the stand in for Gotham City Hall. More of the same here. It looks like Batman’s costume is the same as the last film. I hope he gets one last suit upgrade though. Maybe he will during the course of the film.

Marvel: Season One Info

Perhaps, and understandably, spurred on, by DC’s massive success with the Superman: Earth One OGN last year, Marvel are trying something similar with their characters, in order to get the attention of comics newbies. It’s actually a good idea and should be done more often, as walking into a comic shop for the first time can be daunting if you don’t know where to start. The following info was released at last week’s Comic-Con but the pics are new.

Then again, Marvel make  a point to mention that they have been working on this for over a year, so I guess it’s one of those coincidences that happens between The Big Two from time to time.

MARVEL: SEASON ONE LINE-UP

Next year, immerse yourselves in the Marvel Universe like never before as the world’s greatest super heroes star in a line of all-new graphic novels with Marvel: Season One! Aimed at new and old readers alike, the first wave featuring Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Daredevil and The X-Men, brings readers a complete story, modernizing the seminal origins of these characters while also offering new revelations for long-time fans. New He-Man Mini-Comics

Dark Horse are creating new comics to be packaged with Mattel’s upcoming He-Man action figures, and the stories will be a continuation from the original ’80s mini-comics. Wow. Good news. You can read an interview here with their writer Tim Seeley (Witchblade). The covers are by Eric Powell (The Goon) with interior art by Wellinton Alves.

On a related note, action figure collectors can join Mattel’s new Club Eternia, which begins next year. For $20 a month, you’ll receive a host of goodies and exclusives throughout next year.
