Fall Out Toy Works #1 Review

Fall Out Toy Works #1The best thing about this issue is the first 5 pages, which are silent and show a woman making eggs for her “husband” before flinging herself out of a high window. After that, it’s a bit of a letdown. From the mind of Pete Wentz from Fall Out Boy, as well as Darren Romanelli and Nathan Cabrera, it is written by Brett Lewis and given art duties by Sam Basri. In the next few pages we learn that the bearded man who saw his potential female companion hit the sidewalk is a man called The Baron. He’s entrusted a group of scientists to make him an android wife, and things aren’t going well. He soon teams up with a financially struggling toy maker to see his dreams come true.

There’s really not much more to say than that. The art has a light touch and a definite manga flavour which makes it easy on the eyes. The story, however, needs work. There are times when it starts to go deeper than its obvious Disney facade (talking bee assistant, lonely scientist, kid in a bear suit) with ponderings on the definition of love and existence. And is it just me, or the scene where lawyers in fancy suits beat up the the toy maker in a dark alley is supposed to be funny, right? With one smarmy guy proclaiming, “We’re lawyers in Los Angeles…we can do whatever we want!” I assume so.

The problem is that the story hasn’t found its feet yet. It isn’t as accessible as it should be, especially for what Image hope to be a book with cross-over appeal.  The cover alone proclaims, “FOB Presents,” “Fall Out,” ” Pete Wentz,” and “Inspired by the ideas and lyrics of Fall Out Boy.” If they’re going to go that far to appeal to fans of the band, then surely a short intro by Wentz explaining his part in all this (along with the other 2 creators) or exactly what lyrics inspired the tale (“Tiffany Blews” apparently) would make sense.

For newcomers to comics this isn’t the greatest example, but I certainly don’t blame Image for trying. Musicians getting behind comics is the flavour of the year, and Gerard Way’s The Umbrella Academy series from Dark Horse shows that it can be done beautifully. One look at the comments from people on the official Fall Out Boy site about Toy Works shows an impressive number of excited comics newbies, and that’s a good thing, but I’d suggest they buy the similar Clockwork Girl hardcover from Arcana instead. With this first issue it looks too early to tell, but the story is going somewhere and will hopefully find a balance between its Disney film aesthetic and Blade Runner themes. If you’re still not sure if it’s for you, then check out the teaser for the upcoming motion comic below, even though there’s no mention of the fact that it’s a comic. Oh boy. However, I will say that this 5 issue series looks to take bold strides into the non-comics world. Just look at the ads inside – Dita sunglasses (with artist Jim Lee as the model!), Decaydence record label, Clandestine Industries fashion and designer/co-creator Darren Romanelli’s site. This is exactly the kind of cool that comics need to emanate and go a long way to erasing any lingering negative stereotypes about sequential art. Hopefully series like this, and Tyrese Gibson’s Mayhem! comic will bring in new readers who will then go on to discover the full breadth that this medium offers.

You can also check out an interesting interview with Wentz and Romanelli on the project here.

3fistedcomicsComic book enthusiasts take note. We’ve lined up three of Perth’s finest creators to speak about writing, illustrating and publishing graphic novels. Wolfgang Bylsma (managing director of Gestalt Comics), Justin Randall and Anton McKay will take us through the ins and outs of their craft.

Wolfgang Bylsma has managed his own creative agency since 1995. Having worked in tertiary education, sound design, web development and brand strategy he co-founded Gestalt Publishing in 2005 where he continues to serve as Managing Director and Principal Editor.

Justin Randall is a design lecturer for Curtin University, a commercial illustrator and a graphic novelist. He’s worked on titles such as 30 Days of Night, Silent Hill and is currently producing his own graphic novel series called Changing Ways.

Anton Mckay has a day-job and a cat. He’s contributed a few short comix-stories to WA publisher Gestalt Comics “Character Sketches” and “Flinch” anthologies. He’s currently working on his first graphic novel, painfully slowly. He writes abysmal biographical notes about himself.

Gestalt Comics will be setting up an exhibition of comic artwork and a book stand at the event, we’ll have Skye Ogden’s animated video clip for Japanese band Yongen on show and Anton McKay will entertain us with his musical stylings.

This event will be held at The Rosemount, Cnr Angove and Fitzgerald St, North Perth. Seats are limited so be sure to get there on time.

Disney Buys Marvel!

I know – what?! Well, it’s not April Fool’s Day and CBR and Newsarama are reporting it. The rather boring press release below doesn’t really reveal a lot, but I think it’s a good thing, as long as Joe Quesada still remains in charge and X-Men won’t be filled with princesses and singing animals. I’m sure Marvel will have plenty to say about this in the coming days, and I can already sense fanboys in a spin. The loose link is that Disney characters have been in comics for decades, and Mickey Mouse and pals are now being published by BOOM! Studios, and they’re making the Surrogates film based on the Top Shelf comic. Still – wow. DC Comics  is owned by Warner Bros. and now this. The two largest English speaking comic book publishers on the planet are now owned by multi-national corporations. Is that a good thing? Check out Disney CEO Robert A. Iger’s official video announcement here.

Worldwide leader in family entertainment agrees to acquire Marvel and its portfolio of over 5,000 characters

Acquisition highlights Disney’s strategic focus on quality branded content, technological innovation and international expansion to build long-term shareholder value.

Building on its strategy of delivering quality branded content to people around the world, The Walt DisneyCompany (DIS) has agreed to acquire Marvel Entertainment, Inc. (MVL) in a stock and cash transaction, the companies announced today.

Under the terms of the agreement and based on the closing price of Disney on August 28, 2009, Marvel shareholders would receive a total of $30 per share in cash plus approximately 0.745 Disney shares for each Marvel share they own. At closing, the amount of cash and stock will be adjusted if necessary so that the total value of the Disney stock issued as merger consideration based on its trading value at that time is not less than 40% of the total merger consideration.

Based on the closing price of Disney stock on Friday, August 28, the transaction value is $50 per Marvel share or approximately $4 billion.

“This transaction combines Marvel’s strong global brand and world-renowned library of characters including Iron Man, Spider-Man, X-Men, Captain America, Fantastic Four and Thor with Disney’s creative skills, unparalleled global portfolio of entertainment properties, and a business structure that maximizes the value of creative properties across multiple platforms and territories,” said Robert A. Iger, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company. “Ike Perlmutter and his team have done an impressive job of nurturing these properties and have created significant value. We are pleased to bring this talent and these great assets to Disney.”

“We believe that adding Marvel to Disney’s unique portfolio of brands provides significant opportunities for long-term growth and value creation,” Iger said.

“Disney is the perfect home for Marvel’s fantastic library of characters given its proven ability to expand content creation and licensing businesses,” said Ike Perlmutter, Marvel’s Chief Executive Officer. “This is an unparalleled opportunity for Marvel to build upon its vibrant brand and character properties by accessing Disney’s tremendous global organization and infrastructure around the world.”

Under the deal, Disney will acquire ownership of Marvel including its more than 5,000 Marvel characters. Mr. Perlmutter will oversee the Marvel properties, and will work directly with Disney’s global lines of business to build and further integrate Marvel’s properties.

The Boards of Directors of Disney and Marvel have each approved the transaction, which is subject to clearance under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act, certain non-United States merger control regulations, effectiveness of a registration statement with respect to Disney shares issued in the transaction and other customary closing conditions. The agreement will require the approval of Marvel shareholders. Marvel was advised on the transaction by BofA Merrill Lynch.

DCU Online Green Lantern

Below are newly revealed pics from Sony of Hal Jordan Green Lantern from the upcoming DC Universe Online game. Here’s the skinny.

Hal Jordan acquired the power ring and lantern from a dying alien whose spaceship crashed on Earth. The alien’s objective was to find an individual who is “utterly honest and born without fear” all which describes the character of Hal Jordan.

Hal is the premier Green Lantern in the famed Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic police force. Armed with his ring, which creates hard light constructs powered by his imagination, Hal patrols Earth with his mantra:

“In brightest days, in blackest night,

No evil shall escape my sight.

Let those who worship evil’s might

Beware my power, Green Lantern’s light!”

XIII In English In 2010

You know what a good game on the original XBOX was? XIII. That, and Black were my two of my fave games on the old chunky console. XIII was based on the popular French comics, and now it’s being published in English through Cinebook, who specialise in bringing European comics to the West. The last time XIII was adapted for English readers was in 2006-07 with Dabel Brothers and Marvel, but was never finished. That’s about to change. Press release below.

Cinebook to publish cult graphic novel series “XIII” in English from May 2010

XIII French ComicOver the last 25 years, the dark, engrossing graphic-novel series “XIII” has attracted a cult following in French-speaking countries and beyond, with readers eagerly awaiting every one of the 19th instalments published so far.

Launched in 1984 by two Belgian authors, Jean Van Hamme and William Vance, “XIII” has been turned into a video game by Ubisoft as well as a TV miniseries starring Stephen Dorff and Val Kilmer, which premiered on France’s Canal+ in October 2008 and on NBC in the US in February 2009. Such is the popularity of the graphic novel that a gallery of its characters drawn by Vance was used to illustrate special-edition “XIII” scratch card tickets in France since 2000.

The central character in “XIII” is an amnesiac on the run, caught in the crossfire as he tries to understand his true identity while attempting to make sense of various conspiracies swirling around him. With many twists and turns, it’s a compulsive read for teenagers and adults alike and has already been translated into several languages.

XIII FilmInitially serialized in Spirou magazine in 1984, “XIII” was created by Jean Van Hamme, the author behind “Thorgal” and “Largo Winch”–the latter in comic and book form as well as on the big screen,” and William Vance, illustrator of the bestsellers “Howard Flynn,” “Bruce Hawker ,” “Bruno Brazil”, “Bob Morane and Marshall Blueberry.”

From May 2010, Cinebook will publish “XIII” in English at the rate of one new volume every two months. Only three episodes of the cult Franco-Belgian bande dessinée originally saw the light of day in English in the late Eighties, so this will enable fans new and old to discover and rediscover the mystery series.

The Canterbury-based publisher has acquired the English-language publishing rights in an exclusive agreement with Mediatoon.

“I’m delighted that Cinebook has committed to publishing “XIII” alongside “Thorgal,” “Largo Winch” and “Lady S,” as well as “Blake & Mortimer.” “XIII” is another one of the many prestigious series Jean Van Hamme has been associated with over the years,” says Mediatoon director of Foreign Rights Sophie Castille.

“I’m proud to add this legendary series to our catalogue, especially as readers have been clamouring for it for several years,” notes Cinebook founder Olivier Cadic.

“XIII” joins internationally-famous series such as “IR$,” “The Scorpion,” “Insiders” and “Aldebaran,” already published by Cinebook in addition to other Van Hamme series, further strengthening its portfolio of English-language titles particularly popular with teenagers and adults.

Star Wars On iPhone

Sure, you can turn your iPhone into a lightsabre and impress your friends, but now you can go one better and read a slew of Star Wars comics on it too.  Check out a preview of Legacy Volume 1, right here.

STAR WARS™ COMICS ARRIVE ON iTUNES!

LUCASFLIM, THQ WIRELESS AND DARK HORSE COMICS PARTNER TO BRING STAR WARS™ TO THE iPHONE

Star Wars Legacy Vol. 1In a partnership that will echo through the cosmos, Lucasfilm, THQ Wireless, and Dark Horse Comics will release Star Wars™ comics to the iPhone mobile platform for the first time ever!

The selection of Star Wars: The Clone Wars Vol. 1 – Shipyards of Doom, Star Wars: Empire Vol. 1 – Betrayal and Star Wars: Legacy Vol. 1 – Broken represents three of the most important time periods in the history of the Star Wars galaxy. The three collections will span the time between the Clone Wars era, the Classic era and the distant future.

Star Wars: Empire Vol. 1 – Betrayal is set just weeks before the events of the original film, Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, and follows a faction of disgruntled Imperial Officers attempting to overthrow Emperor Palpatine. But the plot is complicated by the emergence of the bounty hunter Boba Fett and by the loyalty of Darth Vader to his dark master. Betrayal will be released in four chapters, written by Scott Allie and drawn by Brian Horton.

Star Wars: Legacy Vol. 1 – Broken takes place more than a century after the events of Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi and focuses on a fifth-generation Skywalker named Cade, a rogue Jedi and bounty hunter who travels the galaxy living by his own code. Broken will be released in two parts, written by John Ostrander and drawn by Jan Duursema.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars Vol. 1 – Shipyard of Doom is based on the wildly popular animated series from Lucasfilm Animation and highlights events from the epic time period when Jedi Knights Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker and Padawan Ahsoka Tano struggled to maintain order and peace in a war-torn galaxy. Shipyards of Doom will be release in its entirety, written by Henry Gilroy, and drawn by the Fillbach Brothers.

Working together with Lucasfilm and THQ Wireless, Dark Horse Senior Editor Randy Stradley and Senior Web Designer Mike Denning carefully reformatted each panel and page to maximize the visual grandeur while staying true to the original comic books. All parties involved ensured that the material would transition to the new medium in the best format possible, delicately considering every word balloon and background image.

Dark Horse President Mike Richardson is delighted with the new program, stating, “Lucasfilm has been a proud and longstanding partner of ours, and I’m equally excited to be working with the wonderful people at THQ Wireless on this program. The stories of The Clone Wars, Legacy, and Empire embody some of the best comics in the Star Wars universe that Dark Horse has ever released. I think it’s wonderful that these key tales will be available to fans everywhere in a new and accessible way.”

Adam Comiskey, Vice President THQ Wireless commented, “Bringing a selection of some of the finest comic books to the iPhone mobile platform is an exciting chapter in our relationship with Lucasfilm. Our partnership with Dark Horse means that for the first time, Star Wars Fans will be able to use their iPhone to view a fantastic line up of comics.”

Ted Kennedy Comic

Bluewater’s success with its Political Power series of biographical one-shots continues. This is their latest, as announced yesterday. Depending on your point of view, this is either very good, or very bad timing for Bluewater, considering today’s news of Kennedy’s death. Here’s the official skinny.

“LION OF THE SENATE” TED KENNEDY ROARS AS NEW COMIC BIO

TED KENNEDYTed Kennedy spent a lifetime in politics and in the spotlight of the public eye. In November, the “Lion of the Senate” will be the featured subject on an upcoming issue of Bluewater Productions’ Political Power biography comic series.

Considered by many to be the voice of the modern Democratic Party, Edward “Ted” Kennedy triumphed over tragedy and scandal to carve out a legacy that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with his celebrated brothers President John F. Kennedy and Senator Robert Kennedy.

Political Power: Ted Kennedy, scheduled for release in November, examines Kennedy’s eventful life from his youthful competition with his brothers and dealing with their untimely deaths, to the Chappaquiddick scandal that nearly destroyed his career; his failed bid for the presidency in 1980, and his distinguished career in the Senate.

“You might not agree with his views. But you have to agree that Ted Kennedy is an American icon of politics,” said Bluewater president Darren G. Davis. He noted that although it is not the first issue of “Political Power” to be published, Political Power: Ted Kennedy was one of the first biographies approved for production.

The issue, authored by Brent Sprecher, was illustrated by Alejandro Figueroa. The cover art was provided by Patricio Carbajal.

“We could have filled several volumes with his accomplishments and failures,” Sprecher said. “However, in 23 pages, I think we created an objective and insightful portrait of Senator Kennedy and his impact on the national landscape.”

The comic book series, launched in July with a feature on former-Secretary of- State and retired four-star general Colin Powell, includes biographies on Ronald Reagan, Barack Obama, and several others.

“Like its sister title Female Force, Political Power strives to tell even-handed stories of the individuals responsible for shaping the American way of life,” Davis added.

The Anchor #1 Preview

This new monster mash, and smash, series by Phil Hester and Brian Churilla isn’t out until October, but BOOM! Studios is feeling generous, so below is a hefty 10 page preview, plus character designs by Churilla. It looks like a series with equal parts fun and sincerity. This is what BOOM! Have to say about it:

THE ANCHOR. Holy warrior, unholy war. Freak of nature, beast of burden, hulking outcast, medieval prize fighter, Viking raider… God’s own leg-breaker.

One thousand years ago a hulking outcast sought refuge in the crumbling ruins of an ancient monastery and offered in return the one thing he had to give – his fists. Transformed into an immortal warrior monk standing at the gates of Hell itself to keep our world free from its invading armies, The Anchor is mysteriously tricked into centuries of slumber. But today, this holy warrior rises to battle all the unholy monsters unleashed during his slumber.

Cataclysmic action, quirky humor, and profound pathos for fans of HELLBOY and THE GOON. A new BOOM! ongoing series, brought to you by Eisner Award-nominated writer/artist Phil Hester (GREEN ARROW, SWAMP THING, THE COFFIN, FIREBREATHER, THE DARKNESS) and fan-favorite artist Brian Churilla (REX MUNDI, THE ENGINEER, CREEPY).

Star Wars Death Troopers Fan Film Contest

Death Troopers NovelDuring Comic-Con last month, there were a lot of costumes, but there were more Rorschach and Storm Troopers than I’ve ever seen in one place. One particular posse of Troopers looked like they came from a zombie film. They were covered in blood and looked rather grisly, and cool. It turns out they were promoting the new Death Troopers novel by Joe Scrieber, which hits shelves on October 13. To promote the novel, Del Rey are giving fans the chance to show their film-making wares and win some special goodies at the same time.

All you need to do is create a 30 second to 2 minute trailer for the book and upload it to YouTube before September 18. Further details can be found here.

This is the official description of the novel:

When the Imperial prison barge Purge–temporary home to five hundred of the galaxy’s most ruthless killers, rebels, scoundrels, and thieves–breaks down in a distant, uninhabited part of space, its only hope appears to lie with a Star Destroyer found drifting, derelict, and seemingly abandoned. But when a boarding party from the Purge is sent to scavenge for parts, only half of them come back–bringing with them a horrific disease so lethal that within hours nearly all aboard the Purge die in ways too hideous to imagine.

And death is only the beginning.

The Purge’s half-dozen survivors–two teenage brothers, a sadistic captain of the guards, a couple of rogue smugglers, and the chief medical officer, the lone woman on board–will do whatever it takes to stay alive. But nothing can prepare them for what lies waiting aboard the Star Destroyer amid its vast creaking emptiness that isn’t really empty at all. For the dead are rising: soulless, unstoppable, and unspeakably hungry.
