Charity Serenity Screening

This is a good diea. A good film too. Can’t Stop The Serenity is, well, I’ll let them describe it.

Can’t Stop the Serenity (CSTS) is a unique opportunity to indulge your geeky side while doing some good! Since 2006, fans have organized screenings of Joss Whedon’s Serenityto raise funds and awareness to support Equality Now in their work for the protection and promotion of the human rights of women around the world. Join us as we aim to misbehave for a good cause!

Serenity, is of course the film adaptation of Firefly, the unfortunately short-lived TV series from Joss Whedon , creator of Buffy, and writer/director of Marvel’s blockbuster film, The Avengers. Here’s the trailer to jog your memory, and here is where you can buy tickets for the Perth, Western Australia event.

DC Comics Necessary Evil Trailer

Now that San Diego Comic-Con is only hours away, expect more announcements like this. Well, this DC Comics documentary focusing on its supervillains was announced a while ago, but here is the first trailer, and it’s looking good, er…evil.

Kaiju Movie Sale

Kaiju is a Japanese word that means, “strange beast,’ so Wikipedia tells me. It’s also a buzzword at the moment, thanks to this week’s release of Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim. As a refresher to what Pacific Rim is, check out the latest trailer and featurette, and get excited!

If you like what you see on the big screen and want to see more of giant monsters fighting other giant monsters (and robots), then you might want to see the sale that Madman has on now, featuring some great films such as Big Man Japan, Troll Hunter, Monsters, and Godzilla classics, and anime like Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Gigantor.

About The Films

Batman Begins (2005)

Batman Begins explores the origins of the Batman legend and the Dark Knight’s emergence as a force for good in Gotham. In the wake of his parents’ murder, disillusioned industrial heir Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) travels the world seeking the means to fight injustice and turn fear against those who prey on the fearful. He returns toGotham and unveils his alter-ego: Batman, a masked crusader who uses his strength, intellect and an array of high tech deceptions to fight the sinister forces that threaten the city.

The Dark Knight (2008)

The follow-up to Batman BeginsThe Dark Knight reunites director Christopher Nolan and star Christian Bale, who reprises the role of Batman/Bruce Wayne in his continuing war on crime. With the help of Lt. Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) and District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), Batman sets out to destroy organized crime in Gotham for good. The triumvirate proves effective, but soon find themselves prey to a rising criminal mastermind known as The Joker (Heath Ledger), who thrusts Gotham into anarchy and forces Batman closer to crossing the fine line between hero and vigilante. Maggie Gyllenhaal joins the cast as Rachel Dawes. Returning from Batman Begins are Oldman, Michael Caine as Alfred and Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox.

Dark Knight Rises (2012)

It has been eight years since Batman vanished into the night, turning, in that instant, from hero to fugitive. Assuming the blame for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon both hoped was the greater good. For a time the lie worked, as criminal activity in Gotham City was crushed under the weight of the anti-crime Dent Act.

But everything will change with the arrival of a cunning cat burglar with a mysterious agenda. Far more dangerous, however, is the emergence of Bane, a masked terrorist whose ruthless plans for Gotham drive Bruce out of his self-imposed exile. But even if he dons the cape and cowl again, Batman may be no match for Bane. Christian Bale stars, along with Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Morgan Freeman.

Man of Steel Review

Here it is – my thoughts on Superman’s newest big screen epic. We here in Australia didn’t receive the film until about 2 weeks after most other countries, but it was worth the wait.

Escape Plan Trailer

I’m sure I remember reading about this film, originally called, The Tomb, years ago. Now it’s almost here. Escape Plan stars Stallone and Schwarzenegger stuck together in a hi-tech prison. It opens in October and looks like a great action film from two of The Expendables films.

Neil Gaiman Doco

The team behind recent documentaries on some of comics’ greatest writers are focusing on British scribe Neil Gaiman for their next film. Official info below.

Sequart Research & Literacy Organization, in conjunction with Respect! Films, is honored and proud to announce that author Neil Gaiman will be the next subject in its expanding line of comics-centric documentaries.

In the tradition of Sequart’s Grant Morrison: Talking with Gods and Warren Ellis: Captured Ghosts documentaries, the Neil Gaiman film will be an all-access look at the scribe’s illustrious, media-spanning career, from his first foray into published writing all the way up to the current signing tour for his new novel, The Ocean at the End of the Lane. This unique profile will include footage from Neil’s performances with Amanda Palmer, lectures and readings from across the country, as well as extensive interviews with Neil and his fans, contemporaries, and closest collaborators.

The film will be directed by Patrick Meaney, produced by Jordan Rennert, and executive produced by Mike Phillips and Julian Darius. More details will roll at Sequart.org throughout the summer, but for the time being, please enjoy this little teaser trailer.

In addition to the Gaiman documentary, completion is just a few months away on two other Sequart documentary projects. The Image Revolution, chronicling the founding and history of the world’s most successful independent comic book company, Image Comics, is extremely close to completion, and will be playing at festivals this autumn. Comics in Focus: Chris Claremont’s X-Men is also nearly complete. The film reveals the behind-the-scenes story of Claremont’s landmark seventeen-year run on the title. It will be released this autumn.

And check out our two previous films, Grant Morrison: Talking With Gods and Warren Ellis: Captured Ghosts, available on Special Edition DVD, each with over two hours of bonus material (or for download).

About the Publisher: Sequart Research & Literacy Organization is a non-profit devoted to the study and promotion of comic books as a legitimate art form.  It publishes books and documentaries aimed at making comics scholarship accessible.  For more information, click here.

Return of the Jedi’s 30th Anniversary Video

New Pacific Rim Trailer

From the recent WonderCon, comes this exciting trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s July releasing film, Pacific Rim. Seeing it’s from del Toro (Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth) , we get plenty of cool looking action, and of course, Ron Perlman.

I have the two re-done Blu-Rays of the excellent anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion, which Pacific Rim has been compared to, with its giant mechs vs giant monsters set up. Still, certainly worth seeing on the big screen.

The prequel comic, with a cover by Alex Ross (below) hits stores form Legendary Comics a few weeks before the film.

Hitting stores June 5, PACIFIC RIM: TALES FROM YEAR ZERO serves as a prequel to the highly-anticipated motion picture — Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures Pacific Rim.  Chronicling the very first time Earth is menaced by incredible monsters known as Kaiju, these inhuman beasts rise from the ocean depths and threaten to extinquish all mankind! Witness the race to develop massive robot fighting machines called Jaegers, each one controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. This action-packed book features many of the key characters from the film as we follow them in their early careers. Written by Pacific Rim screenwriter himself, Travis Beacham, and with del Toro’s hands-on supervision, this volume is beautifully illustrated by Sean Chen, Yvel Guichet, and Pericles Junior; inks by Steve Bird and Mark McKenna.

Be on the lookout at for more information on PACIFIC RIM: TALES FROM YEAR ZERO.

Superman: Unbound Clip With Lois And Supergirl

After the first clip from next month’s animated film, comes this new one focusing on the ladies.

This is shaping up to be one good looking film and by that, I mean the style of animation, although the characters are cute too. I’m glad they went with Supergirl’s pre-New 52 costume. It’s much better than her current duds.

Supergirl and Lois Lane — voiced by CASTLE stars Molly Quinn & Stana Katic, respectively — take the spotlight in an all-new clip from SUPERMAN: UNBOUND, the next entry in the popular series of DC Universe Animated Original Movies. The film also features the voices of Matt Bomer (“White Collar”) and John Noble (“Fringe,” “The Lord of the Rings” films) as Superman and Brainiac, respectively.

Produced by Warner Premiere, DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Animation, SUPERMAN: UNBOUND arrives May 7, 2013 from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment as a Blu-ray™ Combo Pack, DVD, On Demand and for
Digital Download.

Thor: The Dark World Trailer

Ahead of tomorrow’s release of Iron Man 3 (here in Australia, anyway) comes the first trailer for the Thor sequel, reuniting the cast form the original, and with Doctor Who’s Christopher Eccleston as bad guy Malekith. I like the way the familiar Marvel logo becomes Thor’s cape, but I’m getting tired of seeing London destroyed again, after witnessing its destruction in G.I. Joe Retaliation, and the upcoming Star Trek sequel.

Just as Marvel’s “Thor: The Dark World” continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel’s “Thor” and “Marvels The Avengers,” Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.

Superman’s Birthday And Flashpoint Box Art

It’s Superman’s 75th birthday today! He debuted in Action Comics #1 from DC Comics this week in 1938. There are a few celebratory articles online, but this BBC documentary from 1981, with rare footage of Superman’s creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster is one of the best. I hope there’s some mainstream coverage of the Man of Steel’s milestone too.

Also below are two official breakdowns from two upcoming animated, Superman related projects. The first is a clip from next month’s Superman: Unbound film, which looks to feature much darker and more detailed animation than the last couple of DC toon films, and there’s also the first look at the cool box art from the film adapted from the alternate universe Flashpoint comics storyline.

The clip features Superman’s first encounter with Brainiac, a destructive force who has been devastating planets across the galaxy – with Earth next in his sights. Matt Bomer (“White Collar”) provides the voice of Superman opposite John Noble (“Fringe,” “The Lord of the Rings” films) as the voice of Brainiac. The film also features the voices of “Castle” stars Stana Katic as Lois Lane and Molly Quinn as Supergirl.

Produced by Warner Premiere, DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Animation, SUPERMAN: UNBOUND film arrives May 7, 2013 from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment as a Blu-ray™ Combo Pack, DVD, On Demand and for Digital Download.

JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE FLASHPOINT PARADOX features an amazing cast of its own — from the Grey’s Anatomy duo of Justin Chambers and Kevin McKidd as the voices of Barry Allen/Flash and Thomas Wayne/Batman, respectively, to Michael B. Jordan (Fruitvale, Friday Night Lights, Chronicle) as Cyborg, C. Thomas Howell (Southland, The Outsiders) as Thawne/Professor Zoom, Nathan Fillion (Castle) as Hal Jordan/Green Lantern, Ron Perlman (Hellboy) as Slade and Deathstroke, Dana Delany (Body of Proof) as Lois Lane, Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride) as Aquaman, Danny Huston (Magic City) as General Lane, Sam Daly (The Office, The Daly Show) as Superman, and Kevin Conroy (Batman: The Animated Series) as Batman.
