New Superman/Batman: Apocalypse Clip

Here’s a new clip from DC’s next animated feature and a follow up of sorts to last year’s excellent Superman/Batman: Public Enemies film. Below is the official description and some new pics from the film. The clip doesn’t show much, and none of the titular superheroes, but does reveal its faithfulness to the comics, when Kara (Supergirl) first arrives rather clumsily on Earth.

Based on the DC Comics series/graphic novel “Superman/Batman: Supergirl” by Jeph Loeb, Michael Turner & Peter Steigerwald, Superman/Batman: Apocalypse is produced by animation legend Bruce Timm and directed by Lauren Montgomery (Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths) from a script by Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Tab Murphy (Gorillas in the Mist).

In Superman/Batman: Apocalypse, a spaceship splashes down in Gotham City Harbor — leading Batman and Superman to encounter a mysterious Kryptonian with powers as great as those of the Man of Steel. The Kryptonian is soon revealed to be Kara, cousin of Superman, who takes her under his wing to educate her about the ways of Earth. However, the villainous Darkseid has other plans. Seeing an opportunity to finally defeat Superman, Darkseid abducts and gains control of Kara, utilizing the powerful Kryptonian to do his bidding. It’s up to Batman and Superman to save Kara, but they’ll have to take the fight to Darkseid within his hostile world – where unknown, deadly threats lurk around every corner, including a brainwashed Kryptonian able to match Superman blow-for-blow.

Fan favorites Tim Daly (Private Practice) and Kevin Conroy (China Beach) return to their seminal roles as Superman and Batman, respectively. The celebrity-laden guest cast is headed by Andre Braugher (Men of a Certain Age) as the daunting Darkseid. Sci-Fi heroine Summer Glau (Serenity/Firefly, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) provides the voice of Supergirl, and seven-time Emmy Award winner Ed Asner (Up) reprises his Superman: The Animated Series/Justice League role as Granny Goodness.

Extra Sequential Podcast Episode Six

We get all nostalgic in this week’s podcast when, amongst a bevy of other things, we discuss our fave comics from our past or as my co-host Mladen describes it:

We show each other the comics from our childhood. We also find time to talk about gay men’s interests magazines, Juggernaut’s Butt, and envelopes filled with hair.

Listen to it below, download it here or get it on iTunes.

1:10 – NEWS

A forgotten graphic novel from beat writer William S. Burroughs, a possible new Vertigo TV series, next year’s Comic Con tickets and more.

10:15 – WHAT WE’VE BEEN READING/WATCHING

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo film, disappointing sci-fi flick Pandorum, Oishinbo (a food focused manga), love-Indian style in Viminarama, Blazing Combat classic war tales, the sketchbook story of Joshua Cotter’s Driven by Lemons, documentaries on classic Spider-Man artist and current recluse Steve Ditko and French artist Moebius. We also yak about the luscious looking Thor: For Asgard mini-series, Wolverine’s relaunch, and finally a new paranormal/spy series from Archaia called Lucid.

First Looks at Captain America and Emma Frost on Film

Thanks to the Daily Mail, photos from the Captain America film have surfaced online. These show Chris Evans’ stunt double, with a shield that looks just like the glimpse seen in Iron Man 2. The pics also show the 1940s time period in action, with some interesting and probably, Red Skull-linked henchmen on sleek bikes. The film opens next year. Also just released are the first on set photos of January Jones from TV’s Mad Men as X-Men telepath and future Cyclops lover Emma Frost, from the 1960s set X-Men: First Class film. So, there you go. Two pics from two Marvel comics films set in the past.

Upcoming DC DVDs

Warner Bros. have just released 2 new pics of back cover box art for their upcoming releases. On sale on November 9 is Superman/Shazam!: The Return of Black Adam, which will also feature the first 3 animated shorts, with previously unseen footage.

Also being released on November 9 is a new doco narrated by actor Ryan Reynolds which chronicles the 75 year history of DC Comics. Here’s the back cover of Secret Origin: The Story of DC Comics.

The premiere for the next full length animated feature Superman/Batman: Apocalypse is September 21, but the rest of us can grab it on September 28. Based on the classic comics story arc by Jeph Loeb and Michael Turner which re-introduced Kara Zor-El AKA Supergirl into the current DC universe, the film looks set to be just as awesome. New pics from the film below.

Let Me In Clip

2008’s Swedish, slow-burn film Let The Right One In is an awesomely effective movie. Based on the book by John Ajvide Lindqvist about a young vampire girl’s budding friendship with a child her own age, the movie could’ve easily  forgone the vampire element and still have been a creepy, watchable flick. Having also recently watched The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, and knowing that both films are due for U.S remakes, I’m unsure about how they’ll stack up to the very dark, moody originals.

The remake of Let The Right One In is called Let Me in and is directed by Cloverfield’s Matt Reeves and is also set in a small town. It stars Chloe Moretz (Hit Girl in Kick-Ass) and Kodi Smit-McPhee (the excellent The Road) as well as Richard Jenkins (The Visitor) whose character as Moretz’s vamp caretaker/food supplier is beefed up in the American version. A preview clip has just debuted, and the U.S and French posters are below. It opens on October 1.

127 Hours Trailer

Opening in November is the next film from director Danny Boyle (Sunshine, Slumdog Millionaire). Described by Boyle as, “an action movie with a guy who can’t move,” it’s based on the autobiographical book by Aron Ralston entitled Between a Rock and a Hard Place. The film shows Ralston (played by James Franco) as he’s trapped in a canyon in Utah, forcing him to cut his arm off with a blunt pocket knife.

1:35 NEWS

We yak about the possible closure of famed Japanese anime production company Studio Ghibli and the latest updates for a few Marvel films including Iron Fist and X-Men: First Class. Kevin Bacon, Halle Berry, Vin Diesel and bland rom-coms are also mentioned for some reason.

20:15 WHAT WE’VE BEEN READING/WATCHING

The Darkness: Four Horsemen #1, Gaston Lagaffe, the American Splendor film, Superman/Batman 75th Anniversary issue, cartoon series King of the Hill, action film From Paris With Love, District B13, James Bond new and old, and the Monkey Island 2 Special Edition and Killzone 2 games. As an added bonus the term “lazy doofus” is mentioned twice and the Fantastic Four are compared to a ’70s rock band.

He-Man: Mass Murderer

I so want to see this. Much like Scott Pilgrim is an ode to ’90s video games (and more), The Expendables is a love letter, written in blood, to my favourite ’80s manly action flicks. The most glaring thing about the poster to Stallone’s cinematic testosteronic spectacle is not Arnie’s absence, but the fact that apparently Dolph Lundgren as He-Man in 1987’s Masters of the Universe film killed 41 people. What?! Wow.

Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark Monsters

A couple of good trailers, and hopefully good films, have been released recently.

Gareth Edwards’ film, simply entitled Monsters, seems almost like  a one man band, as Edwards is the writer, director and visual effects artist. Inspired by Jurassic Park, the film follows 2 people as they traverse a quarantined part of Mexico, while the Mexican and U.S armies battle a bunch of creatures. It opens on October 29 in America and in November 12 in the UK.

Guillermo del Toro has carved out quite the niche for himself in the last few years, as director (the 2 Hellboy films), writer (Splice), producer (The Orphanage) or as all 3 (The Devil’s Backbone, Pan’s Labyrinth). His next film, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark stars Katie Holmes and Aussie Guy Pearce. Co-written and produced by del Toro, the film tells of a young girl who discovers monsters in her family’s new house. It opens on January 21 next year. Effectively creepy trailer of the film, which is a remake of a 1973 TV movie, below.

Scott Pilgrim vs The World Movie Review

Man, oh man, what a great film. I’ve been a fan of the great series of graphic novels by creator Bryan Lee O’Malley since I picked up Volume 1 last year. Since 2004 there have been 6 of the enchanting black and white digests, with the final volume, entitled, Scott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour, having just been released.

The books, from publisher Oni Press, centre on slacker Scott Pilgrim, who in his own words remarks,”I don’t need fun to have a good time.” Basically the story is like a manic soap opera that wears its much loved influences boldly on its sleeve. Those influences include pop culture, from comics to video games and classic TV series, and O’Malley manages to weave all that and more in his seemingly rambling, but not really, tale of Scott and his numerous friends as he must defeat the 7 evil exes of the new love of his life, Romana Flowers. Perhaps the trailer can explain it better than I can.

There couldn’t be a better director for the film version than Edgar Wright. The British director has proved his love of pop culture is as evident as O’Malley’s in his TV series Spaced, and showed that he knows how to combine heartfelt drama, comedy and wild action with his first two films, Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.

This was always going to be a hard film to make, not merely because there’s over 1000 pages of source material, but also because it’s not a straight forward tale, with its ever growing cast of characters and a concept that may be hard to grasp for some. As a loyal reader, I can honestly say that the movie exceeded my expectations. Michael Cera (TV’s Arrested Development, Juno) was the only logical choice for the confused, yet dedicated man-boy that is Scott Pilgrim, while Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Die Hard 4) lays on quiet charm and beauty as the object of his affection and relative newcomer Ellen Wong is great as Knives Chau, the immature teenager that Scott is dating at the film’s beginning, and who is also a huge fan of Scott’s average band Sex Bob-Omb.

The evil exes don’t appear for long, as there are seven to get through after all, but thankfully they are played very well and the battles that are sprinkled throughout the film are unique and visually remarkable. Comic book fans have more reason to see this film, as Chris Evans, who has played The Human Torch in Fantastic Four and is currently acting as Captain America in next year’s film shows up as ex-skateboarder/current hammy action star Lucas Lee, while Superman Returns’ Brandon Routh is a mindreading Vegan and Jason Schwatrzman arrives at the climax as mastermind Gideon Graves, the man behind the League of Evil Exes. Thomas Jane (The Punisher) and Clifton Collins Jr. (Star Trek) also show up as Vegan cops.

With its cast of sometimes selfish friends and a world charmingly placed in fantasy land, in which fights resemble something from a frantic video game, it won’t be for everybody, and the first half is more concerned with hilarious jokes and visual gags, while issues of love and maturity are the focus of the second half.

You’ll get more out of it if you’ve read the comics, and don’t mind going with the rich and hypnotic world in which Pilgrim is set. This is not a film for those who like cinema to reflect reality. However, it does have a surprisingly emotional centre (more so than even the comics) and an unashamed sense of child-like, and often childish, fun. Filled with a hectic pace, yet never seeming rushed, it explodes onto the screen like a multicoloured volcano and entices you to pay attention lest you miss a joke. There are plenty of those here, whether it be a running gag about Pilgrim’s haircut or a scene complete with the Seinfeld theme and a laugh track. Yep, charming nonsense has a new name and it is Scott Pilgrim.

Oh, and this is what I’d look like in Scott Pilgrim’s world. See yourself right here.

Extra Sequential Podcast Episode One

On the wonderfully sunny Saturday morning just gone, my mate Mladen and I launched our very first podcast! It’s something we’d been talking about for a while now, and sure, we know there’s quite a few comic book/pop culture podcasts out there already, but hardly any in Australia, and especially in Perth, Western Australia. In fact, I think we are the only one. Most of the American podcasts are superhero centric, but Mladen and I have quite different tastes and rarely agreee on matters of the spandex brigade, so we thought we’d give it a shot. I must say, it went rather well. Both of us have had stints on community radio in the past few years so it was quite an easy experience, but tell us what you think dear listeners/readers!

We’ll be chatting it up weekly, and like the Extra Sequential magazine our aim is to make diehard fanboys and girls, and comic book newbies feel at home, so fear not if you’re not a regular comics reader!

You can listen to it our first episode through the player above or download it right here . It goes for just over 70 minutes and is broken down in to segments, if you want to skip through to the parts that may interest you more. So what did we talk about exactly? Well, here goes…

Lucas Lee Film Posters

It’s good to see these props up close. From the film adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim comic (which opens next week!) comes this little treasure trove; 5 fake posters from the movies of pro skateboarder turned film star Lucas Lee, the 2nd evil ex-boyfriend that Pilgrim must fight. Chris Evans has played The Human Torch and is currently wearing Captain America’s suit for next year’s The First Avenger film, so it’s good to see he still has a sense of humour about being an action man. After having read the excellent, Showgirls, Teen Wolves and Astro Zombies about bad movies, I kinda want to see these made. They look like real straight to DVD films from 1996. You gotta love Evan’s best Zoolander impression and great slogans. Go Action Doctor!

Under the posters (all of which unsurprisingly have the same credits BTW) is a clip showing Pilgrim vs Lee.
