Captain America And Black Panther

Unsurprisingly, with the patriotic Super Soldier getting his film treatment released in July, Marvel is putting  a lot of attention on Steve Rogers. Here’s the latest official news from Marvel, plus a few more tidbits.

Marvel Announces Brubaker & McNiven’s CAPTAIN AMERICA #1

New Ongoing Series Begins In July Featuring Marvel’s First Avenger

Marvel Entertainment is proud to announce Captain America #1, the first issue of an all new ongoing series premiering in July from two of the comic industry’s most acclaimed creators—writer Ed Brubaker (Death of Captain America) and artist Steve McNiven (Civil War)!

Steve Rogers is back as Captain America but when a mysterious figure from his past returns with the Sentinel of Liberty in his crosshairs, deadly secrets will surface—and send shockwaves through the lives of everyone Steve holds dear. An all-new, high octane Captain America series begins here, just in time for the First Avenger’s highly anticipated feature film from Marvel Studios.

“I gave myself a few challenges for this new #1 – I wanted to do the perfect Cap comic for anyone who walks out of the Cap movie and wants to know what’s next, but it also had to build on everything I’ve done on the book beforehand, too, and feel like the natural next step,” explained Brubaker. “Thank God Brevoort wrangled me Steve McNiven to pull all this off. Steve is at the top of his game, and no one draws action like him. I can’t wait for these issues to start coming out.”

McNiven revealed, “Captain America has been a character I’ve wanted to work on in more depth since Civil War, a real icon of the Marvel Universe. Not only do I get to run with Cap, but Ed Brubaker, a guy who has redefined the character at Marvel, is writing the books and he’s come up with an absolutely brilliant storyline that I can’t wait for folks to read.”

Perfect for readers new and old alike, the extra-sized Captain America #1 kicks off the next big chapter in the life of Steve Rogers, courtesy of superstars Ed Brubaker and Steve McNiven!

ON SALE IN JULY

The good Captain also has a few recent one-shots out now, spotlighting his allies and enemies, such as The First Thirteen (what or whoever that is), Crossbones and Batroc The Leaper (who’s a bad guy that …leaps). I picked up only one of these – Captain America and the Secret Avengers. Cap only appears in one panel, despite the title, and as for his Secret Avengers, well, they don’t appear at all. Not the whole team anyway, only Black Widow and new member Sharon Carter. I only grabbed this tale because Greg Tocchini (who created interlocking covers for these Cap one-shots) is the interior artist. Unfortunately it’s not his exotic painted style as seen in last year’s great Last Days of American Crime, but it’s still dynamic. Written by Kelly Sue Deconnick, it has the two lovely ladies infiltrating an evil all girls assassin training school ball and thankfully, it never takes itself too seriously. The art is stylised, but the blank backgrounds are a bit disappointing. It’s fast paced and entertaining enough though, and also includes a short ’80s story from Fabian Nicieza and Rob Liefeld starring Black Widow and Silver Sable chasing a baddie in France.

Black Panther, the African former king from the nation of Wakanda (and husband of X-Men’s Storm) is the new Daredevil. Well, he’s just taking over the protection of Hell’s Kitchen from blind lawyer Matt Murdock after he went crazy evil, but don’t worry, Daredevil returned in Daredevil: Reborn. Novelist David Liss took over when Black Panther did and created a street level tale with new characters, a new costume for the Panther without his Wakandan riches, a new day job at a diner, and most importantly a new villain in super powered mob boss Vlad. I’ve enjoyed this new arc, but with artist Jefte Palo now on board (taking over from Francesco Francavilla, who’s been working on the James Gordon-centred Detective Comics lately), it’s much more impressive. Francavilla is a good artist, certainly, but his creepy visuals work much better in ‘Tec than they did with Black Panther. Palo’s style is less washed out and more rendered and Jean-Francois Beaulieu’s moody colouring adds real grit. With rare but focused action, evil family feuds and a wise cracking guest appearance by Spider-Man, Black Panther #516 works a treat and it’s obvious that things are building to a fateful end.

As a nice combo of Cap and Panther, Marvel will be launching something called American Panther in July, with Black Panther sporting a new Captain America-styled armour. All we have so far is the teaser image below, but it looks like it will tie in to the upcoming Fear Itself event.

Jonathan Hickman’s New Image Series

This is a surprise. I thought the days of writer Jonathan Hickman unveiling a new creation were long gone, since his now busy days writing for Marvel. Hickman made his name as writer and artist with the awesome The Nightly News, which is perfect for comic newbies, graphic designers and anyone who likes to see experimental sequential art. Since then, he’s hardly done much art and has focused on his mad writing skills, particularly for Marvel. Now, he’s back with Image with a brand new concept. Expect this series to sell out quickly, probably before it hits shelves in July.
FUTURE REFLECTIONS

Jonathan Hickman Debuts New Creator-Owned Series at Image in July

No one can ever claim Jonathan Hickman is lazy. Not content with helming head-turning runs on Fantastic Four, Secret Warriors and S.H.I.E.L.D., not to mention re-imagining the FF for his most recent hit, The Future Foundation, Hickman returns to Image this summer with an all-new creator-owned miniseries, THE RED WING.
“We’re all pretty excited for this one,” Hickman explained. “We believe we not only have a solid concept for an engaging new series, but even at this early stage, THE RED WING has that lightning in a bottle feel to it. I think people are really going to like it.”
Written by Hickman, with art by amazing newcomer Nick Pitarra and colors by Rachelle Rosenberg, THE RED WING marks Hickman’s first creator owned work since the conclusion of the critically acclaimed A RED MASS FOR MARS.
“Nick is going to really surprise some people,” Hickman said. “When the art for this starts hitting the web, and then when the finished product shows up in stores, many of them are going to wonder where this guy has been hiding. Nick’s a very hungry, special, special talent. I consider myself fortunate to be working with him.”
Set in a future where the best fighter pilots in the world not only have to master their craft and perfect their skills, the heroes of THE RED WING also have to learn how to navigate through time. Described by Hickman as “the greatest battle in the history of the history of three worlds,” the four-issue miniseries is but the first concept to be mined by Hickman & Pitarra as part of Hickman’s ongoing “PLUS!” project.
“Well, I’ve been promising I’d get to this for over a year, so now it’s time,” Hickman said. “We’ll start with THE RED WING, and then I’ll be writing and drawing something called, FEEL BETTER NOW, before Nick and I move on to our next exciting project. We have a busy, aggressive slate of exciting stories to tell, and, like I said before, it’s time.”
“It’s a real privilege to be working with Jonathan and the incredible team he’s assembled for THE RED WING,” added Image Comics Publisher Eric Stephenson. “Since his comics debut with THE NIGHTLY NEWS, Jonathan has been one of the most unique and visionary voices in contemporary comics, and after hearing what he has planned for THE RED WING and the rest of the PLUS! series, I can guarantee you he’s not planning to rest on his laurels anytime soon!”
THE RED WING #1 (of 4), a 32-page full color comic with a cover price of $3.50, will be available for order now in the May issue of Previews and will go on sale July 6.

Hulk #34 Preview

Good old Hulk has had a lot of related titles and different coloured cast members over the last few years. Here’s the newest story, with an awesome, text-free preview.

Parker & Pagulayan Conquer PLANET RED HULK

This summer, fan favorite writer Jeff Parker and “Planet Hulk” artist Carlos Pagulayan are taking the Marvel Universe’s biggest, reddest bruiser off the map and into the unknown when “Planet Red Hulk” crash lands in Hulk #34 & 35! His country called and Red Hulk answered – until his top secret mission blew up in orbit and his face! Now, Big Red is stranded on an unknown world where only the strong survive…but he’s more than willing to fight his way to the top of the food chain!

Planet Red Hulk takes our hero further along his voyage of understanding that he is his own greatest enemy when Red is sent into a distant alien culture at war,” said writer Jeff Parker. “It seems to have inspired original Planet Hulk artist Carlo Pagulayan to make the most jaw-dropping art I’ve ever seen him do- and he was already incredible!”

“Carlo put an undeniably unique and imaginative stamp on green Hulk and now he’s bringing that magic to this arc of red Hulk,” said Marvel Senior Editor, Mark Paniccia. “He’s one of the best world-builders in the industry.”

But is it cosmic irony that two gamma-irradiated goliaths have now found themselves stranded on alien worlds? Or has a secret force been controlling their paths through the space ways all along? Whatever the answer, it’s a given that Red Hulk isn’t your average castaway. Watch him smash his all way to the top when the one-man conquest of “Planet Red Hulk”begins in Hulk #34 & 35, double-shipping this June!

Herculian Review

This (mostly) awesome one-shot from Savage Dragon creator Erik Larsen came out at the start of March, but I only just got around to reading it. Herculian is slightly bigger than a regular comic (see photo to the left), in a similar size to 27 and Viking and with it’s thicker paper stock, ’70s-styled Marvel cover and slightly browned paper, it’s a throwback to the kinds of comics Larsen, and many others, grew up reading.

A 48 pager with a collection of short, complete stories it is whacky and often, though not always, funny. You can read an interview with Larsen about the genesis of the book here, but essentially it shows a few weird tales without a certain finned hero in sight. The best, and longest, in these pages is Guy Talk. I finished reading it yesterday and immediately gave it to a non-comics reading mate and he absorbed it all and laughed even more than I did at the punchline. A 24 page tale that was Larsen’s contribution to the annual 24 Hour Comic Day (in which you have to complete a comic within 24 hours) it is dark approach to romance. A man meets his grouchy and jaded brother in a diner to tell him of his new lady love. His head over heels status and firm belief in the power of love makes his sibling sick, as he’s been there, done that and has the heartbreak, selfishness and immaturity to prove it. Throughout this raw discussion  (that wouldn’t be out of place in an early Kevin Smith film) there are two silent, unnamed combatants fighting each other in the streets. Neither of the brothers acknowledge this battle, but Larsen creatively uses some of their dialogue to overlap the fight in key moments. It’s a highly entertaining story that whizzes by.

The rest of the tales aren’t as funny or long, but are just as strange. There’s a 6 page black and white  story called Cheeseburger Head that follows a man who wakes up and freaks out upon realising he’s..yep…a cheeseburger head.

Bacon Mummy, Carl Cosmic, Don Drake (who surprises his blind date with his duck face) and others show up here, and most are 1 or 2 page stories. 7 silent one page gags of the motionless Reggie the Veggie show the legless character in a series of similar panels in tales such as High Tide and Snow Day suffering from bad weather, and Mickey Maus adds to the political incorrectness by putting Mickey Mouse in the concentration camps of Art Spiegelman’s classic Maus.

Like all anthologies, some pages work better than others, and in fact some of the punchlines here are just odd rather than funny, but it’s worth buying for the lead feature, Guy Talk. Some stories are new, some have been seen in Image’s Popgun anthologies, but they all have a zany vibe to them.

Larsen’s work, and lettering, here is cruder than his usual charming sketchiness and the colouring is plain, but with the benday dots for tone it really does look like a long lost comic from decades ago.

The Frontiersman #21 Out Now

The latest issue of Broken Frontier’s digital mag is here. Inside is my interview with first time OGN writer Eric Skillman, who has a great blog (and name -Cozy Lummox) right here. The cover of his OGN caught my eye, created by interior artist Jhomar Soriano. It’s a great, Hitchcockian noir drama and is released from Top Shelf next month. Below is the cover in all its glory, and you can catch a preview here.

The Frontiersman #21: Matt Kindt Hits The Big Time

Matt Kindt (Super SpyRevolver) is finally living the dream of creating comics full time. In The Frontiersman #21, the newest issue of Broken Frontier’s bi-weekly digital comics magazine, the writer/artist talks about the road traveled since self-publishing his first story 17 years ago. Kindt also offers an exclusive sneak peek at some of the books he’s got in the works for this year and next.

Also in The Frontiersman #21:

More pistol whipping Q&A action as we sit down with Erik Skillman to discuss Liar’s Kiss, his crime noir graphic novel out next month from Top Shelf. We spotlight Mark Waid’s return to Ruse, the first CrossGen series revived by Marvel. Another comics resurrection gets its due in our history piece on Atlas Comics, brought back by Ardden Entertainment. Our introduction and preview of The Grim Ghost builds a nice bridge between Atlas’ sad past and hopefully brighter present.
Then, there’s a guest feature by Buddy Scalera on the depressing state of comic book education (and what to do about it!), and we present an excerpt of Scalera’s new book,Creating Comics from Start to Finish with tips on comics writing. Last but not least, we break down – almost literally! – the collected edition of Mark Millar and Steve McNiven’s Nemesis and run through the top comics released on March 16.

The Frontiersman #21 is available on Graphicly for $1.49.

Great Batman Covers For June

After moving house on the weekend, and not having the internet at the new place just yet, I am relying on a pre-paid wireless dongle thingy. It’s been somewhat freeing to have no net access for 3 days though, but when you see stuff like this, it makes you thankful for the joys of the web. All pics below are covers from DC’s June releasing Batman related comics and the last one is J.H Williams III’s cover for April’s Batman Inc. #5.

To see all of DC’s June products go here. There’s heaps of goodies coming up in 2 month’s time including 20 Flashpoint tales, consisting of one-shots (like Grodd of War, and Green Arrow Industries) and 3 ish minis (like Lois Lane and the Resistance, and Deadman and the Flying Graysons). The titles alone have me giddy with Elseworlds-like flashbacks.

Total Recall – Now In Comics

Seeing the cover below in the latest Previews catalogue brought back memories from the classic Arnie film in my youth. Great special effects for its day and witty dialogue like, “You’ve got a lot of nerve showing your afce around here.” Plus, Arnie as a woman, with an exploding head and a robot taxi driver. Oh, and an acrobatic Sharon Stone. Classic! Now Dynamite are continuing the film’s story. I guess they didn’t want the rights to the original Philip K. Dick novel, but that makes sense as the film’s probably more well known. I wonder if any of this will be seen in the upcoming remake, starring Colin Farrell.

Text-free preview pages of the debut issue below, which is out in May but can be ordered now.

CONTINUING WHERE THE MOVIE LEFT OFF, TOTAL RECALL #1 HITS STORES THIS MAY!

Shipping this May, Dynamite Comics, inspired by the hit 1990 science fiction movie TOTAL RECALL starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, presents the story of what happens next in its new comic series: TOTAL RECALL.

The series begins with the death of the Mars mining colony chief, Cohaagen, and the creation of an atmosphere for the planet. Douglas Quaid, the undercover agent known as Hauser, and the man responsible for releasing the colony from the grips of Cohaagen, simply wants to live happily ever after with Melina the woman of his dreams.  But with Mars in chaos, new enemies invading the red planet, and a mysterious stranger in their midst, will Quaid have his happily ever after? Check out issue TOTAL RECALL #1 to find out!

“Being given the opportunity to create a sequel to one of the coolest action films of the 1990s was too great pass up,” says first time comics writer Vincent S. Moore.  “Resonating with one of the themes of the original movie, this is a dream come true and a great benefit for me.  In order to fulfill my dream, I simply had to turn around and make the happy ending for Douglas Quaid on Mars into a new nightmare and show him to be the hero once again.  It was easy and tons of fun.  I threw everything I could think at Quaid, keeping with the flavor of the movie.  I hope all of the readers enjoy the ride. My thanks to the folks at Dynamite for giving me this chance.  And to all those fans of the original film, I hope you like what we came up with enough to give it a shot.  Just remember: get your asses to Mars!”

Total Recall is an original Sci-Fi Carolco Pictures thriller, released in 1990.  The film stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sharon Stone and is based on the Philip K. Dick short story “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale.” Directed by Paul Verhoeven and written by Ronald Shusett, Dan O’Bannon, Jon Povill, and Gary Goldman, TOTAL RECALL won a Special Achievement Academy Award for its visual effects. The Jerry Goldsmith soundtrack earned the BMI Film Music Award. The rights to publish a TOTAL RECALL comic book series were obtained from StudioCanal S.A. under a licensing agreement negotiated by The Licensing Group Ltd.

The story line is centered on an unsophisticated construction worker, Douglas Quaid (Schwarzenegger), and the aftermath of his visit to REKALL, a company offering vacations for the mind. The Rekall vacation triggers a mind plant in Quaid’s brain, leading him to discover that he is a freedom fighter from Mars who has been relocated to Earth. Quaid attempts to restore order, and reverse the corrupt influence of commercial powers, despite multiple challenges, not the least of which are his wife’s multiple attempts to kill him, attacks from thugs who want him dead; and his own confusion as to who he really is. Quaid conquers the corrupt hold of the Mars based mining company restoring order to the Mars community.

Undying Love From Image

Image Comics are on quite the winning streak lately, with a bunch of new series gaining favour from readers and critics alike, such as Chew, Skullkickers, Morning Glories and Who Is Jake Ellis?. Maybe this is the latest one, from long time artist and first time writer Tomm Coker, though he did co-write and direct the 2007 horror film Catacombs, which featured singer Pink. Slightly censored press release for Undying Love below.

IS LOVE STRONGER THAN DEATH?

A Man Fights For His Life and His Love in Undying Love

Image Comics is proud to present UNDYING LOVE, an all-new eight-issue miniseries from the creative collaboration of Tomm Coker and Daniel Freedman. Set in an expertly mood-evoking and cinematic Hong Kong, UNDYING LOVE presents a simple concept: hardened American ex-soldier, John Sargent, has fallen in love with a beautiful Chinese woman named Mei. The only thing keeping these star-crossed lovers apart? Mei is a vampire.
Determined to ensure the possibility of a future together, Sargent sets out with Mei on a journey to free her from this curse and make her human once more. Unfortunately, that means destroying the vampire that first made her, and Sargent soon learns Mei was bitten by one of the most powerful vampires in history! Further complicating their desperate situation, their unlikely human/vampire dynamic has piqued the unfathomable interests of other strange beings drawn from Chinese folklore.
“Being able to create a world, populate it with interesting characters and then realize that story through my own art is fantastic,” Coker said of his work on the serires. “It was the most fun I’ve had in years and I think that comes across when you read the book.”

Co-creator Daniel Freedman added, “With UNDYING LOVE, we tried to create something really special, bringing together different elements of the West and the East and letting them run wild in this violent love story. To say things get a little messy would be like asking a bear to eat with a knife and fork.”

UNDYING LOVE is already receiving advance praise from other well-respected creators:

“A work of stunning and staggering beauty, by one of the most talented, consistently awesome artists in comics. Helluva story, great setting and fantastic action to boot!” – John Layman (CHEW)

“Holy s***!!! This book looks f****** great!!!” – Robert Kirkman (INVINCIBLE, THE WALKING DEAD)

“So, you’d think Tomm would be satisfied with being one of the finest artists working in the comics medium, but no, he had to go and team up with Daniel and get me hooked on the writing, as well.  Well, okay, smart guys, where’s the second issue?  Because I want it.  Now!” – JG Jones (WANTED, Marvel Boy)

“I always feel two steps behind Tomm Coker, but UNDYING LOVE reminds me I’m probably further back than just two. With razor sharp line work and atmosphere you can cut with a knife, Tomm and Daniel Freedman have crafted a taught, spellbinding mixed genre tale that has the makings of something truly epic.” — Lee Bermejo (Superman, Hellblazer)

UNDYING LOVE #1 (FEB110389), a 32-page full-color action tale of fantasy, horror and unlikely romance, equal parts vampire mythology and Chinese folklore, will be on sale March 30, 2011 for $2.99.
