Futurama’s Back

Though it hasn’t been officially announced from Fox yet, as far as I know, it appears Matt Groening’s other animated series is due for a Family Guy style comeback, after being axed in 2003. The 4 direct to DVD films have done pretty good business, meaning that the cartoon will hit the TV screens once more. It’s been mentioned at Entertainment Weekly and at Dark Horizons, but basically Comedy Central have ordered 26 more episodes, ie 2 seasons, with the original voice cast and writing team coming back for more sci-fi zaniness. The first new eps should start airing halfway through next year. Good news indeed.

Futurama Returns

G.I. Joe: Resolute

If you want to get a more faithful look at the G.I. Joe franchise before the film hits the big screen, this relatively new anime inspired webisode series is for you. Resolute is an 11 part series, made up of roughly 5 minute animated episodes, written by comics scribe Warren Ellis, with character designers by comics cover artist Dave Johnson and is directed by Joaquim Dos Santos (Justice League Unlimited). The entire movie, comprising of  10 episodes, plus a finale aired on the Adult Swim TV channel in April. It’s violent and fast paced. Below you can see the teaser and the first episode.

The Unclothed Man

Don’t be scared off by that title. Writer/artist Dash Shaw’s breakthrough book was last year’s  Bottomless Belly Button and now he’s teaming up with IFC (the Independent Film Channel) for his latest project. Press release and funky art below.

Five -Episode Series will Premiere Exclusively on IFC.com in Conjunction with Fantagraphics Books Release in November 2009

shawifcteaser1THE UNCLOTHED MAN IN THE 35th CENTURY A.D., by DASH SHAW, will be promoted at the 2009 Book Expo America in New York City, May 29-31, with an appearance by the author on Friday, May 29, at 1:00PM at the Fantagraphics Booth and 4:00PM in the Autographing Area.

IFC.com announced today that it will premiere an original animated web series based on graphic novelist and comic book artist Dash Shaw’s latest book The Unclothed Man in the 35th Century A.D., set for release mid-November, 2009 with the web series following. Shaw’s animation has been widely praised for its eclectic style, innovative design and emotional depth.

Each short episode of this five-part web series chronicles Rebel X-6, a man who works for a well-funded anti-droid organization. The fifth episode will provide behind-the-scenes footage of the making of the series. The premiere on IFC.com marks Dash Shaw’s first animated series and will be based on a story line he has developed for several years.  Seattle’s Fantagraphics Books is set to publish a book by the same name and characters.

“Dash Shaw is a known entity in the comic book realm with a cult following.  We’re excited to bring him, his art and his fans to IFC.com, a platform that recognizes and broadens the reach of up-and-coming, independent content makers,” said Craig Parks, vice president of digital media at IFC. “Shaw’s work on IFC.com will offer a fresh and completely unique take on the animation genre; the type of approach that defines our brand.”
The series features an animated hero, Rebel X-6, and his quest to bring out change in the 35th century A.D.. Rebel X-6 works for an anti-droid organization that opposes the use of droids in all sectors of modern society.  An artist guild that opposes the use of droids in art class hires Rebel X-6. They believe living people should model for life drawings.  Rebel X-6’s assignment is to enter Art School 46 posing as “Model-Droid #343.”  Model droids appear life-like but do not laugh, cry, swear or exhibit other human shortcomings.  His mission is to subvert the school’s ban on drawings of real humans by tricking the students into drawing him.

Superman/Batman Trailer

This may not last long on-line, as it’s currently only available to US residents, but here’s the trailer for the rest of us. Superman/Batman: Public Enemies is the latest Warner Bros. direct to DVD animated film. Based on the first few action packed issues of the series by Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuiness, it seems to follow the story, and art style, quite closely. Plus, there’s guest stars galore. See it below, or here.

90s Storm

90s Wolverine and CyclopsI remember struggling to catch as much of the glorious 1990s X-Men cartoon each day before heading off to school. It was surprisingly faithful to the comics of the time, and often written by comics scribes. Many people came to be aware of Marvel’s merry mutants due to this show. Now you can see them all over again, as well as the new Wolverine and the X-Men animated series, which is my fave thing on TV, along with the fun Batman: The Brave and the Bold. Press release below.

Green Lantern: First Flight Trailer

The 5th film in the direct to DVD animated features from DC is Green Lantern: First Flight. It’s released on July 21 and the trailer is below. The costumes seem to replace the original white with black to great effect, and Sinestro, Kilowog and more are included as characters. Looks great. Official site here.

Fleischer Cartoons

Fleischer Superman DVDThese Superman cartoons still stand up today, despite being produced in the 1940s. Sure, they might be light on story, but they look great. Now, Warner Bros. is releasing a collection of them all. Press release (and video clip) below.

Warner Bros. and DC comics opened the vault to release the very first animated DC Comics Superman cartoons. Commonly known as the Fleischer Superman Cartoons, the series of seventeen animated Technicolor short films will be released on DVD as a 2-disc  collection featuring 17 action-packed vintage theatrical cartoons.

The Max Fleischer Superman title also includes great bonus features including a revealing documentary which defines the tradition of the “Super Human” archetype of hero and why Superman resonates with fans on such a deep and personal level. Also included in the bonus features are interviews with surviving members, relatives and biographers of the animation and production team and contemporary animators such as Bruce Timm (Batman: The Animated Series), Paul Dini and Dan Riba (Superman: The Animated Series) who detail the influence these cartoons have had on their own works.

Saturday Morning Watchmen

Ah, the Watchmen parodies just keep on coming, but this one is right up my alley. My Gen-X, 80s cartoon loving alley. Imagine if the studio who gave the world the cheesy Ninja Turtles toon back in the day got their hands on Alan Moore’s and Dave Gibbons’ seminal work of fiction. Funny, funny stuff, including an amusing theme song, a dancing Nite Owl and Dr. Manhattan changing into a car. You can see the rest of creator Harry Partridge’s videos here.

This time around, it’s not only a new millennium but a new medium, with Marvel exercising its might in the world of stop-motion animation.

Under The Black Freighter’s Hood

Something sorely lacking from the Watchmen film was this little beauty – a story within the story. More specifically, a comic reader as he read an engrossing pirate tale about a desperate man’s search for survival. However, it’s now available as a DVD, On Demand, Blu-Ray and also from iTunes. Besides the animated Tales of the Black Freighter feature, also included is a live action ‘documentary’  looking at the first Nite Owl, in Under The Hood. Trailer below.

Superman/Batman Animated Film

Public Enemies TPBSure, Marvel may be kicking DC’s butt in the battle of the cinema, but DC are winning the animated war. Marvel’s animated films (two Ultimate Avengers, Iron Man, Dr. Strange and Hulk Vs) have been disappointing, but DC’s (Superman/Batman, Justice League: The New Frontier, Wonder Woman) have been awesome. This year, after the recently announced Green Lantern: First Flight, the next release will be Superman/Batman: Public Enemies. This is great news indeed. The film will be based on the action packed first 6 issues of DC’s team-up title, by writer Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuiness. The official synopsis is below. I can’t wait. Go here for a sneak peek at the comic book  inspiration.

Wonder Woman on DVD

Two days before Watchmen hits the cinema, DC’s best loved heroine hits the small screen. Wonder Woman, the new animated film from Warner Bros. and DC Comics, after their excellent Superman/Doomsday and Justice League: The New Frontier animated films, arrives into man’s world on March 3. Keri Russel (MI: 3) stars as WW herself, with Nathan Fillion (Serenity) as pilot Steve Trevor and Virginia Madsen (Firewall) as Hippolyta, WW’s mother. It looks like a faithful set up for the Amazon princess and has some great features, such as a sneak peek at DC’s next animated film, Green Lantern: First Flight. Below is the official trailer and a clip of two Amazonians in some gladiator action.

cont_56

It had a spectacular reaction at WonderCon this week and looks like making new fans when it hits DVD and Blu-Ray on March 3.
