Broken Trinity Deluxe Hard Cover

The Trade collecting Top Cow’s excellent Broken Trinity x-over now also contains all of the associated First Born stories. I must say, I was never a big fan of Witchblade but Top Cow changed my mind with the stories contained within this volume. Press release and Stjepan Sejic’s great cover for the hefty collection, below.

Top Cow Productions, Inc. proudly announced today that they will be expanding the deluxe edition hard cover containing Broken Trinity to include First Born. The limited edition volume will now contain both epic crossover miniseries that forever altered the course of the Top Cow universe. Presented in a new oversize prestige format, the 352 page First Born/Broken Trinity Deluxe Hard Cover collects all three issues of Broken Trinity, the three tie-in issues featuring The Darkness, Angelus, and Witchblade, and Broken Trinity: Aftermath. In addition, the collection will now also include all three issues of First Born as well as the Harvey Award winning tie-in issues of Witchblade #110–112. The hard cover also reprints the previously uncollected First Born: Aftermath, making the entirety of the First Born epic available in a single volume for the first time.

The First Born/Broken Trinity Deluxe Hard Cover reprints the ground-shaking stories from current Witchblade creative team of writer Ron Marz and artist Stjepan Seijic and current The Darkness Phil Hester. The story of First Born explores the conflict between the forces of Light and Dark as New York City Police Office Sara Pezzini prepares to give birth to her first child. Desiring a tip of the power balance in their own favor the forces of Light and Dark covet the offspring of the Witchblade bearer! Broken Trinity acts as a thematic bookend, when a new Angelus bearer rises and two brand-new Artifact bearers make their first appearance in the Top Cow Universe. With new players on the board upsetting a delicate balance, a Trinity will be broken and one bearer will die.

Broken Trinity/First Born TPB Cover

The First Born/Broken Trinity Deluxe Hard Cover is fleshed out with art by industry heavyweights Luke Ross (Captain America), Stephen Sadowski (Avengers/Invaders), Rick Leonardi (Vigilante), Kevin Nowlan (Wednesday Comics), Mike Mayhew (Blackest Night: Tales of the Corps), Lee Moder (Dragon Prince, Red Sonja), Jorge Lucas (The Darkness), Brian Stelfreeze (Wednesday Comics), Nelson Blake II (The Darkness), Tyler Kirkham (Fusion) and Ryan Sook (X-Factor).

Additionally, the oversized 9” x 12” slipcased hard cover will feature an extensive behind-the-scenes section delving deep into the development process, a new wraparound cover by artist Stjepan Sejic, and a 24” x 36” full color poster.

“We were so incredibly pleased with the way that the Midnight Nation Deluxe Hard Cover turned out, and wanted the Broken Trinity edition to be just as impressive,” explained Top Cow Publisher, Filip Sablik, “So we decided to increase the content and page count and give the fans more value without increasing the price. There’s no doubt this is a premium collectible item, but one that really highlights some of the high points in the Top Cow Universe in the last few years. Plus as a fan, I really wanted to see Stjepan Sejic’s beautiful painted work in an over-sized format.”

Orders for the previously solicited First Born Deluxe Hard Cover will be cancelled through Diamond and retailers will have an opportunity to adjust their orders for the new First Born/Broken Trinity Deluxe Hard Cover through Diamond’s FOC program.

Berserker #2 Review

Berserker #2 Cover BThis is without a doubt the bloodiest comic you’ll ever read. If you’ve seen Punisher: War Zone or Midnight Meat Train recently, this will be right up your alley. It’s received a fair amount of press due to it’s blood soaked pages. However, if that’s all this series had to offer it wouldn’t be worth reading.

You can read Berserker #0 for free on Top Cow’s website to give you an idea of what it’s all about,, but here’s the lowdown: Farris Jorn and Aaron Bural are two wild and crazy guys – literally. Jorn ripped the head of his fellow Marine while in Afghanistan, and upon returning home killed his boss. Bural didn’t fare any better, and tore his beloved girlfriend apart with his own hands.

Apart from their superior strength, and frequent need to wash their clothes, the pair have no clue as to why they’re doing this. This second issue is set right after the events of the first. After freaking out his lover Eva at  their workplace, Jorn is knocked unconscious. When he wakes up he sees Clint, the buddy he killed back in Afghanistan. Agent Rowena from Midgard is chasing Jorn in order to recruit him into her mysterious organisation, before their competition Asgard does. Meanwhile Asgard is head hunting Bural, who in turn is receiving his own visions of the dead, namely his girlfriend Courtney.

Bural then gets interrogated before snapping and Jorn does the same after being approached by Rowena. That’s when things get real messy. Or messier.

We don’t know much more than when we did from the last issue, save from the fact that the people chasing down the two berserkers are, “well-funded, private mercs.” The Norse mythology aspect of the story has yet to unravel, and right now the series has as many questions as spilled intestines in its pages. However writer Rick Loverd has obviously crafted something big, and is just choosing to leak out small details every now and then. Hopefully this strategy keep us as curious as the two main characters to know exactly what’s happening to them and why. The men on the run angle of this issue works and the desperation of the pair (though they never meet) is apparent.

Jeremy Haun’s art is just what it needs to be – gory and raw. I imagine he’d need a shower after drawing each issue. Haun is also more than just a man who knows how to depict anatomy from every conceivable angle – inside or out. He also does a brilliant job with the emotional complexities of the characters, from rage to fear to confusion. Dave McCaig’s colours add the necessary pop at all times.

Make no mistake, this is a title for mature readers. At this point it is crying out for more depth. I don’t know how much longer this series can sustain such a bloodbath without building upon the story, but as I said, hints are starting to break through thanks to Loverd’s handy work. I just hope that Berserker becomes known for more than just its use of the colour red.

It’s difficult to choose somewhat restrained preview pages, devoid of blood and guts, so here you go.

Tracker: First Look Review

Tracker: First Look CvrOn sale in October is Tracker: First Look, which is a peek at Top Cow’s new mini-series, Tracker which launches in November. This First Look was previously only available at last month’s Comic-Con. At the Cow panel at the Con it was mentioned that Tracker would be a new look at werewolves, with serial killers thrown in. Now with this special issue we get the full story, or at least the beginning of it.

It opens with Agent Jezebel Kendall (cops never have boring names in fiction, do they?) arriving on the scene of a bus crash. She wonders why a Federal Agent like herself has been called to a traffic accident until she looks inside the bus and discovers not only a mass of mutilated bodies, but also a survivor. The survivor is an agent too, and it appears the reason he alone survived the “Blue Line Massacre,” is more than just luck. Alex O’Roark returns to work nursing a cane and tender ribs and is put on the case of the massacre – the work of a serial killer called Herod. O’Roark knows what he’s doing as he’s the tracker of the title.

There’s only 10 story pages in this preview book, but it’s certainly  a meaty start. Writer Jonathan Lincoln introduces us to not only O’Roark, but his girlfriend, boss and fellow cops, all while creating distinctive voices for them all. There’s no big reveal of Herod or the werewolves that are hinted at, but there’ll be plenty of time for such when the series kicks off proper. Francis Tsai’s art works well, and his colouring deserves to be mentioned. From the red glare of the bus massacre to the bright lights of the police precinct and hospital he makes each scene diverse enough to be interesting, and it’s all entwined with a subtle painterly approach.

Rounding out the extra pages are a few words from the 3 guys behind HVE, or Heroes and Villains Entertainment. In the new tradition of Top Cow aligning themselves with outside story developers, HVE appear to be men after my own heart and mention their love of Star Wars, Street Fighter 2 and Halo. Lincoln also mentions his love of werewolves and ends his text page with a powerful summary of Tracker’s premise – “A good man wakes up with blood on his hands.” Nice.

Also included are 3 pages of character summaries and a neato mini-poster of the cover, which reminds me of Ash from the Evil Dead films. Lastly writer of the excellent series Impaler, William Harms gives a one page intro to his new series, also aided by HVE, called Epoch. At the Cow’s Con panel Epoch was described as a “supernatural Fight Club,” with a bunch of diverse mythological creatures laying the smackdown on each other. Sounds good to me.

Only in the Comic-Con exclusive of Tracker: First Look are 7 pages of The Darkness/Pitt x-over by Paul Jenkins and Dale Keown. All I can say is that it looks very appealing, thanks to Jenkins and Keown, and that book hits shelves on August 26. As for Tracker, it’s off to a good start. I’m intrigued by the concept and O’Roark seems to be a great protagonist. Cops chasing serial killers we’ve all seen before, but not like this. With a new twist on the hairy moon howlers, the lone man who knows how to destroy them and the psycho Herod, who’s described as, “Hannibal Lecter with fangs,” this looks like a story worth following.

Top Cow Panel

Tracker #1The last panel I went to at Comic-Con was the Top Cow one on Saturday. It was a pretty wild affair, with lots to say and not enough time. President Matt Hawkins, Publisher Filip Sablik and founder Marc Silvestri (complete with sunglasses indoors for extra cool) were the main speakers, but there were more people brought on stage than an American Idol episode.

The first big announcement was about the Magdalena movie, which now has a screenwriter in Holly Brix and director in Ryuhei Kitamura. The showreel of the Japanese film maker was presented, consisting of great films such as Versus, Azumi and the recent (and very bloody) Midnight Meat Train. I’ve seen most of his films and teaming up a female writer with a director who knows how to create wild action films with female characters is a great choice. Even Top Cow admitted that the love of this character is surprising, considering she’s only appeared in limited series and x-overs, and never an ongoing series. A teaser poster had the names of Luke Goss (Blade 2, Hellboy 2) and Jenna Dewan (Step Up, The Grudge 2) and like the series, it centres on the Catholic church and its power plays but will also focus on the transfer of power from one Magdalena to another, with someone trying to “hasten the Second Coming of Christ.”

There will also be a new Magdalena ongoing series written by Ron Marz who writes Witchblade for the company, with Ryan Sook as the cover artist. Marz is so impressed by his work that he was willing to wait until Sook was available. No interior artist has been announced yet.

The next film news was about Aphrodite IX, another rarely seen character whose popularity seems to defy logic. Apparently the statue based on the green haired character is their most popular and more news about that film will come next month. Hawkins only hinted that the lead actress is “very hot.”

A sequel to the gory The Darkness game is in the works, since the first one sold over a million units. A film is also in the works for Jackie Estacado and more news will come in 6-8 weeks.

In December arrives a Darkchylde/The Darkness one-shot x-over from Darkchylde creator Randy Queen. You can read more about that in Broken Frontier’s interview with Queen.

The Pilot Season book, Alibi will also get its own film and Common Grounds, described as “Cheers with superheroes and villains,” will receive its own, darker live action TV series.

Busy scribe Marz will write a series called Artifacts which focuses on the 13 artifacts he’s introduced in his Witchblade series, and what happens when you bring all of them together, which is something very bad.

Tracker was then briefly mentioned and it focuses on a look at werewolves in a new way. It’s written by Jonathan Lincoln with art by Francis Tsai. William Harms, writer of the excellent Impaler series is bringing us Epoch, which is like a “supernatural Fight Club,” with a myriad of creatures from mythology battling it out.

Then Heroes actor Milo Ventimiglia and his producing partner Russ Cundiff came on stage (they were both sitting right infront of me) to discuss their gruesome Berserker series that plays with Norse mythology and decapitating rage. Ventimiglia obviously likes what Top Cow are doing and believes they’re the only publisher brave enough to publish the series. The director of the indie film Gabriel, Shane Abbess was pointed out in the audience and fans were encouraged to champion his name as a director behind a Berserker film.

Another Pilot Season series will begin, with Silvestri and writer Robert Kirkman creating all 5 one-shots, the most popular of which will become a series.

Then things started getting even more rapid-fire, but here’s a rundown. There will be a Cyberforce ongoing with art by Kenneth Rocafort and a writer to be announced later. Christos Gage will be writing a series called Sunset, and Silvestri will be working on Midway Earth, Jack the Giant Killer and Warrior. Their deal with Jeff Katz’s (Booster Gold writer) company American Original was also mentioned. Phew. Expect more detailed announcements from the busy Top Cow crew in the coming months.

War Of The Witchblades Conclusion

September’s Witchblade #130 will end the epic War of the Witchblades saga that has exploded from the Top Cow title as of late, and will reveal who exactly will be the new Witchblade, and Angelus, wielders. Top Cow are playing coy and have revealed three alternate covers for the issue, with the identities up for debate. Press release, and covers, below.

Top Cow Productions, Inc. proudly announced today that “War of the Witchblades” will reach its conclusion in Witchblade #130.  Who will emerge as the sole bearer of the Witchblade?  Will it be Sara Pezzini or Dani Baptiste?  Or will it be a completely new bearer?  And who will become the new Angelus?

Witchblade #130 will be the landmark 50th issue of Witchblade written by Ron Marz, The issue is also the 22nd collaborative Witchblade comic with Ron Marz and Sjepan Sejic.  Witchblade #130 is expected in comic book stores on Wednesday, September 9, 2009.

Ron Marz had this to say about the issue:

“The book has very much been a two-character drama since we introduced Dani. We might not have had both characters in every issue, but both characters were definitely a presence in the book. At the end of this storyline, we’ll be back to focusing on one character and that character’s life.”

“There are a lot of different plot threads going on in this arc – Sara, Dani, Sara’s sister Julie, Dani’s friend Finch, the Angelus. And while they might seem like disparate threads now, they’ll all tie together.”

“I will say this: when I kill somebody in one of my books, they stay killed if I have anything to say about it. Death shouldn’t be a revolving door, because it saps the drama out of a story. Sara’s first partner, Jake, took a dirt nap, and it’s gonna stay that way. If somebody is really dead, they’re dead.”

“Somebody ends up with the Witchblade, somebody ends up as the Angelus. But I’m not telling who. That’s why we solicited three different possible versions of the Sejic cover to #130. Obviously we’re only going to press with one of them – but the question is, which one?”

Witchblade #130 will ship with three covers; one by regular artist Sejic revealing the identity of the new Angelus bearer, as well as two covers by classic Witchblade artist Adriana Melo (Ms. Marvel) featuring Sara and Dani respectively. The issue will carry a cover price of $2.99, maintaining Top Cow’s pledge to lock in a $2.99 cover price for all their normal comics in 2009.
