Injustice: Gods Among Us Trailer

Made by NetherRealm is this upcoming fighter game based on the DC Comics characters. Well, some of them, and their New 52 looks too, judging by the armour on display.

The tagline is, “What if our greatest heroes became our greatest threat?” although they don’t use the question mark. Man, that annoys me. I picked up Ghost Recon: Future Soldier and they even spelled destabilising wrong in a cut scene. Anyway, I’m not a huge fan of fighters, apart from a nostalgic haze over Street Fighter II, but this trailer looks cool.

Skyfall Teaser Trailer

Finally, another James Bond film, set to open in October, four years after the last one. I actually just watched Casino Royale, and Quantum of Solace this week, and they’re both good films, although Royale is the better entry. This 23rd Bond film is directed by Sam Mendes (American Beauty) whose last film was the underrated 2009 comedy/drama, Away We Go.

Skyfall stars Daniel Craig, Judi Dench and Ralph Fiennes. Under the rather cool trailer, which features an interesting variation of the familiar theme, is the also just released poster.

Gestalt’s The Deep Wins Aurealis Award

Massive congrats to Gestalt, Tom Taylor and James Brouwer as The Deep: Here Be Dragons won the Aurealis Award for best OGN, and very well deserved, I say. This is the second time running Gestalt have won, and it’s a testament to the grand and diverse work they’re doing. Needless to say, if you haven’t got a copy of The Deep, rectify that pronto! It’s an enchanting all-ages book.

Aurealis Awards announce Australia’s best graphic novel(s) of 2011

Gestalt Publishing’s The Deep: Here Be Dragons declared Australia’s best graphic novel, in a tie with Hidden from Black Pepper Press.

The Deep: Here Be Dragons has been heralded Australia’s best Graphic Novel during the weekend’s Aurealis Awards ceremony held in Sydney, tying with Hidden from Black Pepper Press.

A finalist in both Best Childrens Book (Illustrated) and Graphic Novel categories, Gestalt Publishing’s winning title is written byTom Taylor and illustrated by James Brouwer.

The Aurealis Awards, Australia’s premier awards for genre fiction, are for works of speculative fiction written by an Australian citizen, or permanent resident, and published for the first time between 1 January 2011 and 31 December 2011.

Over 700 entries were received this year, a record number, indicating both the strength of the speculative fiction genre in Australia.

Three of Gestalt’s graphic novels were finalists in the Best Graphic Novel category this year – Torn by Andrew Constant, Nicola Scott and Joh James, The Eldritch Kid: Whisky & Hate by Christian Read and Michael Maier, and The Deep: Here be Dragons by Tom Taylor and James Brouwer.

Last year, Gestalt’s Justin Randall won the Best Graphic Novel category for Changing Ways Book 1.

Tom Taylor is one of only a handful of Australian-based comic book professionals to be regularly working in the enormous US comics market. His Star Wars and superhero comics sell tens of thousands of copies every month in the US but it is his work with Gestalt of which he’s most proud.

His award-winning book, The Deep: Here Be Dragons, illustrated by Brisbane-based artist James Brouwer, tells the adventures of the Nekton family – A multiethnic family of daring Aquanauts who live on a submarine.

“I hope all book stores stock these truly stunning books,” says Taylor. “Gestalt Publishing are doing things I always wanted to see in Australian publishing, They are engaging and championing local talent, and publishing some wonderful stories. However, what’s perhaps the most exciting, is the commitment to quality they are showing.”

“With so many people in the publishing industry looking to cut margins, Gestalt are bucking this trend.  Every book they publish is beautifully produced, it’s one of the reasons I’m so happy The Deep has been published through Gestalt. When I showed these books to editors at San Diego Comic Con last year, they couldn’t believe their eyes. Many commented that they were of a far better quality than anything they could possibly hope to produce and this is a testament to what Wolfgang (Bylsma) and Skye (Ogden) are doing with this company. With so many turning to digital, with a society that is turning more and more to disposable media, these guys are creating something permanent. They are producing books that are so gorgeous, you want to pick them up, hold them, and keep them forever. ”

The Aurealis Awards presentation ceremony was held on the evening of Saturday 12 May 2012 at the Independent Theatre in North Sydney.

Siegfried Trailer

Archaia are known for producing great looking OGNs, and Siegfried from creator Alex Alice, certainly fits that bill. Below is the new trailer for the first book, which has had success in France and has now been translated for us English speakers. In fact we devoted an entire episode of the Extra Sequential podcast to the great Jim Henson books that Archaia have created recently, and so far, Siegfried (which will be released in June) seems to be getting the same kind of deserved buzz.

ARCHAIA ANNOUNCES NORTH AMERICAN PREMIERE OF ANIMATED ‘SIEGFRIED’ TRAILER

Feature-Quality Animation Heralds Release of Alex Alice’s Epic Graphic Novel ‘Siegfried’

Eisner Award-winning publisher Archaia Entertainment is proud to announce the online premiere of the English-language trailer for their upcoming release of Alex Alice’sSIEGFRIED, the first volume in an epic trilogy of graphic novels inspired by the Richard Wagner operatic cycle, “The Ring of the Nibelung.”

Based on the medieval Germanic mythology of the Nibelungenlied, SIEGFRIED tells the story of a child discovered in the woods by a dwarf-goblin who raises the boy in protective secrecy.  As he grows older, however, the boy discovers that he is more than just a lost orphan—he has a destiny planned by Odin, the father of the Norse gods, to fight the dragon Fafnir, guardian of the forbidden Rheingold. This beloved tale of high fantasy and epic heroic discovery is known to have inspired countless well-known classics, including J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings.

To introduce the series to a North American audience, Archaia has released a feature-quality animated trailer created by Pendragon Imageforge and directed by series author and artist Alex Alice. Originally created as a stylistic proof-of-concept for an animated feature film, plans for the full production are set to resume now that Alice has completed the trilogy of graphic novels.

Volume 1 of the SIEGFRIED graphic novel will release in June, with the second and third volumes to follow in 2013.

16:13 THEME-THE RELEVANCE OF SUPERHEROES

We look at how superheroes have changed from their pulp roots and talk about how superheroes are viewed, and the kinds of stories that can be told with the genre.

Grim Leaper from Image

Next month, another Image series with a high concept launches. Grim Leaper is from Kurtis J. Wiebe, the writer of the acclaimed Green Wake, and Peter Panzerfaust. The name, and cover are cool too.
SHADOWLINE TAKES A LEAP
GRIM LEAPER, new series from PETER PANZERFAUST creator in May
At the beginning of the new Image Comics series GRIM LEAPER, Lou Collins has died thirteen times, and he can be sure that grisly death #14 is just around the corner. This may seem like a weird way to find romance, but that’s just what Kurtis J. Wiebe (PETER PANZERFAUST, GREEN WAKE) has in store for Lou in his new series debuting in May, drawn by Aluisio Santos.
Every time he dies, Lou jumps into a stranger’s body, and just as he’s learning something about his new host, another gruesome accident sends him leaping to the next one. Lou wants to escape the violent cycle and find eternal rest — that is, until he meets another “leaper” named Ella.
“This is the gory love story you’ve been waiting for, a buckets of blood romantic comedy for the ages,” said writer Wiebe.
“Grim Leaper is a story about that person you’ve always wanted to date but never had the chance to,” added Santos. “Except now your bad luck is a killer.”
GRIM LEAPER #1 (MAR120418), published under Image Comics Shadowline imprint, will be in stores on May 30. It’s a full-color comic book for $3.50. It is available for pre-order now in the March issue of Previews.

Spike and Willow at Dark Horse Comics

They’ve been publishing the official Buffy adventures for years now, and recently created the Angel and Faith series. Now, Dark Horse Comics are giving blonde vampire Spike (in space?!), and witch Willow a new home. Both series were just announced at the C2E2 convention. Lowdown below, and covers by Jo Chen and David Mack.

Dark Horse Comics announces a brand-new Spike miniseries slated for release this summer!

Written by Victor Gischler (X-Men, Deadpool: Merc with a Mouth) and drawn by Paul Lee (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Devil’s Footprints), Spike promises to be the series all Joss Whedon fans will be talking about.

Spike ventures off world in his bug ship in order to get away from some personal frustration on terra firma, and winds up sucked into a demonic plot to take advantage of the absence of magic on earth.

“What I love about working with Dark Horse on Buffy-related material is that they take great care to capture the feel of the characters and stories from the television show, of which I was a huge fan. Getting my hands on the characters I’ve loved so much over the years is a dream come true,” said Gischler.

Spike #1 will be on sale August 22, 2012!

Willow gets her own miniseries!

Written by Jeff Parker (Thunderbolts, Agents of Atlas) and drawn by Brian Ching (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Witchblade), Willow tells the story of the witch’s obsessive journey to recover her magic.

Willow is on a quest to bring magic back to the world, and she’ll do anything to make it happen, including forming some unhealthy alliances after cracking the code to travel to other dimensions—something thought impossible since the destruction of the Seed.

Willow #1 is on sale November 21, 2012.
