Man of Steel Poster

The second poster for next year’s Superman film starring Henry Cavill is a surprising turn, and certainly not the heroic look we’re used to, but I like it. I assume those handcuffs are Kryptonian, but even if they’re not, Superman is a law abider, so would just play along anyway.

I really hope this film will be awesome.

Star Trek Into Darkness Poster

This is the first official bit of marketing for next year’s Star Trek sequel to the 2009 re-imagining. I hope the official title is Star Trek: Into Darkness though, rather than Star Trek Into Darkness, as that just sounds rather odd.

It’s a cool poster though, as it focuses on the still unknown bad guy, as played by TV’s Sherlock Holmes Benedict Cumberbatch, rather than the heroic Enterprise crew. The familiar symbol as seen in debris is also reminiscent of the recent Dark Knight trilogy posters.

The first teaser for the film is also set to go online sometime this week.

Slaying Giant Warm Bodies

Two interesting trailers have hit the net recently, and both star Nicholas Hoult (About A Boy, and Beast from X-Men: First Class).

Jack the Giant Slayer is directed by Bryan Singer, who’ll also be directing the First Class sequel based on the classic Days of Future past storyline from the comics, and is out in March.

Warm Bodies looks like a much more novel idea and is open in February. Love can even bring zombies to life. I love that idea. It’s directed by Jonathan Levine, the man behind the great 50/50, and the underrated All The Boys Love Mandy Lane.

Iron Man 3 Trailer

Below is the poster and first trailer for next year’s third Iron Man entry starring Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle,  Guy Pearce, and Ben Kingsley as The Mandarin. It’s based on the Extremis storyline from the comics from a few years ago, with the added bonus of the Iron Patriot armour. The trailer certainly looks intense and downbeat, rather than the jovial adventuring of the first two films. It also dwells on the destruction of Stark’s mansion for too long, and Pearce’s Aussie voice doing an American monotone reminds me of Hugo Weaving as Mr Smith in The Matrix films.

Speaking of the Armoured Avenger, last week saw the release of Ultimate Comics Iron Man #1 by writer Nathan Edmondson (Grifter, The Activity) and artist Matteo Bufagni. The Demon in the Armor storyline is a four parter and it’s off to a rousing start.

Hitchcock Trailer

Now this looks surprisingly fun. Hitchcock stars Anthony Hopkins as the greatest director ever (I reckon), and Helen Mirren as his wife Alma, during the making of Psycho. It opens in January.

More Marvel Anime

I’m halfway through watching Marvel’s first foray into anime territory with series devoted to Blade, X-Men, and Wolverine. So far, their Iron Man series is rather good, so I’m looking forward to their latest venture. Official details below.

MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT AND SONY PICTURES ENTERTAINMENT JAPAN ANNOUNCE THE RETURN OF IRON MAN ANIME IN

IRON MAN: RISE OF TECHNOVORE

Marvel Entertainment and Sony Pictures Entertainment Japan (SPEJ) announced today the return of iconic Super Hero, Iron Man, to the beloved world of anime in an all-new feature-length film, IRON MAN: RISE OF TECHNOVORE.  Produced by Madhouse and currently in production in Japan, the film is slated for release on DVD in the spring of 2013.

Directed by Hiroshi Hamasaki (Shigurui, TEXHNOLYZE) with story by Brandon Auman (The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, Iron Man: Armored Adventures), the film explores a confrontation between Iron Man and the villainous Ezekiel Stane, who develops new bio-technology that seemingly outclasses the Iron Man armor.  After Stane unleashes a terrorist attack and sets Tony up to take the fall, Iron Man must evade S.H.I.E.L.D.’s man hunt and find a way to clear his name.

Marvel’s Head of Television, Jeph Loeb to reveal more information surrounding Iron Man: Rise of Technovore at New York Comic Con during the Marvel TV Presents Panel on Saturday, October 13 at 4:15pm in Room 1E13.

“Marvel is excited to present an all-new Iron Man adventure featuring the high-tech adrenaline he is known for, in the beautifully rendered anime style of our friends at Madhouse,” said Producer Megan Thomas Bradner. “We’ll get to see familiar Marvel Super Heroes such as War Machine, Nick Fury, Black Widow, Hawkeye and The Punisher, rendered in anime style for the first time. It’s a can’t miss for any Marvel fan.”

The Avengers Commentary

The American release this week of The Avengers DVD/Blu-Ray means they get something who we in Australia, and other countries who got an earlier release, didn’t get – a Joss Whedon commentary. Thankfully, there’s a rundown of all the tidbits from the director here.

Honest Avengers Trailer

I just discovered Screen Junkies thanks to their rather honest Avengers trailer, but it looks like they’ve given such hilarious treatment to many other films.

Check out their Avengers trailer below. It’s obvious they loved the film, but could see its flaws too.

Resident Evil

Last week I saw Resident Evil: Retribution, the latest film in the franchise, and it was one of the worst films I’ve ever seen. A bunch of characters with no backstories, and a series of fight scenes does not make a good action film. I suggest writer/director Paul W.S. Anderson looks to The Expendables for inspiration because at least those films have great fun and zest with the genre.

Well, this trailer for Resident Evil 6 looks much better than the film. The game is out next week.

The Hobbit Trailer

The second trailer (the first one was way back in December) of Peter Jackson’s first entry in the new prequel Lord of the Rings trilogy has arrived. The Hobbit opens in December, and today is also the 75th anniversary of J.R.R Tolkien’s novel.

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters Trailer

There seems to be quite a few fairytale meets “reality” films these days, although this delayed film starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton as the adventurous siblings seems more like the over the top shenanigans of Van Helsing (remember that 2004 film?) rather than something like Troll Hunter (an awesome Norwegian film).

Hansel and Gretel is out in January.

Batman: Fighting Figures and Fighting the Future

Hot Toys, makers of super detailed action figures have released a 6 minute short film with their Batman toys in action. It’s cool and rather whacky and features Commissioner Gordon, Batman, Joker and Bane. Watch Batman: The Dark Knightfall below and drool over more of their great work here.

Frank Miller’s influential and groundbreaking 1986 mini-series featuring an ageing Batman in a terrifying future Gotham is the next release from Warner Bros. slate of animated films based on DC Comics stories. Below is the official info of The Dark Knight Returns and the cool trailer.

FRANK MILLER’S COMIC MASTERPIECE IS NOW AN ALL-NEW DC UNIVERSE ANIMATED ORIGINAL MOVIE BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS, PART 1 COMING SEPT. 25, 2012 FROM WARNER HOME VIDEO

RoboCop star Peter Weller leads Stellar Voice Cast as Batman
in Animated Blu-rayTM Combo Pack & DVD

Frank Miller’s landmark graphic novel about fear, hope and redemption is celebrated with proper measures of haunting visuals and intense action in Batman: The Dark Knight
Returns, Part 1, the next entry in the popular, ongoing series of DC Universe Animated Original Movies. Produced by Warner Premiere, DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Animation, the all-new, PG-13 rated film arrives September 25, 2012 from Warner Home Video as a Blu-ray™ Combo Pack and DVD, On Demand and for Download. The Blu-ray™ Combo
Pack will include UltraViolet™.

The DC Universe Animated Original Movies have been a fan favorite since debuting in 2007 with Superman Doomsday. Now averaging three releases each year, the DCU animated films are based on classic tales from DC Comics’ revered library or original stories featuring DC’s
fabled characters. Stars of feature film and primetime television populate the stellar voice casts of the DCU animated films. Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 represents the 15th film in the ongoing series.

Fanboy demi-god Peter Weller (RoboCop) leads a stellar voice cast as Bruce Wayne/Batman. Joining Weller behind the microphone is David Selby (The Social Network, Dark Shadows) as Commissioner Gordon, Ariel Winter (Modern Family) as Carrie/Robin, three-time DCU veteran Wade Williams (Prison Break) as Harvey Dent/Two-Face, and Michael McKean
(This is Spinal Tap) as Dr. Bartholomew Wolper.

In the bleak and ominous future of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1, it’s been a decade since Bruce Wayne hung up his cape, following most of the other superheroes who had been forced into retirement.  Facing the downside of middle age, a restless Bruce Wayne
pacifies his frustration with racecars and liquor – but the Bat still beckons as he watches his city fall prey to gangs of barbaric criminals known as The Mutants.

The return of Harvey Dent as Two-Face finally prompts Wayne to once again don the Dark Knight’s cowl, and his dramatic capture of the villain returns him to crime-fighting – simultaneously making him the target of law enforcement and the new hope for a desolate Gotham City. Particularly inspired is a teenage girl named Carrie, who adopts the persona of Robin and ultimately saves Batman from a brutal attack by the Mutant leader.  Armed with a new sidekick, and re-energized with a definitive purpose, the Dark Knight returns to protect Gotham from foes new … and old.

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 is directed by Jay Oliva (Man of Steel, Green Lantern: Emerald Knights) from a screenplay by Bob Goodman (Warehouse 13). Sam Register (Young Justice, Teen Titans, Ben 10) and Bruce Timm (Justice League: Doom) are the executive producers. Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2 will provide the epic story’s
thrilling conclusion with its release in early 2013.

“Frank Miller’s classic re-imagining of Batman has been faithfully recreated under Bruce Timm’s skilled guidance as a masterpiece of storytelling,” said Mary Ellen Thomas, Warner Home Video Vice President, Family & Animation Marketing and Partner Brands. “This
story has been treated with great reverence, including a tour-de-force performance by science fiction legend Peter Weller as the voice of Batman. We know our fans will not only love this film as a stand-alone, but will clamor for the release of the second half next year.”

The Dark Knight Rises Review

“The Dark Knight Rises is certainly an epic film, and enjoyable in parts. It’s that rare film that actually manages, at times, to capture the intense battles and overblown dialogue that superhero comics can do so well, but if it focused on Batman, Bane and Catwoman, there’d be a greater depth at work.”

Catch my full review of the film right here and an excellent analysis of all the plot holes and frustrations here.

If, unlike me, you’re fully into DC’s New 52, then these new #0 issues, and four new series will intrigue you. More info here.

Timed to the one year anniversary of the launch of the historic DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 initiative, DC Comics will introduce 0 month.

In September 2012, DC Comics will release 0 issues—and we don’t mean we aren’t publishing any titles—but what we will be doing is numbering every DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 title #0.

#0s will be stand-alone stories. “Some issues will tell the origins of a character or a team, or in some case where an origin has already been told, they will fill in the blanks in terms of questions readers may have about the New 52 DC Universe,” said Bob Harras, DC Entertainment Editor-in-Chief. “Each of these issues promises to reveal something surprising.”

And debuting at #0 are four new comic book series:

TALON – Co-Writers: Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV. Artist: Guillem March.

Meet Calvin Rose, the only Talon to ever escape the grasp of the Court of Owls. This former assassin of the Court is trying to live a normal life … but that’s impossible when he’s being hunted by his former masters!

SWORD OF SORCERY – Writer: Christy Marx. Artist: Aaron Lopresti.
Featuring the return of Amethyst, Amy Winston leads a strange life on the road with her mother and resents it. She’s about to learn it’s all been necessary when she discovers she’s the lost princess of Gemworld—and she’s being hunted by her murderous aunt. With a back-up story written by Tony Bedard with art by Jesus Saiz, set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, the monstrous warrior Beowulf is charged with finding and defeating the evil Grendel.

THE PHANTOM STRANGER – Writer: Dan DiDio. Artist: Brent Anderson.

Spinning out of his recent appearances in JUSTICE LEAGUE and DC’s Free Comic Book Day story, learn more about the true origin of The Phantom Stranger and his connection to the mysterious Pandora.

TEAM SEVEN – Writer: Justin Jordan. Artist: Jesus Merino.
Set in the early days of DC COMICS-THE NEW 52, threads of the entire DC Universe collide. As Superman emerges, so does the world’s counter measures against him and his kind. Team 7 is comprised of Dinah Lance, Amanda Waller, Steve Trevor, John Lynch, Alex Fairchild, Cole Cash and Slade Wilson — and their story will change everything you know about DC COMICS-THE NEW 52.

The four new series will follow with issue #1s in October and other series will resume their numbering.

Finally, here you can find info on a host of (hopefully awesome) DC films including Justice League, Aquaman and Shazam in the next few years. Here’s a snippet.

This week, the studio revealed it tapped “Gangster Squad” scribe Will Beall to revive “Justice League,” which WB unplugged in 2008, and hired Michael Goldenberg (one of the many writers of “Green Lantern”) to pen “Wonder Woman.”

Those projects now join in development films based on the Flash, Aquaman, Green Arrow, Lobo, the Suicide Squad and Shazam. DC and WB are also facing a decision on how to reboot Batman once “The Dark Knight Rises” completes Christopher Nolan’s take on the caped crusader, featuring Christian Bale in the cowl.
