WAI-CON in Perth

The increasingly popular WAI-CON convention is on again this year in Perth, Western Australia.  It’s held at the Perth Convention Centre on Feb 2-3 (yes, this weekend!) and will feature cosplay, gaming, panels and more. Check out what the annual anime con is all about here.

Also, the Perth library, which has had comics for years, like most libraries around the world has now jsut started offering floppies (as in monthly comics). This is good news. Speaking with one of the staff, she said it’s just a trial basis now, and the monthly issues, which are mainly focused on superhero titles, can only be read in the library. However, if demand increases, they may just loan them out. She also said not too many people know about this service, so take advantage of it, and tell your friends!

Comics Master Class in November

The ASA (Australian Society of Authors) is holding a master class for those interested in creating, or knowing more about, comics. Colleen Doran (Sandman, A Distant Soil) is the guest speaker and it’ll be held in Sydney on November 19 and 20.

In response, the Australian Society of Authors (ASA) has invited world-renowned comics creator Colleen Doran to Australia to run a weekend comics masterclass in November 2011, designed to jump-start the careers of aspiring comics creators and to accelerate the careers of Australian comics professionals. It’s also an ideal opportunity for multi-platform creators, educators and book editors to learn more about the medium and to become proficient in deconstructing comics and graphic novels.

All the details are here.

Comics at Big Screen Convention

My favourite magazine, the film focused Empire is running their Big Screen expo again this year. It’s this weekend and it’s in London. Apart from film stuff, they have a bunch of comic stuff as well, with panels discussing the greatest superhero, and guests like Mike Carey, Mark Millar, Adi Granov and many more.

Go here for the full details.

WAI-CON In Perth

On the 29th and 30th of January is the next annual anime convention to be held at the Perth Convention Centre. You can get your tickets here and they’re also looking for volunteers to help on that weekend. There’s different panels on both days, such as Cosplay, Astro Boy, webcomics, fanfiction, talks by voice actor Spike Spencer and heaps more. There’ll be goodies to buy of course and it’ll just be a great time to get together with other anime lovers.

Supanova 2009

Last year was the first time the Supanova Pop Culture Expo visited the sunny shores of Perth, Western Australia. Apparently we broke Melbourne’s attendance and surprised everyone with how many geeks were hidden in the Perth suburbs.

09-dave-gibbons-feature

This year we can show ’em again. Held once more at the Claremont Showgrounds on July 3-5 there’ll be a few anime voice actors as well as Karl Urban (Star Trek, The Lord of the Rings), Jake Lloyd (Anakin from Episode 1), and Gil Billingham from Twilight. Honestly though, the big one for fanboys will be Dave Gibbons – artist on Watchmen. They’ll also be premiering the Wonder Woman animated feature (a premiere for Oz at least) and the Watchmen Motion Comic, which I’ve seen and is way cooler than you may think. The schedule for the screenings, signings and panels can be found here, which includes the details of the original Battlestar Galactica trio reunion. Of course, there’ll be heaps of vendors too selling DVDs, shirts, toys, games and comics, naturally, including our two main local shops – Comic Zone and Quality Comics, who I’ve been assured will have heaps of tasty specials for sale. If that ain’t enough info for ya, here’s the programme. See you there!
