100 Movies To See In 2014

The surprisingly awesome (so far anyway) Robocop remake, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Godzilla, Amazing Spider-Man 2, a wild interpretation of Noah, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Expendables 3. Whoa. This year will be a good one for films. Yes, as usual lately there’s a ton of remakes and sequels, but also some interesting titles I don’t know much about.

2014 Films

Go here for the list, thanks to excellent film magazine, Empire.

Justice League: War Clip

DC Comics/ Warner Bros. have been making great animated films for the last few years, at the rate of about two a year it seems. These are always accessible to those new to comics, and are always based on some classic and recent tales, and come with entertaining and informative bonus features. Since DC have a hit (Young Justice, Batman: The Brave and the Bold) and miss (quickly cancelled Beware the Batman!) ratio when it comes to their cartoons on TV, these animated films are a much safer bet.

Their next one is called Justice League: War and is based on the first few issues of the 2011 comics tale told by writer Geoff Johns and artist Jim Lee about how the League first met. Below is the first official clip, which seems to follow the comic pretty closely, and a description.

When the powerful Darkseid and his massive, relentless forces invade Earth, a group of previously unaligned super heroes – misunderstood and, in some cases, hunted by the authorities – discover the only way to fend off the attack will be to work together as a cohesive unit. Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, Shazam and, in his origin story, Cyborg combine their respective talents in an all-out battle to save the planet. Based on the 2012 graphic novel, “Justice League: Origin,” by Geoff Johns & Jim Lee, Justice League: War provides a glance into the world before the Justice League was created, and offers the initial animated incarnation of DC Entertainment’s “The New 52.”

“Justice League: War” arrives via Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD and Digitial HD on February 4, 2014from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.

Spider-Man Ascends Godzilla Tomorrow

A few sci-fi film trailers have been released this week. Let’s have a look!

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has many concerned with its multiple villains (Rhino, Green Goblin, Electro – with hints at more), but I’m looking forward to it. Action-y and comedy trailers below.

See Channing Tatum as a metrosexual elf in the new film from the Wachowskis (The Matrix, Speed Racer, Cloud Atlas).

Bryan Cranston, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen star in the remake of Godzilla, directed by Gareth Edwards, who made 2010’s low-budget Monsters, which is definitely worth seeing. Those last two cast members will also appear as siblings Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch in 2015’s Avengers sequel.

Finally, Edge of Tomorrow starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt may look like an Oblivion sequel in the first few seconds of the trailer, but the premise, based on a Japanese novel, All You Need Is Kill. Plus, I like the song.

Son of God Trailer

I have yet to watch the ratings record breaking The Bible mini-series, but have it on DVD and plan to get through the 10 episodes throughout the Christmas break. I’m keen to watch it, as it will surely serve to remind me of the epic tales of the Old Testament especially, and the powerful reaction the upstart called Jesus caused.

It has been so successful actually that the creators are releasing a film, edited from the episodes plus deleted scenes that will focus on Jesus. Called Son of God, it premieres in February, and the trailer can be seen below.

Released a month later is Noah, director Darren Aronofsky’s (The Wrestler, Black Swan) film centred on Noah, with Russell Crowe as the desperate and obedient man. Don’t expect it to be extremely biblically accurate, naturally, but it’s sure to be entertaining.

COLLECTOR’S PARADISE GOES BEYOND BLACK FRIDAY SALE WITH “BUY 2 GET 1 FREE ON ANYTHING IN THE STORE”, COMICS BY THE POUND, AND A TWO WEEK PROGRESSIVE DISCOUNT GRAPHIC NOVEL SALE AT BOTH COLLECTOR’S PARADISE STORES!

Los Angeles area’s Leading Retail Comic Book Store Chain expands the concept of Black Friday Sale into a weeks-long event with unprecedented discounts throughout the stores, and a Graphic Novel Sale that tests your patience for two weeks.

Collector’s Paradise Comics & Gallery, is proud to announce that we will, once again, be bringing Progressive Graphic Novel Sale as part of our Black Friday promotion to Los Angeles area this year.

Last year’s Black Friday two-week event was fantastic.” said owner Edward Greenberg, adding:  ” We learned so much about how to do this, and will use the lessons this year to provide an even better experience for our customers.”

While many stores host Black Friday events, Collector’s Paradise decided that this year they would try out a new approach: Buy 2 Get 1 FREE on Anything in the store, mix and match.  A customer can buy an action figure, a t-shirt and a graphic novel, and the lowest of the three items is FREE.  It’s a “design your own sale Sale”.

Comics by the Pound is another way to make a Sale more fun for the customers.  There will be a huge selection of comic books available in boxes, for customers to look through and pick the ones they would like to buy for just $3 per pound.  Considering an average single comic book is about $4 these days, getting a bunch of them for just $3 is an amazing deal.  Not only that, but every purchase gives you an entry into our raffle where one winner per store will win an amount up to what they have bought for FREE .

The most ambitious part of the Black Friday Sale is something not heard of in the comic book industry, the Progressive Discount Graphic Novel Sale.  On BlackFriday, the stores will have boxes full of graphic novels at 50% off.  Whatever does not sell that day, will be 52% off next day, 54% off the following day, and so on, until 2 weeks later, when it reaches 80% off for whatever is still left over.  Every customer will have to make a decision on whether to wait out for a higher discount or to buy the books before someone else grabs them.  It’s a fun and exciting way to get deals on awesome reads.

Please visit Collector’s Paradise’ official site, ComicsAndCards.net for full details about our Black Friday and Progressive GN Sale events. For additional information, please contact Edward Greenberg, managing partner of Collector’s Paradise @ 818-999-9455 (business) or by email, atstore@comicsandcards.net

Necessary Evil Documentary Now Available

I must admit, my habit of buying many comics mainly from DC in my weekly shop hasn’t existed for sometime. However, I still do get Aquaman, Green Lantern, Injustice and the occasional Batman title, and Trade Paperback collection most weeks. Beyond the comics though, it’s a good time to be introduced to the massive universe of DC Comics, with the entertaining TV show Arrow (which I’m just getting into), the new Batman: Arkham Origins out now, plus the upcoming Man of Steel DVD and Blu-Ray. There’s also the Necessary Evil documentary which focuses on the supervillains of the DCU and has interviews with some great pop culture creators. Below is the official press release, and a clip, and look for Joker’s leering face near you!

“Necessary Evil: Super-Villains of DC Comics,” an all-new documentary produced by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and DC Entertainment, arrives on Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD today — Friday, October 25, 2013 — at a retailer near you.

Below you’ll find a link to an all-new official clip from the film featuring Kevin Conroy, the fan favorite voice of Batman; Zack Snyder, director of “Man of Steel”; and Dr. Andrea Letamendi, renowned geek psychologist; as well as the recognizable voice of ultimate villain Christopher Lee, who provides the narration for the documentary. The topic of the clip is whether or not villains are born bad.”Necessary Evil: Super-Villains of DC Comics” explores the thin line between right and wrong, the nature of evil and how super-villains can reflect society’s dark side as well as our own personal fears.  It also offers keen insight as to the reasons why comic book fans are so fascinated by the very characters they hope to see defeated. Featuring interviews with such luminaries as directors Richard Donner (Superman), Guillermo del Toro (Pacific Rim) and Zack Snyder (Man of Steel), the film focuses on DC Comics’ most terrifying villains, including The Joker, Lex Luthor, Bane, Black Adam, Black Manta, Catwoman, Darkseid, Deathstroke, Doomsday, General Zod, Sinestro, the Suicide Squad, and more.

Superman 74 Years Animation

I could watch this all day! To celebrate 75 years of Superman this year, animation legend Bruce Timm, and Man of Steel director Zack Snyder have teamed up for this excellent, two minute summary of Superman’s storied past, noting the major events and media portrayals over the years. It’s not on YouTube yet, but you can watch it here.

It kicks off with a bang with his first appearance on the cover of Action Comics #1 and ends (of course) lingering on the latest film version, with fights with classic enemies such as Doomsday (who killed him), Braniac and even the fight with Muhammad Ali, and many of the varied artistic styles which have graced Superman in those decades. This short will also be included in next month’s release of the Man of Steel on Blu-Ray.

Who Is Jake Ellis? Film

Talented writer Nathan Edmondson’s Who Is Jake Ellis? mini-series, which he created with artist Tonci Zonjic is becoming a film! That’s exciting news indeed. It was one of my fave comics of recent years, and definitely has big screen potential. Director David Yates is attached, who was behind four of the Harry Potter films.

Edmondson recently wrote the Splinter Cell comic that tied in with the new game, Blacklist, and promises on his blog that the remaining issues of the sequel, Where Is Jake Ellis? will be out soon. He also has two Marvel projects that will be announced at next week’s New York Comic Con.

Free Street Fighter Doco

Capcom and Area 5 have released a 72 minute documentary celebrating classic, and continuing, video game Street Fighter. I Am Street Fighter: 25 Years of Inspiration is free to view below. It’s pretty interesting, with interviews from fans, and creators such as comics writer Jim Zubkavich as well as a look at the passion the game generates, as can be seen in the amazing displays from the players and spectators in pro tournaments.

As the title implies, it’s all about the inspiration, so unfortunately there’s no in-depth analysis of the game’s creation, but it is certainly entertaining anyway.

Man of Steel Blu-Ray and DVD on November 12

The latest Superman reboot, which I reviewed here will be available on Blu-ray and DVD on November 12, with a host of extras. Although the film had some issues, I’m looking forward to watching it again, and even more curious to see the 2015 sequel starring Ben Affleck as Batman. Official press release and images below.

Comic Book Heroes Review

Marvel and DC Comics are the two biggest English language comic book companies in the world, and it is their varied superheroic creations that have dominated cinema screens for the last few years. The comic industry as a whole has benefitted from such exposure, but for every character that is now a household name, there are dozens of small publishers trying for their big break.

Gestalt Comics is one such publisher. Founded in Perth in 2005 by Wolfgang Bylsma and Skye Ogden, the pair have managed to increase their output and get the attention, and praise, they deserve along the way, but it certainly isn’t an easy journey, as Comic Book Heroes, a new documentary reveals.

Conceived by director Nick Dunlop, and airing on Australia’s ABC on August 13 and 20,  it is a fascinating, and sometimes painful examination of the cost of following one’s dreams. Not just the credit card breaking financial cost either. The physical and emotional turmoil that is experienced by the pair, especially, Bylsma is at times harrowing, as frustrations rise and expletives fly.

Bylsma lives in Western Australia, and Ogden in Japan and both men have given Dunlop access to their varied, and harried, lives. It is beautifully shot, making the most of the locations of sunny Perth, sunny San Diego, and crowded Tokyo. The divergence between two guys in the suburbs and those same two guys rubbing shoulders with 125,000 other people at the pop culture perfect storm that is San Diego Comic-Con, means Comic Book Heroes is a delight to witness. For comics readers and those who aren’t, the film is an intriguing, informative and inspiring examination of what it really takes to pursue a specific ambition. There are the highs such as winning awards, and gaining appreciative readers, but there are also lonely times in hotel rooms, distanced from loved ones, the sleep depriving commitment of multi-time zone conversations online and the moments of sheer panic and disappointment that surface when depending on others.

There are moments of humour too, especially with the glimpses of Ogden’s life in Japan, living with his wife and in-laws, but primarily it is a refreshing, raw and honest look at aiming, and achieving, success in the comics industry. It is a world that most people don’t ever witness, and Bylsma and Ogden serve as two likeable, relatable guides, inviting us in to the world of deadlines, travelling and stress. It’s impossible not to witness their unpredictable trials and feel sympathy, and to somehow offer encouragement through the screen, as their resolve and determination faces continual opposition. For anyone who wants to know what it really takes to follow one’s vision, Comic Book Heroes is a must see, as it breaks the barrier between pleasant daydreams and cold, hard reality.

Dunlop followed Gestalt for two years, primarily throughout San Diego Comic-Con in 2011 and 2012, and the majority of the publisher’s talented creators are along for the journey, discussing and promoting the products of their hard work. This crew includes writer Tom Taylor (The Deep) who has also had success, with gigs for Dark Horse and DC Comics, Christian Read (The Eldritch Kid: Whisky and Hate), Emily Smith (Unmasked) and Justin Randall, whose two volumes of Changing Ways have piqued the interest of some of the producers of TV’s The Walking Dead.

Gestalt’s already impressive artwork from their established work looks even more beautiful with subtle motion added, and colouring bleeding to black and white pages. This effect, plus the multiple locations means that Comic Book Heroes is much more than a series of talking heads. Well edited and fast paced, it is a riveting portrait of the maddening dedication, as well as the personal victories and personal sacrifices, of bringing creativity from the suburbs to the international stage.

Second Thor: The Dark World Trailer

It’s not that different from the first actually. Chris Hemsworth returns as the thunder god, Natalie Portman travels to his home and Tom Hiddleston and former Doctor Who Christopher Eccleston are the bad guys (Loki and Malekith respectively).

The Thor sequel opens on October 30, or November 8, depending on where you live.

Gestalt Comics Documentary

The talented team behind Western Australia’s Gestalt Comics have been going from strength to strength in the last few years. They may be a small outfit from Perth, but their ambition knows no bounds and the diversity of their goodies is most impressive. From the upcoming animated series based on The Deep, written by Injustice’s Tom Taylor, to working with noted novelist Kevin J. Anderson, Gestalt are the local (to me, anyway) guys done good.

Documentarian Nick Dunlop has seen the work they’re doing and is bringing their efforts to the small screen in a new documentary entitled Comic Book Heroes, which follows Gestalt founders Wolfgang Bylsma and Skye Ogden over two years, as they travel to the wonderful madness of San Diego Comic-Con, and generally experience the highs and lows of a small comics publisher making it on the international stage.

The doco screens on ABC1 here in Australia on Tuesday the 13th, as well as the 20th, of August at 10pm. Here you can see the tantalising trailer.
