Multiple Supermen by Dennis Culver

Comics Alliance has a great post featuring 19 different evil Supermen (and some women and boys). Yes, there’s some whacky Superman-centric villains from the Man of Steel’s past, but artist Culver makes them all look great. Below are three of my faves – The Negative Superman, Draaga and Saviour.

See the rest here and Culver’s great art blog here. I bet Culver could even make Superman’s new underwear-less, armoured costume look good.

Cool, huh?

X-Futurama

This is definitely worth sharing – a great mash-up of Matt Groening’s Futurama cartoon with a multitude of characters from the X-Men, by Carl Broaddus.

Don’t worry, I can’t name them all either.

Star Wars Can Be Cute

See? If you really want to impress your girlfriend after she squeals, “They’re so adorable!” you’ll name them all. Maybe.

There’s almost 70 inhabitants of George Lucas’ world there, all courtesy of artist Mikey Turvey.

Mark Schulz: Various Drawings Volume 5

The name of the book says it all, but Flesk Publications have just announced their latest art book collecting the great work of artist Mark Schulz. Details below. It’s out in June as does their Al Williamson (Flash Gordon) art book.

Announcing Mark Schultz: Various Drawings Volume Five From Flesk Publications!

Flesk Publications is pleased to announce the fifth volume of Mark Schultz: Various Drawings. This art book features a compendium of illustrations charting the artistic process from conception to final creation. Various Drawings Volume Five will appear in stores in mid-June. See our pre-order special through the Flesk Publications online store at the end of this newsletter.

This new collection showcases a generous selection of private art and commissions, along with a smattering of previously published pieces, all created by Mark Schultz over the past two years. A wealth of sketches, preliminaries, studies and finished art, this new installment will appeal to longtime fans of Mark’s work, as well as those discerning souls who seek only the best examples of modern imaginative illustration to add to their personal collections.

Despite being an acknowledged modern master of pencil and brush and ink, Schultz has never stopped expanding his visual vocabulary, never shied away from experimenting, never slowed in his relentless pursuit of graphic Nirvana. Nor has he forgotten his first loves and obsessions: pulp and noir-fueled dames, otherworldly SF and fantasy pinups, slavering dinosaurs and fearsome women, gleaming spaceships and alluring cosmic femmes.

Over fifty illustrations are featured in this volume—the majority not publicly shown until now. The book is 48 pages with gatefold at 8.5 x 11”. $19.95 softcover, ISBN: 978-1-933865-35-5 and $34.95 hardcover limited signed edition, ISBN: 978-1-933865-36-2 will be available. Pre-order the hardbound edition through the Flesk store for $29.95 through June 1. All pre-orders through Flesk ship by June 1. The hardbound edition is limited to 800 copies. Exclusive to this edition is a bound in plate reproducing an unpublished illustration. Each copy is numbered and signed.

Mark Schultz is an American cartoonist, illustrator and writer. His lifelong interest in the sciences and natural history informs his fictional work, highlighted by the award-winning Xenozoic Tales series and the undersea adventure SubHuman, as well as such non-fiction projects as The Stuff of Life, a Graphic Guide to Genetics and DNA. He is the current writer for the comic strip Prince Valiant.

Rebranding Dark Horse

The Dark Horse blog has a nifty post from art director Lia Ribacchi giving us a peek behind the scenes of the rebranding of Dark Horse, specifically using images of Darth Vader, Conan and Liara from the Mass Effect games and comics. See more of the process at the link above.

Shining The Light For Batman

This is funny. That is all.

New Green Lantern: Emerald Knights Images

The next DC animated film is an anthology centering on six different ring bearers in the Green Lantern Corps and is called Emerald Knights. It is released on June 7, just before the film starring Ryan Reynolds and directed by Martin Campbell and has a great voice cast including Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Castle) as Hal Jordan, Henry Rollins as Kilowog, Jason Isaacs as Sinestro, Arnold Vosloo (the bad guy in The Mummy) as Abin Sur, and former wrestler Rowdy Roddy Piper as Bolphunga. Yep, the Green Lantern names are almost as cool as those in Star Wars.

See more images here and below is a lost of the extras included on the Blu-Ray.

– Featurette:“Only the Bravest: Tales of The Green Lantern Corps”
– Featurette: “Why Green Lantern Matters: The Talent of Geoff Johns”
– Feature Film Commentary with Dan DiDio and Geoff Johns
– Pod: “From Comic Book to Screen: Abin Sur”
– Pod: “From Comic Book to Screen: Laira Omoto“
This short pod will take a peek into Geoff John’s Green Lantern: Secret Origin book, which for the first time, showed fans what really happened to Abin Sur before he crashed landed on Earth, and passed on his ring to Hal Jordan.
– Bruce Timm’s Picks: Excerpt from “The Siege of Starro! Part One” from Batman: The Brave and The Bold, “Revenge of The Reach!” from Batman: The Brave and The Bold

Be Creatively Inspired

And inspired, creatively while you’re at it. Below are two cool pics/slogans I found at Abduzeedo.

Jeffrey Cruz’s ’80s Mash Up

The lively art of Aussie Jeffrey “Chamba” Cruz is eye meltingly good as anyone who’s seen his stuff on Udon’s Street Fighter comics knows. Here is a nifty piece showing all manner of cartoon faves from the 1980s. Ninja Turtles, Danger Mouse, Mighty Mouse, Inspector Gadget and more below.

See more of Cruz’s great work here and here and my interview with him in the first issue of the Extra Sequential magazine here (on page 22).

Project Rooftop Aquaman Winners

I just saw some new Young Justice toys based on the cartoon, and thought how logical it is that Aquaman’s costume would have bare feet, and then I ran across Aquaman costume variations at design site Project Rooftop. Some faves below.

Go here to check them all out and see some updated looks of ’90s toon hero Captain Planet while you’re there too.

Arty Behind the Scenes Stuff

The always entertaining and sometimes inspiring site Abduzeedo has a couple of new posts for budding creators. Here’s a look at a bunch of artists doing their thing, with 17 videos showing paint, graffiti and more being applied on canvas, walls and skin.

Here’s a post showing the workspaces of different artists, with brief explanations. It’s good to see the abundance of Macs.

David Despau

Thanks to a post on Abduzeedo I became aware of this great Spanish artist. I’ve highlighted his work on DC’s Trinity below, which kind of looks like Ivan Reis via David Mack. Find more of David Despau’s work at his blog.

Arrested Development via Peanuts

I just finished watching all 3 awesome seasons of Arrested Development, and I ran across this great pic online that reimagines the cast as characters from Peanuts. See more of artist Bill Mudron’s work here.
